How to create a black soul gem

i played oblivion a lot and i never once encountered a black soul gem. btw how was i supposed to figure out this "place a grand soul gem in the alter and cast soultrap on it"? trial and error...?

@DieTheDeath There were a few books in the game talking about how to make the soul gems, and what the shade of the revenant looked like. At least I think there were. There were also premade black soul gems all over the place, especially in necromancer lairs.

Let's get this straight. A normal soul gem captures any soul except a human soul. A black soul gem captures any human soul, and has the same charge for capturing animal souls as a grand soul gem does. Hope this helps!

@coconutlime96 you can either capture the soul of something you summon via conjuration, or something that attacks you. To capture a soul you need either a soul trap spell/scroll. All you need to do is cast the spell or scroll on the thing you wish to soul trap, and simply kill it. Different creatures have a different level of soul, but human souls are the best. Like this so other people can see it.

@trippolette06 lol you first discover it in the quest with the asshole trying to kill you in the mages guild when youre an assosiate... but if they catch you with a black soul gem in mages guild you get expelled, like if you enter with it in your inventory you have to leave it in your house or something...
