I'm actually a little surprised that What Is Mathematics? by Richard Courant isn't in the recommendations. It's been around a long time, have you ever checked it out?
It's a great book, and covers a lot of material in a rather interesting way. Not an easy read though.
I am a physicist and I believe that string theory is destroying physics and college universities. There are too many people who accept it as gospel without any experimental evidence and they are going down the road Ptolomey went years ago. They are creating shaky mathematical foundations upon which they are losing themselves in.
Last time I checked I thought physics was a experimental science.
hi scientistwriter, i totally agree that physics/science should never be accepted as a gospel, since it would become just another religion. But M-theory is very interesting and shows promise. Maybe we just need to continue to go down this path until experiments can be devised to test some of the theories. Einstein's theories took years to confirm.
Either way i think we are learning a lot just by investigating this theory. We can learn a lot from mistakes.
