  • Who says you have to sit down to use a computer

  • Hmmm, I had a job driving...which required me to sit on my ass for 8-10 hrs a day. Uh oh......

  • people on tv tell us tv is bad 4 us. lol

  • okay so what about the children that sit in school for about 8 hours for 180 each year? the young turks, i dont believe it

  • I'm so fucked, I work on the computer all day and then watch tv and eat and sit on the toilet. fuck. -_-

  • The young Turks suck....I only watched this bc I thought it would b funny....well that changed pretty damn quick....lol :D

  • I spend time laying down in my bed and wathing videos on youtube.... Does that count?

  • during the summer i will sit at the computer for 8+ hours a day... and im skinny, healthy... and I do some sport like activities

  • Unfortunately most people don't have the option of getting up every 15 or 30 minutes to improve circulation. I was taking too making bathroom breaks just so I could get up and stretch my legs a bit. Someone noticed and bitched to my boss. I have high bp so I need to get up and move around every so often. What I now do is simply stand up every so often or move my legs and ankles around while sitting. Not the same as walking but it helps.

  • I study all day and sit for a while. Sucks...

  • TheYoungTurks, I think I got your point.

  • what if i stand and watch it

  • im always moving, like when i watch tv (which i dont do a lot) im always getting up and walking back and forth through the living room or my room and the same with music

the only time i really sit for a long time is when im on the computer writing, reading, or drawing and im always fidgeting i cant keep still xD i spend a lot of time online, but i end up getting up and moving every *estimates* ten minutes

  • LOL yeah chinese people do think that about moving your feet under the table,

  • My little brother who's 16 weighs about 400 pounds doesn't even watch tv. He always fidgets and stuff when sitting down. Yet he's freaking huge. This study is wrong.

  • funny thing about this, I have a brother who is the perfect example of someone who spends excessive amounts of time watching tv and he is very prone to being sick. He is very skinny, but he is like the most unhealthy looking person you will ever see. I try to get his ass to play sport, but he would prefer to lie down and listen to music or watch some more tv.

  • heard this story already :)

  • god i better stop going to school. all that sitting down in class.................... dumbass TYT

  • interesting thing about that, I noticed my health deteriorate as I sat in the 3 hour long classes. I would always fidget and become easily irritated. I always felt that there was something very wrong with sitting down for such long periods. I guess this video serves to be of relevance. So, unless you are working on your college degree, stop going to classes.

  • At the bording school I used to go to in Kenya, we used to excersise like crazy.

They forced you to run 10 laps of the track (4km) every morning, take a shower then go to classes.

Then again the evening at 4pm everyone in the school had to do 5laps (2km) run around the track.

Then it was back to the dorms.

We were the healthiest friggen 12 year olds ever lol. School of 2000 people, and there literally wasn't a single overweight kid

  • thats cool because I fidget a lot anyways. xD

  • what if you have no life and all you do is sitting in front of your computer!!!!!

  • i fidget constantly and im skinny as hell, maybe that should be the new weight loss craze lol

  • i wouldn't worry about this that much. correlation without causation

  • Cenk is a poor, crazy and horny motherfucker

  • @nsduo hahaha

  • So your telling me that they needed a scientific study to tell us that lazy people who sit on their ass all day are less healthy than people who exercise and stay fit... Really? Did we need a study to tell us this? I'm a strong supporter of science but I really think we need to choose where we spend the research dollars a little better.

  • Hooray for fidgeting.

  • New study finds:

Staying alive too long can kill you.

  • Humans weren't made to be sitting in office buildings 8 hours a day. Truth!

  • this guy is a fuckin american asswipe, fucking turkish are all the same anyway...

  • 2:34 fat dudes perverted reaction

  • for god's sake ... are we supposed to be exercising literally every second we are awake??

  • @CheapBeer09 yes

  • yes

  • lol the girl most likely has adhd : P

  • the problem is society encourages being a lazy fatass. if you're at work you have to wear clothes that you can't get sweaty in...if you stand up and pace while thinking at work you look weird...manual modes of transportation to work like bicycling and skateboarding are frowned upon. Society sucks I hate you all.

  • @rsrs17 move to bike capital Portland

  • Ha well as far as bicycling, it is not frowned upon in most parts of Europe thats for sure. And Europeans are over all healthier than Americans...moving plans anyone?

  • poor, horny, crazy, no a little more healthy!

  • i basically sit on my ass all day staring at Ana's tits

    thank you internet!

  • Just do a search for "Workstation Treadmill" Wonder if the health benefits would be worth companies installing them. Just being able to work standing up would likely help.

  • Obvious scientific study is... obvious.

  • Agreed.

  • lol at all the different 'meanings' of fidgeting.. :)

  • Comment removed

  • I'm totally fucking screwed, I've spent the last 5 years sitting watching youtube for 6+ hours a day...

    lol.

  • Me too :(

  • New study.....cost only $3.5 million. It was confirmed that eating too much will make you fat! Cigarettes can lead to all sorts of cancers!!!

Tommorow, a study for $6 million will investigate whether sticking your tongue into a light socket is dangerous.

  • @Rata4You RIGHT

    try this

    new study

Why are people sitting on their ass because their jobs went over sea?

  • I always love the unscientific garbage research TYT gives us.

  • I stand in front of my computer most of the time.

  • well i got to remember to write my will soon i sit on my ass too much

  • people, don't freak out.

    statistics and epidemiology suck ass.

they're just a set of rules agreed upon to either accept or reject the validity of the study on a particular study subject. It is not safe then to assume the results apply to the general population.

    Do cigarettes cause cancer???

maybe, maybe not. It's only been observed that there is a correlation between tobacco consumption and lung cancer. It doesn't mean you WILL get cancer from cigarettes.

  • yeah, those thousands of harmful chemicals in ciggs are nothing to worry about.

    Right?

    LOL

  • read my comment again, it's not that hard.

I know cigarettes contain harmful chemicals.

What I mean is there are people who smoked for 40 years and didn't get cancer, and people who smoke and get cancer within the first 10 years.

Bottomline, it's just a study and applying the results of the study to the general population doesn;t make sense.

  • The girl is very beautiful and charming...

  • looks like i'm dead

  • yeah its a tough desiscion wether to sit and gain weight or go outside run around tear the discs out of my back. Either way you gotta do something and like they said you have no choice

  • Moving your legs or generally twitching and fidgeting usually means you have a fast metabolism, or that you're on a sugar rush perhaps.. hah'

  • well fidgeting while sitting almost screwed me over when i was at a job interview xD

  • This is stupid

If you sit down more than a person who doesn't you are going to use less calories and have more fat and more health issues.

Studies like this don't go deep enough to make claims about just sitting is bad for you.

  • Why I think this study is shit.

I sleep for 8 hours......Whats a little TV or computer time to that?

Perhaps the study advocates Sleeping standing up?

I think the averages and everything they studied is just Random chance.

Example of why the study is shit. I bet those 17000 people, Over a 12 year time, Ate different things, Did different jobs, and have different Family Heath Histories. Also, Do they drink Tap water or bottled water?

Hard to put any credit into this study.

  • True that son I spend a long time on my xbox and pc daily for year yet i weigh 11 stone whice for my build places me as underestimated i got to the gym weekly and im fine no health problems what so ever lol

  • lol, what a coincidence, the first comment i see is yours.

  • xD its true though how are you xD

  • wut if i watch, say, 6 hours of youtube per day...

  • shush, thats out of bounds.

Youtube works the mind, which is a kind of workout, so its ok, lol

    Please say its so...

  • No shit, I was just saying..

  • I HAVE to be sitting right now, I'm recovering from spinal surgery, but I've always been a fidgeter, and I've actually lost scads of weight in the past month even though I've been at my comp all day gaming and w/e, while fidgeting.

  • That so applies to my mom at work. As a computer engineer she has to sit all day. I can tell it makes her really restless when she gets home too.

  • so noone will survive?

  • lol come play survival mode and we will see

  • My Grandpa operated the crusher (sitting) in a mine for 50 years. Sitting 12 hours a day, every day. He in now 89 and healthy as can be.

  • @invisiblebears

    sounds physically laborious, though.

  • It wasn't, I used to hear his other mining buddies giving him shit about this.

  • @invisiblebears ...ya thats why studies deal in averages not totalities. i'm sure you could also find someone who is constantly active and died at the young age of 23

  • This was on Digg a couple days ago. In other news, rain is wet.

  • Your all full of crap! Americans are getting taller and fatter and living longer.Obviously bad habits and natural and unnatural mortality is being trumped by modern medicine and hygiene.Fat people live longer because of modern medical advancements.

  • whats the health risk exactly? if you sit for too long for so many hoursper day you'll get fat?

Im not worried about that at all, but I guess for older people that put on weight quickly should be concerned.

  • @mikeypwn stasis is one of teh causes of thromboembolism even if your not overweight.that is why many people that fly and sit 100% in the flight get up and imediatly suffer a pulmoembolism. being overweight is also a considerable non contagious chronic illness if not managed properly and the assosiated:diabetes, cardiovascularpulmonary disease, hormonal disbalace etc..of couse now there is a difference of being overweight and obeise etc but hey they are just mentioning a very old medical fact

  • Wow, look at yourself. You created a new account just to attack Cenk. "Stenk"-how clever of you. I bet you're laughing at your clever little joke right there, aren't you?

  • And sounds like someone has no life...

  • when i worked with computers loads would have tumors and eye cancer ,back problems and arthritis in there hands by the age of 30 think by 2000 or something was law to take a 10 min brake every hour and 2 hour lunch which was much better i use to just go to the pub but was still stressful so changed my job to an outdoor one but yeah if you just sit in one spot soaking in microwaves your just going to seize up like that old car in your garage and basicly fossilizing yourself alive..dont do it

  • Comment removed

  • Nobody i know has a job where they sit on their asses behind a computer for 8 hours..

  • don't you be bringing Canada in to this just because just because America is a fat ass country

  • @mattmax11 We may be fat, but you're Canadian!

  • @MegaVolcano are you serious i had know idea

p.s thanks for telling something i knew since i was born you retard

  • Wow, 2 thumbs down! People don't know a joke when they see it. And I may be a retard, but at least I'm not Canadian.

  • @MegaVolcano I'm very happy for you cunt

  • Man, you guys need to lighten up and see the humor in the situation.

  • hahaahahaahah

  • its interesting, folks are starting to design work spaces for classrooms (kids) and offices (adults) that incorporate more standing and movement. Get that computer screen up a few feet and its much better for your health!

  • Most of us have jobs where you just sit all day??? Yeah I WISH I had a job like that. Id rather have sitting health problems then back problems...

  • dude, get you some good insoles man, no joke. I stand for 8 hours a day, and my hips, spine, feet, everything would be killing me at the end of the day. After 2 years, I got some 15 dollar insoles... I'm just sayin, if we can take better care of our backs, we'll be much healthier than those with sit-down jobs.

  • @upplsuckimcool16

    prolonged sitting causes back problems...

  • thanks

  • evolution those who dont exercise and dont eat healthy die early whithout passing their genes hopefully .........outside stress like good parenting help with staying healthy........ try it........your genetic line depends on it..........

  • Exactly. Not surprising, Homo sapien evolved the way they did physically because we can outpace literally any other land animal on the planet. We can just keep walking like the mutha-fuckin' Energizer bunny. In fact that's how early Homo sapien hunted food, they'd just keep walking after it, eventually the hunted animals would get tired and we'd slit their throats.

  • youre so right ive seen a video of africans hunting a gazelle and all they did war track it till it dehydrated and just stopped walking its amazing!!!!!you must have seen it as well.....we evolved past the bubonic plague and now in africa theres people being born immune to aids some prostitutes have become immune to aids by takeing the weakened virus duruing oral sex ...their bodies kill the weak virus and thus they are immune just like takeing the flue shot!!!! i wouldnt try it at home

  • @alvaradokids Shouldn't we be encouraging the evolution of humans that don't need to exercise, and have many other changes that allow them to function better in the 21st century? Yes, humans aren't well suited to modern life. Let's start changing that over the next few centuries.

  • @hazelfooot

    same yayy.

  • I don't care how bad it makes my eyes. I can watch Ana giggle all day long.

  • FFFFFFFUUUUU-

  • i have hybernated for the last 4 months but i fidget so that explains why i'm the thinnest person in the world...

  • 4 hours of interupting commercial breaks? Hell yeah its gonna kill me eventually!

But I'll be taking you all with me. Postal style.

    Blame rapmusic and action movies?

No, blame Mr Muscles and Kelloggs Cornflakes.

  • hahah so true! in japan its very bad manners to shake ure leg up and down. its called "bimbou yusuri" which is roughly translated into "poor person shake"..... some people go NUTS (including me) when they see people shake their leg up and down like that haha :D

  • wow..humans need exercise..go figure.

  • yeah we are killing our selfs another study came out that suggests that we lose eye strenght also, by sitting in front the computer, we become near sited b/c we dont look at far away things like we used to before...i hate u computer!

  • yup, first hand experience with that. My work requires me to sit behind the computer sometimes for up to 12 hours a day and i have noticed that my vision has gone very very bad. I can't even read signs that are 15 feet away.

  • I sit too long in front of the computer, howveer, I move a lot just like Ana. I walk 7 kms per day, I do 100 sit ups every night, and when the weather allows it I go out and play soccer. I live in Belgium and it rains every day!

  • Ana is not Armenian culture: Its pretty much everywhere!

  • Comment removed

  • well atleast the fingers are getting a work out '.'

  • Dumbest studies ever. Exercise strength and cardio 3 or more times a week and you will be glad you're sitting down working as you'll be sore and your muscles will be resting.

  • @ChvKiller Yeah these studies are really stupid, anyone with a brain can see through them.

  • add to list of things that kill you

  • Meh, everyting kills poeple nowadays...

  • @Tarik360 True that. Just like everything causes cancer!

  • On a job with good conditions, you can take a short brake every 2-2.5 hours. You can use that for a bit of walking/exersize. Helps a lot.

Question is, people sat WAY less on back in the days where there was less automisation, more handmade stuff, more agriculture etc. Did those people live that much longer? In fact shorter, but ofcourse the healthcare in western countries has improved tremendously the last decades. Would that mean we'd live like 100y+ if we sat less on our ass? Oh well...

  • People who fidget will be healthier because getting regular exercise CAUSES people who sit down to fidget, not the other way around.

And there is some controversy over whether asperin helps prevent blood clotting.

  • There are many reasons people fidget. I have ADHD and fidget so much I get mistaken for an autist (because I rock backwards and forwards and do 'weird things' in an effort to move enough). This happens however much or little good exercise I've been getting, because my brain/body gives me the urge in order to help fix my dopamine imbalance so I can stay more alert and focused, not for any other reason. I am indeed surprisingly thin considering that I'm female and regularly overeat.

  • Ana is exactly right about the fidgeting. I have the same affliction and have for the most part been able to stay at a low weight, even through periods of inactivity and poor diet. As for Cenk's comment, I had a similar response from Japanese friends who said that they thought it would bring bad fortune. I think it's funny that the Chinese, Japanese and Armenian cultures each have their own distinct associations with it, and I'm sure there are more examples.

  • DAMN i've been in this chair for 3 hours!!!! im going for a jog.

  • I guess their is no difference between laying and watching tv, and sitting and watching tv.

  • Well, it's bad to live in a city, it's bad to eat meat, it's bad to sit, it's bad to real while lying, it's bad to overheat, it's bad to over cold, it's bad to.... .. . . . .. We are screwed, one way or another, so dont worry about it.

  • its all about unclumping your blood cells and stress on your cells in general.

  • Ana trying to explain scientific results is painful.

  • Meh, who wants to live past 40 anyway?

    Bed→Chair→Fridge→Chair→Bed FTW

  • I hope my ex is listening to this, fucking fat lazy ass bastard!!!

  • LOL!

  • I think this is bs. =/

  • o.o I have to show my mom this video.

  • Interesting... In my country when you can't sit still while you're at the table people say you have ants and It means you have worms, however it doesn't mean you havethem people just tells you that because by moving you are ruining other pople's conversation.

Anyway moving while sit is not healty at all, I've met tons of ppl that had lack of synovial fluid way faster than average and even osteoarthritis because they never could stay one given joint of their legs still while sitting.

  • Haha, Ana, that's not why.. it has to do with noradrenaline/methylation.

  • I am so innately calm and honestly couldn't force myself to fidget.I also can't stand people who fidget.I feel like slapping them;it's so annoying.I work out 70-90 minutes a day, five days a week so if that's not enough, screw it.Seriously,I'm sick to death of a new study coming out every month claiming that we need to spend more time moving.I work like a horse in the gym and the rest of the day I want to take it fairly easy physically.I'm not going to force myself to shake like a crackhead.

  • @bkelsey4 I second that

  • Calm down

  • Screw it. Just pretend you never saw this video or heard any of this information (If it is reliable...).

  • In the Chinese culture, it doesn't mean you're poor. It's just that a lot of uneducated rascals "bounce" their leg when they sit where educated folk are more likely to have better posture.

  • Inactivity is related to obesity and heart disease?!

  • My mom should see this so she won't call me crazy when I stand up while playing video games from time to time.

  • In Mexican culture, fidgeting means that your pissing your wife off and she won't leave you alone about it...

  • Wow very interesting study. Its pretty shocking

  • who cares we all die someday

  • The problem is that most of us don't have a choice. even that i exercise one hour everyday and eat only a healthy food to maintain my health & shape, but this new study made me kinda concern because I'm guilty for sitting 10 hours daily working in my laptop. Sometimes i remember that i stayed too long without moving, so i get up and stretch for 2 minutes, but also sometimes i don't remember to do that at all. I can't fidgeting while i'm working because it make me unconcentrate & nervous.

  • I need to find a job that has me outside and about, but I don't know what kind of job I could get without getting hippy jobs.

  • WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!

  • im not... im immortal

  • If you're immortal could you get me a packet of smokes next time you go to the shops.

  • sure! i'll get them to you telepathically. they will float into your house.

  • Haha Ana's breasts jiggle when she moved her legs!

Moar fidgeting on teh show pls!!!1

  • this sounds like total BS

  • I work with computers all day. but I've set up my desk so I can stand all day long. At first some of my co-workers thought I was strange. but my back always bothered me at the end of the day when I was sitting. Now I feel great. And after seeing this I feel even better.

  • I got an idea that is both green and would help this issue. Peddle generators, make all people sitting at desks peddle while they are at their desks and then they can help the power grid and give them some much needed exercise.

  • OMG that is the scariest idea I think iv ever heard

  • that is a good idea.

  • So whats the death rate of people sitting on their ass making studies about people dying?

  • I move my both of my legs and an arm when I sit because I am horny, crazy, and poor!

I'm NOT getting rid of my recliner, so please don't let my GF see this clip!

So all those times my teacher yelled at me to sit still, I should have been telling her to f*ck off, cause I don't want to die?

When they make a computer that I can operate just as well standing, I'll me OK.

  • They needed a study for this?

  • Always good to do fact checks.

  • @HappyandCheery

I guess so, but I mean seriously... The researchers' message was: moving is good, stagnation is bad. Is there anyone here who didn't already know that?

  • 4 hours of television is bad? Hmm... what about video games/computer? If so... I'm fucked.

  • WOOO! Let's hear it for restless leg syndrome!

  • @Capng123 haha yea!!! i have that but at least it doesnt keep me up at night

  • Standing desks help out alot.

  • What's a " baby ass-burn"?

  • I think Cenk said, "Baby aspirin." I have no clue what that is, though.

  • Aspirin meant for babies i think, google it, something about them being good for your heart
