  • ...why was there only a short clip of a E2 being pulled away? They should never have scrapped the E2s... Thomas is what shows the true pride in them...

  • BRILLIANT UPLOAD !!!!

  • Fab footage of a vanished world. Did I spot the Night Ferry in this clip ?

    More please..

  • I'm trying to look for Brighton E2 0-6-0 115 (or better known as the steam locomotive that inspired the world famous Thomas the Tank Engine) does anyone know were to find a clip of that said locomotive? I already tried google.

  • Whoever ordered the E2s scrapped should have been canned

  • Great set of really interesting views. I'd love to have a model class W, my Dublo 264 tank is really good with freight and it would be nice to replicate these Southern cross London Freights.

  • Thanks for the video. Wandsworth/Clapham Junction were my old stomping grounds. Most interesting to know the reason for double heading the Night Ferry. I often saw that train pass and wondered why the need for double heading as a Bulleid Pacific could have easily handled that train. The class W Tanks were always one of my favourites.

  • Love that shot of the Brittania on the Golden Arrow. Great video.

  • great to see an LBSCR E2 appearing in this film if only one was preserved

  • I wish I could have lived in the 50s, I always hear good things about it.

(Well the late 50s at least because rationing was over and times had improved a little bit)

Guessing this is 1958 or 59?

    Great vid

  • @Doomsday2060 You only wish it because you weren't there. It was horrible. Filthy air, every train journey ended with grit in the eyes. Shirt collars were black before you got to work (or school). Cars did 55mph max and 20mpg and had wooden floorboards and leather seats but killed you in the slightest crash. Buses had "No spitting" signs and you had to queue at the cheese counter and then again at the bacon counter and again for butter and bread. (continued)

  • @vmgrd34

I totally see what you mean. Wise comment.

My uncle was the floor manager in a foundry in the 50s - He says he is the only one still alive today because he chain smoked so many cigarettes that they filtered out the fumes from the foundry...

But I agree that the air must have been filthy in them days and the cars of course weren't built for crashes...

But I didn't know that buses had "No spitting" signs.

    Thanks for that little insight!

  • @vmgrd34 Well said! I can remember the 1950's and i can't see why people think that period was so wonderful. I do remember queues in the shops and rationing. Everyone was routinely rude to shop assistants, bus conductors, railway staff; in fact poor service was expected and received. Even in those days the papers and media were full of news about 'The Crime Wave'. And the radio and telly were awful too!

  • At 0:46, is that a Fowler 2-6-2 condensing tank with the 6 wheel LMS van? Also, double helping of W class doing exactly what they were for, lovely. Very cool, great vid.

  • @spiccybaby Yes, undoubtedly - would have worked through over the Met and Snow Hill Tunnel. Wasn't sure it was a 6-wheeled 'STOVE R' van. Love those things, my old Dad has built a beautiful 4mm model of one from a Phoenix brass kit as homage to the old Hornby Dublo one he had as a kid!

  • love the e2 tank engines appearance in this

  • I only wished the listing could have lasted 5 hours and twenty minutes.. it was lovely to see that the electrics had been filmed as well.. sadly missed out when I was a kid but then I was having to buy my own super8 film from my pocket money. and it was worthy of another 5* to..

  • so all the coal used in locos most often had to be picked out using hand held picks ... now that´s extra-ordinary

  • Hugely enjoyable as always; seeing the 2-6-4T on the freight seems like a good justification for my Dublo Standard 4 doing more freight (which it does very well). Interesting too to see the Britannia class on the Golden Arrow, a job for my Trix Brit!

  • I forgot that orignally Wandsworth Road had two platforms...5*

  • old memories that will never fade
