Travelers also have their fair share of problems while traveling there. I know this because it is a fact that isn't hard to find. The Johannesburg CBD is still a very interesting place, and the Hillbrow Police has stated that their town is too small for crime, ie crime can be controlled with more effort.

Atlanta is a nice city, but to say it is one of the most beautiful or one of America's greatest cities is quite an overstatement. Chicago on the other hand is a great city, and that is why more than 9 million people decide to live in Chicagoland. I personally live in Chicagoland in Winnetka, IL. I can see comparing Little Haiti to Johannesburg, but you have to understand that almost all of Johannesburg save some wealthy areas is a mess.

I spent a week there and had a great time. Don't scare people off with nonsense since with basic precautions the city should be fine. Enjoy the Apartheid Museum, Newtown, Melville (great for the evening(, the now-improving CBD and Constitution Hill (only during the day, Braamfontein and also head up to the bland suburbs of Sandton or Houghton to see the glitzy part. Soweto, of course, is also really interesting. Jo'Burg is a great city.

Thats between 1.8 to 2.5 million rand, you can still get a massive house anywhere for that price. I'm from the south of JHB, Mondeor, Meredale, Glenvista, Glenanda, Ridgeway are all decent areas.
In the North places like Rosebank, Parktown, Parkurst, Sandton, Houghton and further North places like Midrand or Randburg are full of good newly built properties
Public transit sucks in many SA cities so some township guys got the idea to transport people using vans(called taxis)) It is a huge business now. Joburg has now put the first leg on an express busway with stations throughout the city. High marks so far.
Very brave to film that through joburg.. I was expecting to see one of those taxi drivers (mini busses) stopping at the stop street and taking the nicking camera! Sends shivers down my spine this footage.

I disagree. sure Cape Town is incredibly beautiful but Johannesburg makes up its lack of evident landmarks and beauty with a vibrant atmosphere. The CBD during the days feels 100 times more African than Cape Town and suburbs like Melville are also a great venue for an evening fun. Not to mention it's great to visit solely due to its pivotal role in the recent history of South Africa and much more racially integrated than CT in my opinion. Very different, but both CT and Jo'Burg are great.
Since first seeing this vid I have returned to Joburg, visited Alex, been out on night shift patrol with SAPS... the old SA I knew so well from the days of my youth is gone. Still a hell of a buzz going on though. One of a kind, nowhere else quite like it. @mautwana It is a fact that Johannesburg is dangerous, it has statistically been in the top 5 cities for murders, robberies, and rapes for the past decade. Travelers also have their fair share of problems while traveling there. I know this because it is a fact that isn't hard to find. As for the ugly part, that is just an opinion but I guess I'm just used to beautiful infrastructure. You don't have to go there to know this general knowledge about the city.

@mautwana actually wrong. New York is one of the safest cities in the world, crime rate has plummeted amazingly. Small towns in Texas have more crime than New York. Johannesburg looks dirty and looks like a city that has easy places to rob. and don't be jealous of those other cities you listed they're all better than the shithole in South Africa.

The Johannesburg CBD is still a very interesting place, and the Hillbrow Police has stated that their town is too small for crime, ie crime can be controlled with more effort.

I live in Anchorage-AK, and i've been in JHB it's a very huge,modern, and clean place..of course there're some criminals but not like NYC or Chica or even LA, it's really beautiful and exciting city but very hot..

Atlanta is a nice city, but to say it is one of the most beautiful or one of America's greatest cities is quite an overstatement. Chicago on the other hand is a great city, and that is why more than 9 million people decide to live in Chicagoland. I personally live in Chicagoland in Winnetka, IL. I can see comparing Little Haiti to Johannesburg, but you have to understand that almost all of Johannesburg save some wealthy areas is a mess.

im sorry but i was born in johannesburg and lived there half my life and i absolutely love the country but johnrhysmusician is right, the streets are dirty, there's rubbish everywhere, there are gangs and robbers but that doesn't mean your going to be shot when you walk around the streets in the middle of the day. It is a beautiful place but it is not a clean city and i was born and raised around dark africans, im not a racist.

my house got robbed 7 times befor we moved and 3 of my neighbors houses got robbed and they were killed and the same thing with my uncles farm 2 nights ago it got broken into but 20-30 people and they attacked my uncle and aunt with hammers and knives this was all in or near joburg. the only reason i dont think anything happened to you was because no one there wanted police around there

I spent a week there and had a great time. Don't scare people off with nonsense since with basic precautions the city should be fine. Enjoy the Apartheid Museum, Newtown, Melville (great for the evening(, the now-improving CBD and Constitution Hill (only during the day, Braamfontein and also head up to the bland suburbs of Sandton or Houghton to see the glitzy part. Soweto, of course, is also really interesting. Jo'Burg is a great city.

i have lived there from when i was born untill i was 7 (im 16 now) and in the 7 years of being there i never seen anything bad (exept a car jacking and a gun war between police and 3 other guys) i would say that Los Angeles is more dangerous and have you ever even been to Jo'Burg

Roughly between 5-25 million Rand, Those big houses in Houghton are some of the oldest houses in JHB, they are considered ' old money' whereas Sandton is considered 'new money'

Thats between 1.8 to 2.5 million rand, you can still get a massive house anywhere for that price. I'm from the south of JHB, Mondeor, Meredale, Glenvista, Glenanda, Ridgeway are all decent areas.
In the North places like Rosebank, Parktown, Parkurst, Sandton, Houghton and further North places like Midrand or Randburg are full of good newly built properties

Public transit sucks in many SA cities so some township guys got the idea to transport people using vans(called taxis)) It is a huge business now. Joburg has now put the first leg on an express busway with stations throughout the city. High marks so far.

I disagree. sure Cape Town is incredibly beautiful but Johannesburg makes up its lack of evident landmarks and beauty with a vibrant atmosphere. The CBD during the days feels 100 times more African than Cape Town and suburbs like Melville are also a great venue for an evening fun. Not to mention it's great to visit solely due to its pivotal role in the recent history of South Africa and much more racially integrated than CT in my opinion. Very different, but both CT and Jo'Burg are great.

Since first seeing this vid I have returned to Joburg, visited Alex, been out on night shift patrol with SAPS... the old SA I knew so well from the days of my youth is gone. Still a hell of a buzz going on though. One of a kind, nowhere else quite like it.
