When you run with the Speed Booster for awhile, Samus leaves after images. If you immediately crouch during this, Samus will flash. Press the jump button and she'll rocket into the air. That's a shinespark. It's also possible to do this horizontally and diagonally if you know how.

If I'm correct, Zero Mission first introduced the Zero Suit, which of course, stuck after the game. The Fusion stuck after Metroid Fusion into Metroid Prime 1, by the whole Game cube GBA linkup, IDC bout that much, and the Wii formated version, Metroid Prime Trilogy.
