I saw The Orb live in 1994, at the Kentish Town Forum. I was only 14 / 15 at the time, and have no idea how I managed to get in, but it was fucking brilliant.
@SimonGrowl I remember, my friend and I hid joints we had made from stealing weed from his older brothers' stash in the gap between our skinny teenage ankles and Achilles tendons, down our socks. This was before I had experienced Ecstasy, but as the night grew on, it became clear that everyone was on pills. Me and my mate just had our couple of joints, and when we started smoking them, a few people came up to us and asked for a drag.
@SimonGrowl Instead of running off with them, or being all geezer-ish, which was the behaviour we were used to, they were really sound, and just gave them back to us after a few drags, spoke to us nicely for a bit, and went on their way. Wow. I loved it.
I said once that for me there are three ambient albums above everything else ever recorded - 'Substrata' by Biosphere, 'Lifeforms' by Future Sound of London and 'Orbus Terrarum' by The Orb and I still think that. I am a great ambient/electronic music lover and there are hundreds, thousands maybe of fantastic ambient releases which I love and admire but those three albums just stand on the very top level of all time, like completely another dimension of music and each has its own
@subradial Yeah, I agree! I just re-got Substrata the other day, and have been drooling to it since. Together with this and also Lifeforms (which was part of the deepest mushroom trip I have ever had, +4 on the Shulgin scale if that mean anything to you.). But I think I would also need to add: Mantaray - Numinous Island to the list. My God these 4 albums have taken me through the best and worst times in my life with smoothness and elegance, and gotten me closer to becoming friends with death.
aw nostalgia :,)
