Max was awesome! I saw him with his quartet including Cecil Bridgewater, Odean Pope, and Tyron Brown - an excellent show. And then, for the second encore, Max came out alone and did a hi-hat thing like this, but he did it for maybe 10 minutes, and it never got boring!
I love all these new rock/metal drummers you see with their shirts off and stuff, and then you see guys like Roach and Buddy Rich wearing suits and stuff and still out-playing them a lot of the time.
@demonbomb102 what the drummer is wearing makes no difference. they just come from a different time. yes these drummers like max roach are fantastic but theyre not made more impressive coz theyve got a tie on!
some of you are still in the comparison trap. why compare genius to genius? be glad that there is genius out there and just enjoy/learn. it's very weird that in an artform like music especially people are always trying to fight out the useless battle of who is better. That is totally not the point. for most it is probably a way to counteract perceived intimidation. Music can such strong effect that somehow one can be offended by it intimidated by it.

You've ironically hit the nail on the head- and exemplify the very problem that's at the heart with those on Buddy's 'bandwagon'- they think one-handed showoff stuff is the greatest art of all. Buddy was faster- no doubt. But, once and forever- that is not the point. It's the imaginative and interesting colors of the drummer's vocabulary that Max excelled at. Max was much more deeply creative. Buddy was perhaps the better drummer- but Max was very much more the artist.
For his next trick, Max will solo on a car battery, with pencils, and still only be scraping the surface of his genius. I miss Max!

Max was awesome! I saw him with his quartet including Cecil Bridgewater, Odean Pope, and Tyron Brown - an excellent show. And then, for the second encore, Max came out alone and did a hi-hat thing like this, but he did it for maybe 10 minutes, and it never got boring!

some of you are still in the comparison trap. why compare genius to genius? be glad that there is genius out there and just enjoy/learn. it's very weird that in an artform like music especially people are always trying to fight out the useless battle of who is better. That is totally not the point. for most it is probably a way to counteract perceived intimidation. Music can such strong effect that somehow one can be offended by it intimidated by it.

You've ironically hit the nail on the head- and exemplify the very problem that's at the heart with those on Buddy's 'bandwagon'- they think one-handed showoff stuff is the greatest art of all. Buddy was faster- no doubt. But, once and forever- that is not the point. It's the imaginative and interesting colors of the drummer's vocabulary that Max excelled at. Max was much more deeply creative. Buddy was perhaps the better drummer- but Max was very much more the artist.
