It's similar to square dancing but done in long lines of couples. You get to dance with every other couple in the line, not just the three other couples in your square. There is also usually a walk-through before the dance and the caller can stop calling after a few cycles. We do sometimes do square dances. For example see my video "New Year's Eve Contra Square Dance"
It's neat to be from out-of-state (Indiana) and see folk you contra danced with whilst in Concord. Lissa Something-burger was performing the nite I was there...She performed a month prior in Bloomington, Indiana. I really enjoyed the Larry and Eden duo in the midwest as well...
Any video is better than no video! Its funny I was just there last night, and some of the people on the video were there too! It was my first time contra dancing...it was a blast. I didn't know anyone, and they are happy to show you how. Buzz-cut spin...is that at 3:12 min mark? Why do some men wear skirts?
The spin at 3:12 is Keily and Jill doing some kind of gender-neutural spin. The usual spin is the same as for ballroom dancing. Some guys wear skirts because they like how they spin and twirl. My girlfriend, Robin, and I usually dance every Monday and Thursday but we skipped last night because we needed to get up early today. Hope to meet you soon. We'll probably skip next Thursday because we're heading to Dance Flurry in New York State next weekend.
This is the first contra video I've found on here where the dancer actually know a buzz-cut spin. The video quality is pretty bad, though. Next time put the camera a little futher and a little higher than it was. Thanks!
The video was taken with a $30 CVS "one time use" camcorder (hacked to be re-usable). I just put it on a convenient windowsill. I'll do better next time.
The problem with taking pictures of contra dancing is that you have to miss the dance or risk cutting the dancers heads off. The wonder is that there are any pictures at all. Its hard not to dance.
Ah Hell..it's called square dancin

No prob - thanks for taking it! I was beginning to wonder if Portland dancers do contra differently from the rest of the world. :)
