For The Jaguar Version,Ubisoft Really push the system to it's limit to get the graphics and animations very simlar to the PS1/Saturn Version! O.o I asume that it would have been missing some animations and whatnot due to the Cartridge Format and Memory,But as soon as I saw this version,Boy was I wrong!!
Wow that is awesome, I grew up thinking this was first released on the Saturn, ha I always loved the Saturn version. Very funny hearing the midi sounds for music. To me what I loved so much about this game beyond how it looked was the music and sound effects. At the time, CD quality music was still ground breaking. I like hearing the differences.
Just snagged this for $64. Complete with original packaging and manual. Just because I love Rayman so much. Thought it would be interesting to own it on the Jaguar format.
@johnfotus716 patience is a virtue my friend i dont know what country your from but on ebay uk, yes only a handful of all atari come up a month but when they do fuck all people bid on them, i got mine for £7 complete including postage which is around $12 if the exchange rate is the same when i last checked. That was only 6 months or so ago and i have seen about 5 raymans since and that just from typing atari jaguar into the search engine
@haxor758@dde12321 agreed, the Saturn does look & sounds much better. The Saturn had its own 2D processor and a stand alone sounds processor. I'm not familiar with the frame rate comparison between consoles for this game though. You have to take good games on the Jaguar whenever you can :] lol.
the music on this one is more cartoony than on the ps1 which i guess would be a good thing but on the ps1 the music is beautiful (plus i have more memories with that soundtrack) and for that reason i'd rather play the ps1 version than the jaguar version.
I have both the Saturn and PlayStation versions of Rayman and much prefer the Saturn version, but I'd love to be able to compare both to the Jaguar version, as well as compare the Jaguar and Saturn versions of Tempest 2000.
@cod5x The Playstation was good for playing music direct from CD, but had a lousy sound chip. The Jag version on CD could have been just as good, and freed up an extra processor.
@ScReWaTtAcKeD Not true, Battlemorph, Iron Soldier, Tempest 2000, Wolfenstein 3D, Super Burnout, Ultra Vortek, Doom, Cannon Fodder to name a few are great games. The system had some good games but the hardware was old news by 1995.

@MegaMizfit he's called bzzit, and if you try playing the game you will notice many other differences about this and the ps version. Not like computer games today, they are all the same no matter what the platform is.
Also they game was generally made for the atari version, then playstation came and nobody had the jaguar.
@MegaMizfit the jaguar version was the first version of rayman ever. So yeah, the music is different and the sound effects are too. Even some of the levels are different! XD
Would've been interesting if Ubisoft made a version for the N64.
(You know, the console that actually was 64-bit no matter what way you look at it?)
But meh, I guess it'd only be looked at as a trivial version, definitely wouldn't have done Nintendo any favours either as it would've been compared to the Saturn and PS1 versions, further exposing the injustice cartridges were causing the N64.
Not to sound like a fanboy but whoever noted that should be kicked in the nuts. Funny you mention that though, I was just now playing Rayman on the Saturn xD
From worst to best, the versions most probably go like this;
Game Boy, GBA, DSi, Atari Jaguar, PC, PlayStation, Sega Saturn.
Jaguar version is better than the playstation version (this is coming from someone who has played jag, ps1 and gbc versions)
I couldn't comment about the Saturn version really but from what I can see it looks about the same as the Jag/ps1 version, and you can't see the improvement from ps1 rayman to jag rayman without sitting them side by side. I can't see how it can possibly "cream" the Jag version though, which you obviously haven't played.
No I haven't, but the soundtrack on the Jaguar version sounds atrocious. The physics are broken (e.g, getting the last cage in Twilight Gulch without having to sprint), in reality the only advantages are possibly the graphics being a little sharper and the breakout mini game (which looks like a rip-off of those colour changing bricks on Yoshi's Island imo.)
Don't get me wrong the Saturn version ain't perfect, it just simply has less cons than the others.
The Saturn was also a pixel pushing beast it's tacked on 3D doomed it though this didn't even have that... it's really to bad Atari was still popular enough back then if they had released a proper system they may still be in the game
I have this game on the Gameboy Advance, but you can't shoot white stuff when your on the mosquito/fly thing, instead Rayman uses his punch like normal, and you can charge it too. I've played Rayman 1, 2 and 3, but I haven't played Raving Rabbids yet. I remember in Rayman 3, the green flying frog (I think he's called Murphy), before he goes away, he says: ''See you in Rayman 4!'' Hmm... Could he be referring to Raving Rabbids? Cause I hope not, it looks crappy, and I don't wanna play it!
i completely missed out on the rayman series, but I have played raving rabbids 2... I am not a fan. it is not a full game like these, it is just a bunch of mini games. there's a cheapo guitar hero type game, and some other crap. it is fun for a few 6 year olds to play multi player... but that is about it. I dont know about raving rabbids 1 though.
goodflo911: This is not an emulated version. But perhaps my recording equipment (or the settings I used when making the video) affected the video quality. This was recorded 3 years ago and I record in higher quality nowadays than I did back then.
ShadowMetalBowser64: Okay. The Jaguar version is the only console version that has the Breakout game, but I'll change my video description to make it more clear. Thanks for the correction.
i never knew they mad rayman for jaguar wow this would be the first game i get for it when i get the console and the music is better then the playstation version
It looks about the same as my Saturn version, which is no bad thing. It demonstrates that the Jaguar was capable of 2D graphics far better than that of the SNES.
I hate the rabbids... not sure if this is the best one though... rayman 2 is just as amazing... not really 3 though... never played it but it just seems stupid compared to rayman 2...
It wasn't bad necessarily, but it seemed mediocre. It was definitely disappointing compared to the first two. As for Raving Rabbids, I did enjoy it somewhat. But I thought one Raving Rabbids was enough... they should stop with the spin-offs and make Rayman 4.
Also I remember that level where you ride the Moskito and he fires a blast. I knew it was in here, I used to play Rayman on my Jaguar as a kid. It´s weird every other version has Rayman shooting his fist, while this version has the Moskito attack.

Jaguar version sux... From the fact that this version doesn´t have an intro movie but instead some slides with text, u can immediately tell how crappy this port is
The Jaguar has the best version of Rayman 1 ever released. The PS1 version is fun, but sluggish by comparison. The graphics were about the same on both -- but ran smoother on the Atari.
It makes me thing that jaguar wasn't at the level of Sega Saturn or PSX or PC in that epoque.. because I can see that there are no scrolling backgrounds, moskito shots with its stink instead of Rayman with his punch when they're together, there is no star animation while rayman uses pink rings and of course, music
Eh right, I've been playing on way superior home computers before the Nintendo was even released, so It's not a question about what I've missed, but what I've missed in inferior ports on a 8 bit system. To me psx and ps2 are the best consoles ever, and basically the whole world agreed in terms of sales and amount of great games released on them. Also: I love consoles, but pc's have always been superior in graphics and gameplay in some gameforms like rts/fps etc). the NES wasn't that good at all.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Give it a rest, sony fan boy -- The PS1 version of Rayman was the worst in existence. Who cares about sales? Look at the Wii. It outsells Sony and Microsoft -- yet the vast majority of games for the system absolutely suck. Quality. At the end of the day -- Jaguar had the highest quality Rayman version. End of story.
(I own all three generations of PSX and a PSP. Doesn't mean I have to blindly worship Sony because of it.)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Eh? You didnt get it: the psx version was crappiest in sfx, but definitely hardest. Jaguar is superior to all other versions due to sound and sfx. I do think however, that the psx is a superior console to the jaguar.
I owned and completed both versions and systems, so I think I know what I'm talking about.
Don't be so judgemental and start insulting if you don't grasp the full picture.
I know. It's weird that the majority of the Jaguar's games look like they are 16-bit. This is one of the only few games that settles that the Jaguar IS capable of producing graphics far above any of the 16-bit consoles. I wish we could have seen the system at its best.
The the death of the Saturn was due to 3D graphics. It was a sprite producing machine. It could do 2D VERY well. But it's 3D hardware wasn't that good compared to the PS1. This wouldn't be a problem if they played to the system's strengths, but the guy in charge refused to release anything but 3D games. We are lucky we got the games we did. Imagine if more 2D games like Guardian Heroes coming out for the Saturn. Would have kicked PS1's ass, but no 3d was considered the way of the future.
Panzer Dragoon is a good example of 3D on Saturn I'll give you that. But I'm talking hardware specs. The saturn was built to win the sprite war, they didn't expect the industry shift to 3D. Sega Japan got TONS of 2D games that looked awesome. Sega America had it's head firmly implanted into it's own ass. A simular event occured to the dreamcaste. Sega didn't think the industry would shift to DVD so quickly.
Yes, you're right, I've often said this was a major reason for the Saturn's failure. The industry was ready for 3D and the Saturn didn't deliver. I never will understand Sega's mentality on this either. Because they practically kick-started the 3D genre with their arcade games. So when they make their next gen system (Saturn) they didn't think people would want to play their arcade games? That's what the Genesis' strength was originally, u could play Sega arcade at home. Sega just got stupid
But the shift to 3D wasn't the only thing that killed Saturn. Let's not forget the surprise launch, the $400 price tag, the 32X which burned anyone who bought it... and no one could blame those people for not giving the Saturn a chance but jumped ship to PS1. The failed Sega CD, 32X, and Saturn gave Sega a nice reputation for sucking, so Dreamcast was doomed from the beginning. If not for Sega's reputation, I bet DC would have survived.
DC not being able to play DVD's had nothing to do with the death of the DC. Gamecube can neither play DVD's or even regular CD's, but it survived. Fact is, Sega's previous failures but them in a financial bind, and they simply couldn't afford to compete anymore, which meant they had to pull the plug on DC.
Dreamcast rules anyway ;) It´s the best console ever... similar to the Jaguar in 1993 it was the best you could get in the late 90s... Unfortunately I sold mine :(
The Jaguar version came out at first. It was supposed to be a Jaguar only game, but as ubisoft wants to earn some money they released it on playstation and saturn and later on pc, too.
Beside it is a really good game it wasn´t the killer-application that could have saved the Jaguar, so I don´t care there are other versions ;)
Thank you man! seriously this game came also out on the PC in the old days. this video reminds me of the time my dad bought the game and i used a computer for the first time in my life. This game made me want to play games. Rayman is defenitly one of the best games i have ever played same counts for rayman 3 gamboy advance version. Those games have so much memories for me.
Hmm the PC version is definitely the definitive. I've owned all ports (except this one) and noticed that all of them had cut down music and some cut down levels while the PC just had way more to offer.
I sort of like this video though. While the music is lower quality it gives the game a simplistic feel which I find appealing.
the gba version is utter shit

I hate the rabbids... not sure if this is the best one though... rayman 2 is just as amazing... not really 3 though... never played it but it just seems stupid compared to rayman 2...
TreyRust 2 years ago
TreyRust: Yeah, I like Rayman 2 a bit better than this one. Of the 4 Rayman games I've played I'd rank them like this:
Rayman 2 > Rayman > Raving Rabbids > Rayman 3
jvgsjeff 2 years ago
raving rabbids THEN Rayman 3? woah....
I do think I agree with you on the first two...
but I don't really consider the rabbids part of rayman.... so yeah...
how bad was rayman 3 anyway?
TreyRust 2 years ago
It wasn't bad necessarily, but it seemed mediocre. It was definitely disappointing compared to the first two. As for Raving Rabbids, I did enjoy it somewhat. But I thought one Raving Rabbids was enough... they should stop with the spin-offs and make Rayman 4.
jvgsjeff 2 years ago
yeah, the style seems very... not rayamn...
and Michael ancel did not work on it much... so thats the problem...
they are probably going to make rayman 4... sense the rabbids are going home katamari style... and we get rayman!
Michael ancel had better work on it.... hard!

So, this is the original before GBA :)

Also I remember that level where you ride the Moskito and he fires a blast. I knew it was in here, I used to play Rayman on my Jaguar as a kid. It´s weird every other version has Rayman shooting his fist, while this version has the Moskito attack.

Jaguar version sux... From the fact that this version doesn´t have an intro movie but instead some slides with text, u can immediately tell how crappy this port is
CyrilCyberpunk 2 years ago
It wasn't a port, it was the original.
jvgsjeff 2 years ago
That is down to lack of space on the cart compared with Cds. That alone hardly makes it crappy.

Jaguar version was the best dude, way better than the PS1 version

Davitor39 2 years ago
most games sucked, underperforming in 3d
nooblet911 2 years ago
I own both.
The Jaguar has the best version of Rayman 1 ever released. The PS1 version is fun, but sluggish by comparison. The graphics were about the same on both -- but ran smoother on the Atari.
slantsix73 2 years ago 3
Ha, the Saturn version would like to have a word with you.

which version is better?
the ps1 or the aj?

yeeahh Rayman
BonTonSwan 2 years ago
It makes me thing that jaguar wasn't at the level of Sega Saturn or PSX or PC in that epoque.. because I can see that there are no scrolling backgrounds, moskito shots with its stink instead of Rayman with his punch when they're together, there is no star animation while rayman uses pink rings and of course, music
BNH89 2 years ago
rayman on psx was inferior to the jag version. I have both. Jag runs @ 640*480 60 fps, psx 512 *4whatever and roughly 20 fps, and no music:(
psx version is also great due to insane .. insane difficulty level.

Were the sounds diferent because of the console?
DabilahroNinja 2 years ago
Yes, more specifically because this was the only cartridge version at the time. The other versions were on CD-ROM.
jvgsjeff 2 years ago
wow excepting the music this version looks just like rayman on the psx/pc but those verisions didnt have that pinballextra game
RaiceaAndrei11 2 years ago
I had this on PC at the time and I played it to death.
this version seems faster though.
watcfhing this makes you wonder just how far could the Jaguar have gone with proper 3rd party support
lightdark28 2 years ago
I know. It's weird that the majority of the Jaguar's games look like they are 16-bit. This is one of the only few games that settles that the Jaguar IS capable of producing graphics far above any of the 16-bit consoles. I wish we could have seen the system at its best.
jtlbb2 2 years ago
its too much of a complicated system, so its difficult to get good looking games on it.
Sega Saturn is another example of such a system
the Saturn was actually more powerful then the PS1 but it was so complicated it usually looked worse.....
lightdark28 2 years ago
Perhaps but even the Saturn's graphics made the Jaguar's look like nothing, and Jaguar was supposed have had an extra 32 bits over the Saturn.
jtlbb2 2 years ago
the 32 bits issue means nothing.
technically, the original Xbox had a 32 bit CPU, same as a PS1.
after 32 bits, there isnt too much of a difference
lightdark28 2 years ago
The the death of the Saturn was due to 3D graphics. It was a sprite producing machine. It could do 2D VERY well. But it's 3D hardware wasn't that good compared to the PS1. This wouldn't be a problem if they played to the system's strengths, but the guy in charge refused to release anything but 3D games. We are lucky we got the games we did. Imagine if more 2D games like Guardian Heroes coming out for the Saturn. Would have kicked PS1's ass, but no 3d was considered the way of the future.
RunandGunPictures 2 years ago
I have a Saturn and I wouldnt say the system had bad 3D
I have Panzer Dragoon Saga and the graphics are amazing for 98
also the shenmue trailer for Saturn shows what the system was capable of
lightdark28 2 years ago 3
Panzer Dragoon is a good example of 3D on Saturn I'll give you that. But I'm talking hardware specs. The saturn was built to win the sprite war, they didn't expect the industry shift to 3D. Sega Japan got TONS of 2D games that looked awesome. Sega America had it's head firmly implanted into it's own ass. A simular event occured to the dreamcaste. Sega didn't think the industry would shift to DVD so quickly.
RunandGunPictures 2 years ago
Yes, you're right, I've often said this was a major reason for the Saturn's failure. The industry was ready for 3D and the Saturn didn't deliver. I never will understand Sega's mentality on this either. Because they practically kick-started the 3D genre with their arcade games. So when they make their next gen system (Saturn) they didn't think people would want to play their arcade games? That's what the Genesis' strength was originally, u could play Sega arcade at home. Sega just got stupid
jtlbb2 2 years ago
But the shift to 3D wasn't the only thing that killed Saturn. Let's not forget the surprise launch, the $400 price tag, the 32X which burned anyone who bought it... and no one could blame those people for not giving the Saturn a chance but jumped ship to PS1. The failed Sega CD, 32X, and Saturn gave Sega a nice reputation for sucking, so Dreamcast was doomed from the beginning. If not for Sega's reputation, I bet DC would have survived.
jtlbb2 2 years ago 2
DC not being able to play DVD's had nothing to do with the death of the DC. Gamecube can neither play DVD's or even regular CD's, but it survived. Fact is, Sega's previous failures but them in a financial bind, and they simply couldn't afford to compete anymore, which meant they had to pull the plug on DC.
jtlbb2 2 years ago 3
Dreamcast rules anyway ;) It´s the best console ever... similar to the Jaguar in 1993 it was the best you could get in the late 90s... Unfortunately I sold mine :(

goodflo911 2 years ago
@goodflo911 I would love a psx would be so much more convenient than having a freeview box, dvd recorder AND ps2.
But your completely off topic here and your an entire generation of console out.
Jaguar is closer ps1 than psx/ps2 lol clearly.
bobbystar101 1 year ago
i remember having this for the ps1! but this version looks much better!=D
TheLastLink265 2 years ago
This is the only Jaguar game that showed that the Jaguar was able to produce games that looked above 16-bit.
jtlbb2 2 years ago
I agree this game looks nice.
starblazers1969 2 years ago
The Jaguar version came out at first. It was supposed to be a Jaguar only game, but as ubisoft wants to earn some money they released it on playstation and saturn and later on pc, too.
Beside it is a really good game it wasn´t the killer-application that could have saved the Jaguar, so I don´t care there are other versions ;)

i played it on ps1 and loved it i was like 6 when it came out and played it all the time

sighh I used to play this game when I was 8!
mysticalsoul55 2 years ago
Thank you man! seriously this game came also out on the PC in the old days. this video reminds me of the time my dad bought the game and i used a computer for the first time in my life. This game made me want to play games. Rayman is defenitly one of the best games i have ever played same counts for rayman 3 gamboy advance version. Those games have so much memories for me.
ninjaapie 2 years ago
omg, this looks almost exactly like the rayman ive got for gameboy color!
tonyisback11 2 years ago
And, if I'm not mistaken, the Jaguar and PC (or MS-DOS) version are both the original, as they came out at the exact same time.
mtude3 2 years ago
Hmm the PC version is definitely the definitive. I've owned all ports (except this one) and noticed that all of them had cut down music and some cut down levels while the PC just had way more to offer.
I sort of like this video though. While the music is lower quality it gives the game a simplistic feel which I find appealing.

wow the sounds of jaguar are soft and clear, i like them :)
