But now that I'm older, and with a somewhat better sense of these things, I think you have to treat this scene as a kind of impressionistic take on the massacres. There's no meaning in portraying a massacre just as it is, but by showing how time slows down, by adding disembodied ambient music in the background, and having characters that seem unaffected all contribute to the feeling of total shock and terror.

So we're supposed to believe that after making a few lame, half-hearted efforts to warn people, the student just gave up to watch the show while bonding with his Dad. Then we must swallow that the African American jock is too dim to leave the school during an obvious massacre, wandering the hallways slowly, walking past dead bodies (!) with no reaction whatsoever, no sense of danger, practically begging to be shot, gets his wish. Hard to feel sorry for such a stupidly written character.

I watched the movie all the way through expecting a payoff. After ten minutes of the kid playing the piano, I began to realize there may not be a point to this movie that *I* could see. Teenage angst? Been there, done that. *I* was under the impression this movie had more to do with the shootings and its effect on the characters-I didnt see that happen. I dont even get WHY they went on a shooting spree. Was I to think it was that horrible game on the laptop?!

Ok, I get your point when you say what you were hoping to see (but didn't) in the movie. I'd read a lot before about the Columbine shootings so maybe the blanks (like motive) were already filled in for me. I think the movie was more about the viewer connecting all the spaces in the school, to understand where/ when things happened, and less about why. IMO, some movies are better for not solving everything.
If you want to see a REALLY GOOD movie of the Columbine shooting, watch the movie "April Showers". It came out in April of 2009. It was directed by Andrew Robinson, a survivor of the crisis in 1999. It is a movie that will literally change the way you think about things. It is really sad, and devastating. Extremely realistic. I definitity recommend it over this. Fer Sure.

Yep, this is definitely the dumbest movie ever. It's such an overly ambition, to the point of delusion, subject handled by an incredibly untalented director and writer. I mean wow. How do you make a film about the columbine shooting with 98% of the movie showing the actors doing nothing but walking. And that parallel narrative story structure is fucking annoying, it's not clever. When Tarantino does it, he does it well, but when Vant Sant does it, I just want to vomit.

a teen in middle america is so wildly inaccurate to the level that I thought I was watching some kind of weird dream sequence at times. It wasn't a dream sequence, it's what Vant Sant actually pictures in his mind when he thinks about following around a bunch of teenagers in highschool. The cinematography wasn't deep or beautiful, it was a waste of celluloid. Folks, if you want to see an interesting film that illustrates psychopaths and psychopathic behavior, stick to silence of the lambs.

It pretends that this is supposed to be "a day in the life that falls upon an unforeseeable tragedy". If Vant was flaunting his film around like it's a masterpiece then I guess it's fair to insult this movie on an effort point of view. But acting like it desecrated the glorious action and violence of a school shooting is quite absurd.

guess what...we do more walking around than you realise... Sant intentionally chose to monitor movements of the pupils, because it indirectly explores their pschologies...just watch the movie and try to understand something, instead of being bowled over by dumb explosions and extra effects...simplicity striped down is the beauty of Sant movies, and if you can't or won't appreciate that, go watch transformers or some other shit like that and steer clear of indie.
