Flail with a 3 section staff (3SS) and hits are going to bounce back at you (a true flail's flexible section is shorter than its handle to protect against this). Real 3SS usage involves trapping/sealing at close range. For most uses, two sections are used to snare/seal an opponent's weapon. You then pluck/pivot around the seal/snare and hit/thrust with the free end. Used properly, the trapping + hitting is nearly impossible to deal with. Less commonly it is used like double sticks.

its all about adapting and wearing loose clothing, the more loose the clothing the easier it is to hide a weapon i know this due to the fact i am also a crip hidden weapons is a fancy of mine and if u use ur little thought u can hide anything u can carry i can hide a machete with ease the same as a set of nunchuks

Yes, unless you wear your belt super tight, then you wont be able to fit your hand in there. but all you have to do is reach in your pants lol. it might look wierd for a second but who cares. also make sure theyre in your pants but not in your undies.

you all need to remember sum1 trained in the art of the "big swingin thingies" also known as the three section staff and nunchaku or nunchuks have trained for so long that using them to strike in a small enclosure is in fact no problem. the 3 sec. staff can be used like a stick and the nunchaku is already swung in a close proximity to the body that its easy to use in close confinement

Okay, I can buy that...but would anyone be likely to carry one of these things around with them in everyday life? Makes more sense to train in something you could actually use in real life, unless you're just keeping an old tradition of alive for its own sake.

as a matter of fact i do carry around a pair of escrima sticks (which are like nunchaku sxcept for the fact that their not connected) for a street fight in close confinement but out in the open i use muay thai to fight

Interesting. How do you carry them? I once knew a hapkido guy who always carried a hooked cane that he trained with religiously, but a cane probably looks less conspicuous than escrima sticks or nunchaku and is more easily explained to the police.

How practical are these weapons? When's the last time you saw someone on the street with one? Try using one of these long, flexible, swinging thingies in a narrow alleyway or crowded room and see how that works out for ya. Kind of difficult to conceal, too.

Yeah, I know. These demos are just about keeping "tradition" alive. I'm sure those exotic swinging thingies are fun to play with, but for self-defense you'd be better off practicing hand-to-hand against knives and guns, because that's what you're most likely to see in a real, violent encounter nowadays.

well if a person is smart enough...they wouldn't be fighting in a area without an advantage...at that point, the person would end up using the two ends for defense until they are ready to strike. and in a fight...the aim is to survive the attacks and switch his or her style for the fit of combat...besides that who the hell fights in allyways? You can't always choose where you fight. Lots of people have to fight, if not in alleyways, then in narrow hallways or stairwells. That's where many muggings and rapes occur. And honestly, who carries around these exotic ancient weapons in everyday life? Nobody.

But I have no beef against keeping ancient martial traditions alive, it's kind of cool to watch, and some of the skills might even carry over to practical self-defense.

I agree you can't choose where you fight, you say lots of people fight, but that is where a person should quickly observe the situation. It isnt really about weapon use in the raping and mugging example you offer but survival. If you were looking for practical uses of martial arts and observe this clip, its not going to cross over well.

Ever been in a housing project? Lots of narrow hallways and stairwells. Sure, you can "observe" the situation, but if you live in these high-crime areas, what then? You're gonna have to fight some time, that's inevitable. And sure it's about weapon use. Your attackers will probably be armed, you'd be well advised to have some kind of advantage, too. But I agree with you that these big ol' swingin' thingies aren't what you're looking for. I was just trying to say something nice about TCMA.
