you guys are dumb. the rules say that one player cant do anything to call attention to himself during the game on purpose. hence the flag. learn the rules before you flip out on the ref for doing his job.
@misscheerleadahh12 And the Walsh Players chess bumping earlier in the game doesn't constitute that? The rule is placed there to give the referee jurisdiction to stop extremely excessive celebration...which this was not. This was abusing the rule without a doubt. When your friend dies and you honor him/her with a tribute that harms no one and your penalized for it then you'd be mad too. It was complete bullcrap and you know it.
@misscheerleadahh12 okay one your a girl and you dont need to be talking about football and he carried his best friends caskit that moring so you can just shut up
@Korndog88 how the hell do you know that? everyone always blames the ref. "oh he lives in that city." "he graduated from that school." "he was bribed." you have no idea the kinds of things that happened on that field, or the kinds of warnings that were given. and please, tell me who the ref was and what year he graduated from walsh JESUIT high school. i mean at least get the school name right.
did the ref say the flag was for him pointing up to the sky? i would think it's for the entire team having a post-touchdown orgy in the endzone, jumping up and down and going nuts.
So what about the celebratory dog-pile in the end zone before he points? Kids jumping all over each other is acceptable but pointing up at the sky is out of line? WTF?!
This bothers me, media. A simple game, a misunderstanding, and now national news. Louisville had been warned about this excessive celebration all throughout the game. Here's a question. Do you think the ref knew about Dom? No. He followed the rules. And this kid, pointing to the sky, I respect him. And now what? He brags of his now, popularity. He/students say hurtful things about the ref, in which he did nothing wrong. Put yourself in his shoes. Please.
maybe the ref got sick of hearing the "n" word thrown around every 2 seconds. because i know for a fact that it was said during that celebration at least 5 times to some of the black walsh players. and that team had a warning about their excessive celebrating..as did walsh previously in the game. it just so happens that they overstepped the refs boundaries. it could have happened in any game..everyone's just being sensitive because their friend died.
@misscheerleadahh12 hahaha wow you have no idea what was being said during the game. i personally didnt hear any "n" word being thrown around and i was playing.....And i wasn't warned once for celebrating... i dont even know how they can say they warned us? you people dont even know the truth
@jlairson3 hahaha i have family on the team so yeah, i do know what went on during the game because not only was i there, but i heard parents yelling the "n" word and heard what your players were saying to ours. you're pissed because you lost. the ref was following the rules. at least be a classy loser instead of blowing this up. you had a shitty season anyway.
If you want to celebrate without the penalty, just do some type of limp-wristed gay strut after scoring and no ref or school district would dare penalize you for fear of being labeled as bigoted homophobes, or fear of a lawsuit from the homo community.
This is when the referee needs to examine the letter vs the spirit of the law. The rule is there to discourage showboating and the humiliation of one's opponent. The kid was doing neither, and it's a shame that he flagged him for it. Of course, we adults would prefer our kids to be robots than actual human beings. Maybe that 'excessive celebration' indicates the need for psych meds...
@Nooch1682 and all other idiots: Yes they knew, it's high school football. It's local people doing the reffing you moron. On top of that, who cares if you hurt their feelings, it's football, not pattycake.
@dustomatic1974 - Did they refs know that? Did the other team know that? NO. Doesnt matter what "honoring," play was still called as it should have been. Bottom line is: Lousiville was up 2 pts when they scored. The COACH decided to go for two pts instead of maaking the PAT for a 3 pt lead. The PLAYERS gave up 50+ yds for a FG try. The PLAYERS/COACHES gave up 20 other pts in the game.
Ok, question to everyone... Had this been a game involving the USAF vs USArmy, would the 'refs' have thrown a flag if either team had celebrated 'excessively'? We're talking about a dead friend, a deceased player, a fallen comrade. Is it fair to punish these highschoolers in this manner? Or do the 'rules of the game' outweigh the 'spirit of the game'? Hey refs... F-U! Why not turn a blind eye? The same way your government turns away from anything confrontational? As for the 'rules' - F-U-USA
NFHS Rulebook: Rule 5.1.C says " Any delayed, excessive or prolonged act by which a player attempts to focus attention upon himself." Was both delayed and excessive. By the kid pointing to the sky, he might as well have been pointing to someone on the opposing team. Drawing attention to himself was why it was flagged. Follow the rules and you wont get flagged. PERIOD! Not like the coaching staff doesnt know the rules. Relay them to the students athletes and learn from mistakes.
@Nooch1682 You're an idiot. Since when is holding up a finger to the sky ANYTHING like pointing at the other team? Would you call pumping your first in the air after a great play the same as punching somebody on the other team? And the key here, in your own comment, is the phrase "in which a player attempts to focus attention upon himself"... he was, obviously, attempting to focus attention on his dead friend. Penalizing that is going against the spirit of the celebration rule.
@dustomatic1974 EVEN the AD said the call was correct in an interview with Fox 8. The refs warned the players earlier in the game about excessive celebrating....they still did it after the warning. Enough said.
Regardless of what was motivating the players to gesture skyward, I see nothing that constitutes unsportsmanlike conduct. Nothing. Even the teammates jumping into each, which occurred BEFORE the gesture, was more excessive than the gesture. And the bumping was not unsportsmanlike either.
People get offended way too easily by too many things...if I believe in God I should have just as much of a right to celebrate it as those who don't believe have a right to protest it!
@RealityChecker77 "offend people" that's one of the damn problems with the country today, everyone gets their feelings hurt over the dumbest shit, we're a country of crybabies and pussies now, such an embarrassment......
How would you like it if we lived in a world were people had no sympathy for his fellow man? It's people like you who are the problem with the world. I'll be the bigger man and not resort to name calling.
Regardless of what the celebration was, there should be some acceptance toward what happens after a td is scored. It's high school football, they're kids/young adults. Especially in this case because of how dramatic it was AND the fact that they were saluting a friend who had passed. I'm sure they didn't know that, but still.. They weren't being ignorant, they were simply saluting to the sky. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Its easy to jump on the Ref, but the players could have went to the sideline and celebrated and pointed to the sky or even dont the moon walk and got on a knee and prayed. It was the right call at the time by the ref. The entire team celebrating was why he threw the flag.
This just looks like refs being flag happy as usual. The video is 29 seconds long, the celebration lasted about 10-12 seconds and it was obvious after about the first 8 seconds of celebration the team was getting off the field. It's high school football, and they scored a potentially game winning touchdown in the last minute of the game and it does not appear they were getting in the faces of the other team or talking trash.
@w103rtm Ironically this was only the 4th penalty of the night and 2nd overall on Louisville for the evening. The only other penalty on the Leopards was a delay of game before the game even started cause they were late coming onto the field. Holding, Pass Interference, False Start, etc. didn't get called all game, but a celebration penalty did! To add insult to injury Walsh's coach got a 5 yard coach's interference call earlier. 5 yard for interfering on the sidelines and 15 for celebrating
@TheSK818 Immediately after the refs LOOKS AT 44 and sees him raising his hand to the sky he reaches for his flag and instantly as #14 who he warned earlier raises his hand to the sky the flag comes out. Walsh chest bumps each other after a TD and a Walsh running back brings attention to himself by doing long strides after crossing the goalline, see the full highlight video for what I mean...this was bringing attention to a fallen friend not themselves.
@leopardsmedia Unless this high school league is different. I've seen people dive into the end zone like on madden football and no penalty was called. Bottomline..I've seen worse that didn't get flagged and I was a Sportscaster.
This is waay too much crap over a game. A perfect example of the pussification of America.
