Actually UA does own some of the copyright to James Bond. Even thought the UA logo hasn't been used since The World is Not Enough, the ending credits on the films say the Producers and sole copyrights are Danjaq and United Artists .. EON owns Danjaq.

It has been mentioned in a number of newspapers this week that "Duffy is a cert" to sing the theme tune to Bond! Although she has a superb voice and would definitely be the correct choice!!! It is the other way around, an artist using the Bond publicity machine to advertise themselves. An article like that will make hardcore Bond fans rush to buy their records, in order to attempt to figure out what the song will sound like. So it isn't "playing games," it is just the nature of modern high-profile publicity in the media.
