waywaywayway, Hey i'm a kiwi and tane mahuta is an amazing tree I have been there and it is hhhhhhhhhhhhhuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuggggggggggggggggeeeeeeeeeeee !
I believe this tree is the model for that big tree in Avatar, which I also think was filmed down in NZ. The reason for the walkway planking is to prevent the soil from compacting and smothering the tree roots. The roots spread hundreds of feet (meters for you frogs) away from the trunk, and sprouts forming new trees come up off these runners. Quite a humbling tree. The American sequoia, General Sherman, is larger yet.
Try a Google search on the keyword "Kairaru" and on the first hit, you will find more information as well as pictures ( artist's impression ). I have just notified the webmaster of that site that the diameter of Kairaru could not possibly have been 20m, but that the circumference or girth may have been so.
i used to have similar views as yours.. till i opened eyes, and smelt the bullshit.. all im saying is the figure known as jesus christ probably never exsisted, hey but people feel they need to believe in something or someone right!! there is no doubt tane mahuta is awesome..
Yes, the giant tree is awesome, at least we agree on something ! Have you ever been there ? Some decades ago, I was fortunate to be able to stand right in front of it, on its base, but only going to it in bare feet (=:
Look up "Kairaru" and the "Mercury Bay Kauri" from Coromandel. Kairaru would have been about 4000 years old when it was destroyed by fire during land clearing. The Mercury Bay one was felled for timber. I think they both would have been of a similar age and size. I understand Maori used some of these ancient trees to bury bones of their ancestors under, so it was no wonder how angry they must have been when these trees were destroyed !
Yeah, right (?). I suppose then that Kupe and the 7 canoes are a myth too ? Same for Captain Cook ? I mean all these events were recorded in writing centuries before you were born, right ?
Anyway what made you choose such a strange alias - bumfilmpoo ? Is it because it accurately describes your previous comment ?
@notdavidman : Yes, I agree. But setting aside the awful parts of colonisation, they fortunately do have a written language now, and have had such for many decades.
@rijkent55 many decades, not centuries, so you might want to be accurate next time you post a reply. im not trying to contradict your previous statement about jesus, but it helps to have a solid argument. :)
Tane Mahuta is the most amazing tree I have ever seen with my own eyes. I would not describe Tane Mahuta as a "god", but to be near it is awesome. This tree must have been a seedling when Jesus Christ walked on the Earth. To know that this tree therefore has absorbed a tiny portion of the CO2 that Jesus breathed out makes it extra special to me.
@kyliekauri tane is a male name, same with tane mahuta.

@rijkent55 maori didn't have a written language, nor did the people of hawaiiki. it was passed down through stories and such.

how dare you say that ? :):)
billions of people are certain of jesus.
he comforts them.listens to their prayers.
and they shall be rewarded after death.
