this day marks the 50th anniversary of the debut of the program. ABC Wide World of Sports > ESPN Sports Saturday. Even better than CBS Sports Spectacular.
Before ESPN, we had ABC"S wide World of Sports, this sports program was a class act. No sport program today comes to this variety of sports and the professional talent that announce the programs
Nice. But it would be great to hear the ORIGINAL 1950s NBC logos music, including the NBC sports march. It was NOT composed by limpywrist Johnny Tesch, who did weak motifs later. The original NBC logos were based on the NBC chimes. And are utterly creatively great.
wow, this a great old clip from the late 60's or early 70's. Takes me back to my parents den...we'd watch WWS and then of course Marlin Perkins on Wild Kingdom, gosh how I miss those days....
Sponsor I.D. "bed" at :31-:51 {i.e., "Brought to you by L&M filter cigarettes- 'Come On Over To the L&M Side- Just For the Taste Of It'....by Allstate, and your neighborhood Allstate Insurance agent - 'You're In Good Hands With Allstate'...and by Gillette, creator of the new 'Ripsaw' double-edged razor blade...'Twice the Shaves At Half the Price'.."}.
Oh, man! Thanks for that one! I'm thrown back in my parent's living room, watching WVNY, ABC's channel 22 over the airwaves, the only american channel that I could get, back then (we did'nt have cable TV)... And that theme ALWAYS caught my attention... Great memories! Thanks again!
"Spanning the globe...' How those words ring immortal in my ears. To a young kid growing up on the East Coast...you could watch TV and picture yourself driving the race cars or skiing in Austria, etc. If Tv only had the allure today of what it did then. RIP Mr. Jim McKay.
Vinko didn't die. He's still alive and well. Also, for those saying you watched on Sat and Sun, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought WWOS was only on Sunday afternoons. 1 hour after American Bandstand.. Ahh, the memories.. Takes you back to a simpler time, doesn't it? A lot of my video's are from that era..
Yeah I know that Vinko did not kill himself on that ski jump in a literal sense. But I am certain that wipeout killed his day that is for sure. I was very young when Wide World of sports was on so I am really not sure if it was Saturday or Sunday or both.
Well said "DRG". I was at the office making that same comment to an associate when I looked for this clip as I was trying to remember the theme music.
Now all we need is the Pro Bowlers Associate with the legendary Chris Schenkel telling us to enjoy "The Good Taste of Beer....in bottles." Ahhhh....those days. I remember them well!
@DRG1939 Coudn't you though???Man Sat afternoons at 4:00pm eastern was an event,Thats before you watched a little Bowling with Chris Shenkel and Nelson Burton.
Even without the visuals or the promo for whatever would be on that episode, this theme grabs you by the shirt and says, "You've gotta watch what's next!"
I had the agony of defeat. Then I got a new pair of shoes with arch supports.

memorable theme song. it would have been better with the film of the agony of defeat.

This is the BEST sports theme of the BEST sports show ever. I grew up with WWoS. It is shame it was cancelled. Thanks for posting.

God, this makes me think I grew up in the wrong age. I wish I Wide World of Sports was still on but Cable Television ruined everything!

Note to ncast54:
I'm a WITNESS...
Yre RIGHT, m8...
I remember ALL my Saturdays - as a lad in Chicago - watching the Morning Cartoons, Some News, and then.....ABC's Wide World Of Sports!
Back when WLS TV-7 was *STILL* WBKB Back In The Day!
And remember..that FALL off the ski jump.
That bloke's still with us, I think.
R.I.P. Jim McKay.
Thanx fer this Signature Tune Clip, m8..

Why do you think TV doesn't have that allure today? You are just older and bored.

Excellent find! This is a pure virgin copy of the original theme song, no advertising overlays, outstanding!
Great sponsor ID there, you nailed it beautifully, way to go.
No picture, no problem, that's another whole can of worms of which version was the best.

Yeah their is a classic scene on a ski jump where a guy wrecks (real bad). It's painful to watch.
crazyredlion4500 3 years ago
And that's "the agony of defeat"!
mrceleb2006 2 years ago
yeah that DOES look painful :( imagion doing ALL the hours of training and all just to have that happen
angelgirl7473 2 years ago
The agony of defeat - that surfer wiping out. Spitz pumping his fist in the air after wining a gold. Alexiev heaving 500 pound over his head.
