Never read the book, can't comment on the quality of the transition from one medium to another...but fuck, the movie was great. Downey was incredible, McCarthy was perfect, Getz was fucking bomb, and anytime James Spader plays a raging asshole it's truly awesome. Shame that this is probably one of the most hated movies of all time; I loved it.
@MaskoftheWraith the movie is much different than the book, the movie is about julian being on heroin and clay trying to help him, being the moral center of the movie, but the book there is no moral center, clay just simply witnesses all the things that happen, the movie leaves a lot out as well.
What the fuck happend here!? Even Bret Easton Ellis was too embarrassed to go to the premier, what a shambles this was. Since when was Clay portrayed as some sort of anti-drug hero or something along those lines, did the director and writers actually read the book! Clay was a coke fiend bi sexual in the book..not here..and no Trent either
@JthenH Really? You feel that the book will be better than the movie? Really? You really think so? Hmmmmmm.....wow...never ever heard anybody say that tired old fucking line before. Yawn....
@JthenH Just kidding around.....yeah, the book is ALWAYS better than the movie, etc. This film was on TV last night, and I hadn't seen it since the 80's......and it was really cool to see it again....take care.
I remember when that Chick was in the Lost Boys. I wanted to bang her but I was only 7 when it came out and was too young to go see the movie. Star was hot.
You know this is amazing in this Robert Downey jr movie he played a part that had a drug problem but in real life he had a drug problem thats really weird
On the contrary, the book is an aimless, plotless mess with no through line and no resolution. The movie was an improvement. Not that I don't like the book--I do--but it does not hold up. The movie does.
you guys are all ignorant, no shit the book is always better than the movie, because the movie is only 90 minutes, but the actors were all great except for jamie gertz!
My buddy John was in this movie...you won't know who he is. Don't try. He moved to CA in the 80s to be a model. He didn't make it. But a casting director saw him and asked him to be in this movie. He did. Ultimately he succeeded not because of a bit part but because he's smart, not prone to celebrity. Today he has more money than half the actors in this film. And when they look up, they see his house above theirs. That is Hollywood. That is an Iowa boy done good.
Okay, so I've read Less Than Zero, which basically made my life, and haven't yet seen this. Haven't read the new sequel book Imperial Bedrooms yet, but doesn't Bret Easton Ellis have his characters (grown up now) commenting on the movie? That's what I heard from someone... He would satirize about a movie based on his book. lol
The book is way better. This movie has very little in common with the book actually. They should have made the movie just like the book. I never understood why Jami Gertz was cast as Blair, Blair was blond. Everyone was blond in the book and I liked how Bret Easton Ellis emphasized, in the book, that everyonen was blond and tan.
@wdm6789 This is a movie I would not mind seeing remade, simply because they did not do it right the first time around. If they remade this movie, I would hope they develop the script from the book, not the movie. Also, they should do a better job casting, I think Amber Heard or Annalynne Mccord would make a good Blair.
@wdm6789 I haven't read the book but have always loved this movie. Soooo, does that make the movie less...for me? Wow, you read the book. It seems to me that the stereotype of tall, blonde and sexy regardless of gender was a cop out by the author. In fact, the move took a risk (knowing Hollywood) and cast dark and light hair (aka some Jewish?). The story is what is important...it could also have been Boyz in the Hood...would you say that movie was shat cuz a black had blonde hair? idiot.
@TDRHawkeye Read the book and let me know if you feel differently. Everyone being blond and tan part was a big part of the book. Even Brett Easton Ellis did not like the movie, he said it was miscast, I agree with him. I agree that the story is what is important, but one has to cast correctly to get the story right, and the movie did not get the story right, the movie is just an hour and a half long anti-drug commercial. The book is much better. Why are you referencing Boyz in the Hood?
@TDRHawkeye The characters not being blond and tan in this movie definitely takes away from the story, if you read the book you will see what I mean. Jami Gertz was great in The Lost Boys, but she is not Blair at all. That really bothered me when I watched the movie after reading the book.
I have read the book and i think directors such as the Coen Brothers would do a much better adaptation of the book.
The way the Coen brothers simply tell a story in there films such as Fargo and The Big Lebowski, i think if they stayed loyal to the book they would make a great film with this.
Epic movie! "Everybody" had that one fuc&$@ up buddy. True to it's time of life for the young in the 80s ........end of the innocence. Everything went to shit in the 90s!
clay is smokin cute !!! i love his smile and demeanor. it's a sad movie but i still like it. btw when LLcoolJ does coolin in cali and he gets up on her on the stairwell omg...i love that part ...sexy as heck! hehe umm i yap soorry
how Robert downey jr has changed over the years..Funny reallity has set in Robert playing a drug addict & hew has only just over his addiction in life
Probably because the book (extremely popular at the time) was so much better. I hate when people say that, but in this case it's true. The movie totally missed the point of the book (or, more likely, chose to ignore it), turning it into a conservative "Drugs are bad" morality play instead of an attack on the vapidness, disconnection and evil of L.A.'s rich. Not that its a bad movie (Robert Downey Jr is very good)- just heavily watered down.
@AcidJack1973 I agree. Bret Easton Ellis himself said that, with the exception of Robert Downey Jr. and James Spader, the movie was horribly miscast and it really wasn't good.
@AcidJack1973 One of the only "studio" films that didn't dumb down the subject matter of the book in which it was based on I believe is American Psycho which was also written by Bret Easton Ellis. In almost every interview in which he's asked about this subject he feels the same way. He claims it was weird watching the film version of Less Than Zero because it had nothing to do with the book he wrote. On the other hand he felt American Psycho was great and really captured the feel of the book.
