When I was stationed in the Philippines the locals I worked with would catch these guys by putiing an 55 gallon drum in the ground so that it's opened end was about 4 inches above ground. They would then throw bait such as chicken into it and simply wait a few days. The monitor lizard would be trapped and become a meal. Those suckers get pretty big. I miss those days. The monkeys were a blast to watch too watch too.
