Lucas And Spielberg wanted to introduce new mysteries to the Indiana Jones franchise that goes beyond Earth. Although I will admit the monkeys were unnecessary, but I can forgive that. Okay, the Star Wars Prequels sucked hard but the new Indy movie wasn't horrible. There are a lot of things you could nitpick in the original movies as well. Not saying the new movie is as good as the originals I'm just saying it isn't horrible.
I felt that the new Indy movie was pretty good. Like aliens are any less believable than the arc of the covenant killing an entire audience of Nazis or a set of stones that produce heat intense enough to burn through a sack when together, or how about a cup that heals wounds and grants the drinker immortality as long as they keep drinking from it. The problem is that people refuse to go and suspend your disbelief like you did as a child when you first saw these movies.
I managed to avoid this movie for two years. And I caught it on television a couple months ago. I used to think people were overreacting.
The only reasonable explanation I have is that George Lucas and Speilberg have become a scientologist. Aliens in Indiana Jones making us believe aliens have an effect on history? Midichlorians which indicate the relationship with the force? The new "cowboys and aliens" movie pushing the hilarious and unnecessary focus on outer space?
I've said for many years, long before he made the new Star Wars movies, that Star Wars and Indy Jones were great IN SPITE of George Lucas, not because of him. His special effects crew, the actors, Spielberg, and Oz made those movies great. And if you look at the documentaries, George fought all of those people every step of the way. The new SW trilogy is what George WANTED the original to be like. This time, he got his wish.
The problems with Kingdom of the Crystal skull aren't conceptual, they're badly executed. The fridge is no worse than the floating inflatable boat in Temple of Doom, and aliens made sense given the 50s context. The film was poor but Spielberg is as much responsible as Lucas if not more so, so you should rant about him instead. Or you could just calm down.

The 50's were full of paranoia, government cover-ups and of course, flying saucers and little green men.... Personally, I enjoyed Indy 4. I thought it was very entertanining. Maybe not that realistic but, very entertaining. I do not believe Mr. Lucas wanted to make a rehash of the same old Indy so he added a few trists to the movie. The only thing I did not like about the movie, I thought he used to much CGI to make the movie. I am an old head, so I love the realistic effect not the computer animation. Overall not really that bad of a movie. The actors were top notch, had a real good story not bad.

If you read the Frank Darabont draft of the scrrenplay its so much closer to the feel of the original films..a far better storyline...Spielberg and Harrison Ford loved it but of course George Lucas rejected it...I don't think iv ever looked forward to a film more and then been so disapointed afterwards.
About 3 years ago when I saw it in theaters everyone was all hyped up to see it-Indy t-shirts, hats, all that merchadise to show their support. When the opening credits came on everyone was cheering, by the time the end credits came about two hours later-the theater was silent-heartbreak and disappointment. My friend called it the "episode 1 of indianna Jones". So ya I agree with you dude, George needs to stop. But long live the orginal ones and the original star wars.

George Lucas has proven with the Star Wars prequels, that when given complete creative control over a project (directing, producing, writing) and unlimited resources in terms of money and CGI, he makes garbage. He has little to no artistic vision left and he only wants to make money. That's it.

I agree about the Crystal Skull, but the "Prequel Trilogy" You cant blame on being done so far after the original Trilogy. The entire story was written at the same time, but he could only get backing for the original Trilogy, thus why they are called Episode IV, Episode V, Episode VI. They were NEVER meant to be stand alone. While I do believe they could have been done better, the fault lies with his original financial backers, choosing to only pay to start in the MIDDLE of the story.

I don't think Lucas has changed his style at all. It is just that his movies look crap now compared to modern cinema, which has progressed a lot. When you watch his old movies, you forgive them for being a bit dated, unrealistic (within the landscape of the film) and riddled with poor dialogue. But those traits in a modern movie are unforgivable. So, it's not that Lucas has changed, it is that he hasn't.
What the hell is the matter with you....Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a fantastic Indy film. The aliens theme was a stroke of brilliance....1950's....communist paranoia.....Roswell....Peru.....Von Daniken....Archeology....you see, seemless. I felt that the new Indy movie was pretty good. Like aliens are any less believable than the arc of the covenant killing an entire audience of Nazis or a set of stones that produce heat intense enough to burn through a sack when together, or how about a cup that heals wounds and grants the drinker immortality as long as they keep drinking from it. The problem is that people refuse to go and suspend your disbelief like you did as a child when you first saw these movies.

I managed to avoid this movie for two years. And I caught it on television a couple months ago. I used to think people were overreacting.
The only reasonable explanation I have is that George Lucas and Speilberg have become a scientologist. Aliens in Indiana Jones making us believe aliens have an effect on history? I've said for many years, long before he made the new Star Wars movies, that Star Wars and Indy Jones were great IN SPITE of George Lucas, not because of him. His special effects crew, the actors, Spielberg, and Oz made those movies great. And if you look at the documentaries, George fought all of those people every step of the way. The new SW trilogy is what George WANTED the original to be like. This time, he got his wish.

The problems with Kingdom of the Crystal skull aren't conceptual, they're badly executed. The fridge is no worse than the floating inflatable boat in Temple of Doom, and aliens made sense given the 50s context. The film was poor but Spielberg is as much responsible as Lucas if not more so, so you should rant about him instead. Or you could just calm down.

The original Star Wars and Raiders movies were SO good and original, they were worthy of all the praise they recieved. Lucas and Spielberg deserve that.
But if War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones 4 prove anything, it's that you're only as good as your last film--which were both cinematic crap.

Personally, I enjoyed Indy 4. I thought it was very entertanining. Maybe not that realistic but, very entertaining. I do not believe Mr. Lucas wanted to make a rehash of the same old Indy so he added a few trists to the movie. The only thing I did not like about the movie, I thought he used to much CGI to make the movie. I am an old head, so I love the realistic effect not the computer animation. Overall not really that bad of a movie. The actors were top notch, had a real good story not bad.

If you read the Frank Darabont draft of the scrrenplay its so much closer to the feel of the original films..a far better storyline...Spielberg and Harrison Ford loved it but of course George Lucas rejected it...I don't think iv ever looked forward to a film more and then been so disapointed afterwards.

About 3 years ago when I saw it in theaters everyone was all hyped up to see it-Indy t-shirts, hats, all that merchadise to show their support. When the opening credits came on everyone was cheering, by the time the end credits came about two hours later-the theater was silent-heartbreak and disappointment. My friend called it the "episode 1 of indianna Jones". So ya I agree with you dude, George needs to stop. But long live the orginal ones and the original star wars.

George Lucas has proven with the Star Wars prequels, that when given complete creative control over a project (directing, producing, writing) and unlimited resources in terms of money and CGI, he makes garbage. He has little to no artistic vision left and he only wants to make money. That's it.
I'm surprised Indy 4 sucked as much as it did, because I thought Steven Spielberg could save it. But as we all found out, George Lucas's suck factor overwhelmed any chance that film had of being good.

I agree about the Crystal Skull, but the "Prequel Trilogy" You cant blame on being done so far after the original Trilogy. The entire story was written at the same time, but he could only get backing for the original Trilogy, thus why they are called Episode IV, Episode V, Episode VI. They were NEVER meant to be stand alone. While I do believe they could have been done better, the fault lies with his original financial backers, choosing to only pay to start in the MIDDLE of the story.

I don't think Lucas has changed his style at all. It is just that his movies look crap now compared to modern cinema, which has progressed a lot. When you watch his old movies, you forgive them for being a bit dated, unrealistic (within the landscape of the film) and riddled with poor dialogue. But those traits in a modern movie are unforgivable. So, it's not that Lucas has changed, it is that he hasn't.

This is exactly how I felt after I saw this turd. Plus paid for my sister, her husband, and my cousins on opening night cuz we were so excited to watch this. I'm still not over how pissed I was after we left the theater. Next night, I took them to see Iron Man so we could see what a real summer movie was like. I agree - but point out that SW wasn't really that great a movie; it was just that we hadn't seen anything like it before, and it was so cool that it was a trilogy with an interesting storyline. Plus we were the perfect age - I was 9. Ideal! Can't have that back. His movies didn't up in sophistication with we kids who were fans and then got older. I loved the first three Indiana Jones Movies (yes, even the 2nd one), BUT remember that Spielberg was part of those so that made a big difference.

i'll say he's not very witty or clever with this diatribe but ....couldn't be more true. Everything Lucas has done after the original trilogy special editions have been utter garbage (some would argue even that was unnecessary but I enjoyed) Patton Oswalt says it best, go back in time, kill Lucas before episode 1

LUCAS DID NOT DIRECT INDY 4, NOR DID HE PRODUCE IT, NOR DID WRITE THE SCRIPT. HE ONLY WROTE A ROUGH PLOT TREATMENT AND EXECUTIVELY PRODUCED IT. IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH INDY 4 THEN IT IS SPIELBERG'S FAULT AS HE IS THE DIRECTOR. ANYTHING THAT APPEARS ON THE SCREEN IS SPIELBERG'S DECISION, NOT LUCAS'S. GIVE LUCAS A BREAK FOR CHRIST'S SAKE ! Let us not turn this into a Hemispheric issue. This is not about American or Australian humor or "humour". Humor is "humour" regardless of one's geographical proximity to the "Land Down Under". Simply stringing together a flurry of "f-words" amidst a justifiably vehement opinion does not necessarily make it funny. Comedy is a craft. A craft of delivery, style, and writing, whether in the Northern or Southern portion of the globe. I'm sure even 20 million Aussies would concur with that.

Top notch stuff, Hugh, and I just gave you a 5-star rating, but while I agree that the Other Trilogy was a disappointment, I LOVED Crystal Skull, loved it. To those who say "Aliens?! How can you put ALIENS in an Indy movie?!!!" I say: the first one had the ARC OF THE freakin COVENANT, the instrument that provides a DIRECT connection to GOD, the creator of the universe and time itself.
