  • haha at o:56 that guy is like shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit

  • That's my Grandfather and he was a true hero in all regards.

  • they should just keep there gears up if there not going to use it , plus theres more of a chance for them to not flip

  • 0:09 wait, the floor looks like it's made of wood, is that possible?

  • @dburford9 Hardly based on the comments it makes the pilot of the plane and the pilot that helped save the wounded pilot courageous and heroic

  • There is better quality footage out there. I don't know why it is so degraded.

  • Hmm which would be harder landing on a WW2 era aircraft carrier or the new ones like now?

  • @dburford9 Why not? you do realise that most of those airplanes were battle damaged & in many cases the pilots wounded didn't you? lets see you try to land on a rocking flightdeck after flying 200 miles in an airplane barely able to fly with wounds from machine gun bullets or shrapnal, with your windscreen coated in oil, oil in your eyes, maybe even with 2nd or third degree burns on your hands & feet . those boys were a tough bunch.

  • 0:40 Class A hero

  • It amazes me how we won WWII -

  • @TheBeechingAxe Try Richard Overy''s "Why The Allies Won". We (UK, USA, USSR) won because we weren't over-run in the first weeks; we could mobilize, train & equip millions of soldiers, hundreds of thousands of sailors, tens of thousands of fliers and tens of millions of workers willing to work & think & run mortal risks to win; we were defending ourselves, not trying to enslave or murder others. And #1, we could replace leaders, theories, etc., if they failed. if "x" didn't work, we tried "y".

  • What a hero.

  • Returning planes were sometimes shot up and hard to control and/or the pilot was wounded, making deck landing difficult. I always wonder what happened to that guy who ran in the door just before the Hellcat hit. Hope he made it to safety.

  • you know what this new aircraft carriers should have if a modern plane crashes like this...a buldozer...new plane when hits it has multiple danger, rockets, bombs, fuel etc etc...like a huge bomb that can destroy the whole carrier...so when he crashes take the pilot out and push that sucker in the water...:D

  • A Heroism!

  • thats what heros look like boys and girls

    not nfl and sports stars

my dad and father inlaw both served on ships in ww2

    todays true grit is gone

  • NO catch on deck and and in war with bad winds takes the best pilots to do what 30 did and thats good! u can be the best and still have this happen in those days :( brave men and our best pilots.

  • them poor guys flying planes that were shot to hell and doing it hit , burned knowing what could happen to them but puting that aside and flying any way i think that's bravery

  • brave men !

  • the guy at 0:44 is a freaking hero

  • landing officer reacted above and beyond the call of duty. Received the Navy Cross for his trouble. Third or second highest award for bravery. All guts. He might have been a gambler also!! That's an FLP if I ever saw one. Sherman

  • @leesherman100 the Navy Cross is the highest you can get next up is the Medeal of Honor i think for the Navy any way

  • The bloke who climbed aboard the burning aircraft to get the pilot out is a very brave man!

  • epic fail at 1:19....

how dose the pilot manage to break the plane THAT badly. what, are the made in china???

  • @LABEOBICOLOR96 plane sthat day arent so strong at these day bu toes planes doesnt always burst into flames these days they do but there is the ejection seat made for and china planes where good u can fly them whit 1000 bullet inpact but they didnt fly home no kamikaze!!!

  • @LABEOBICOLOR96 probably had battle damage to begin with from bullet or flak

remember pilots might also have injury or wounds a shot arm/leg and can't control aircraft due to injury or mechanical failure of aircraft due to battle damage

  • That's my Grandfather, Walter Chewning, who jumps up on the burning plane and pulls the pilot out. When I was 8 years old, the navy sent a film reel of thsi to my school so we could all watch it.

  • @crimsondynamo cool grandpa

  • @crimsondynamoo Now that is a guy to be proud off :)

  • @crimsondynamoo

Wow! Your grampa is a brave seaman. That takes guts. Fire, plane ready to fall of edge. God bless W. Chewning.

  • these all remind me of what obama nancy palosi, and reids attempt at getting health care passed look like

  • And you would be.... what?

  • Let it go...he's an ass and the worst thing you can do is leave him to himself.

  • Ahhh.... those were the days.

  • @rick928 yaa like you'v ever ben in ww2

  • Not at all. Was not a pilot but I did serve.

  • One brave bastard at :40 climbing on that burning bird to help the pilot.

  • "burning bird"?!? who the fuck do you think you are? Some WW2 veteran jock pilot?

  • What the fuck does it matter, assmonkey? FYI the parlance is "bird". I am a historian at an air museum as well. Suck it.

  • 0:40-0:50...wow````good job

  • Fucking courageous guy on 0:45 jumping on to that blazing plane to save the pilot.

  • Wildcats

  • Well don't forget the axis soldiers who died for their homeland like for example the Germans or the Japanese, and look at people now days laughing at them like ignorant children i bet your one of them.

  • You must be on crack because you are not even making a rational comment. Read your history, if you can read. You sure can't use the right words to express yourself. The Germans and the Japanese were fighting their own wars of agression before we we became involved and as I recall, it wasn't by choice. As far as laughing at them, that statement just shows me that you have no idea what you are driviling about. Seems like you get your kicks at laughing at the ones who died to keep you free.

  • And your comment shows me your to dumb to even understand what i'm saying/

  • Speaking of dumb, I can see by your writing and your continuing use of wrong hononyms (look it up in a dictionary if you don't know what they are) (it's "too", not "to") that you are obviously still in the fourth or fifth grade. Does you mommy know you're playing on the computer? A few years from now when you graduate from high school, hop back on here and we'll try to have an intelligent conversation. In the meantime, have a good day. Now, go eat your cookies and milk and don't forget your nap.

  • Your comment is full of shit.

It's simply that English wasn't my first launguage dumbass, i don't speak it with my family.

  • I rest my case. Have a good life. Enjoy your freedom. If you meet a veteran, be sure to thank him. Good bye, Troll.

  • Alright, i felt bad for making that stupid comment anyways.

  • @ericplaysbass Well, the truth is that a war is decided by the fat, rich higher-ups in their government's offices. As for German and Japan soldiers, if you read a little literature you can understand easily that not all of them were nazis or blood-thirsty kamikazes (and that's an euphemism, just in case you don't get it).

  • this clips might be right after turkey shoot, and the crew did an awesome job at 0:42 ......

  • if pilots destroyed their planes in crashes like this, did they got any chastisement??

  • Were carrier landings something new and that's why the pilots destroyed the plane and the boat? Or is there something else going on that I can't see?

  • Nah, only that some of those planes came from a battle damaged, and a damaged plane is very difficult to control. And In those times each pilot had his own way to land, and you can see the results...

  • at this point in time carriers have been in service for about 15 to a little over 20 years(depending on which navy) so alot of bugs have been worked out and you have qualfided air crew and pilots, but naval avaition is a danerous job even when no one is shooting at you

  • Plane is cheap versu scost of a human life. Plus You have not inputs as to if plane alredy damaged by enemy in flight. if pilot survives crash; he is back where started, no swimming or relying on a pickup (from a destroyer or submarine)

  • Exactly. There many more planes in this world than there are pilots :P

  • Combinations of inexperienced plane fliers, crappy planes that fall apart the second it lands, and nervousness i mean your coming back from a battle and now you have to land on a small strip that is in the middle of the ocean not exactly "fun".

  • The last crash was used in the movie Midway.

  • 0:40. That's close!

  • why they crash landing?

  • thats alot of the tax payers money down the drain

  • Brave bastard climbing up the plane to pull the first bloke out!

  • aha the one at 0:59...he runs out and sees the plane and runs back in.

  • at:59 i would have been scared as shit seeing that come right at me!!!!

  • 0:43 heroe!

  • The footage at 0:40 is bad ass. I hope that guy who ran past the flames and jumped right up on that dangling plane got a fucking medal. That's bravery if I've ever seen it.

  • @ReductioAdAbsurdum i concur

  • @ReductioAdAbsurdum

Lt. Walter Chewning, climbing onto the wreck of a Hellcat fighter to help pilot Byron M. Johnson escape after crash landing on the deck of USS Enterprise, Nov. 1943.

  • that crash at the end was bad.

  • WOMEN

  • Totally disagree. -Woman pilot-

  • Brave men: All

Like todays Brave Fighters for our freedom,Too bad 1/2 the Americans dont deserve it.

  • OMFGGG

    :47

that guy is a true hero!

he didnt even take time to think about the flames surrounding him lol

  • no its true, thats how they landed them back then , do some history on it and you will see. Some planes also had to do it because the prop was so big (F-4U corsair) 13 ft accross , had no choice but to land the corsair this way as well.

If it were a cross wind , do you think it would be easier for the Carrier to turn into the wind and make it easier for the pilots?? or they just enjoyed making the pilots sweat? lol but straight end approaches were not good for those planes in those days.

  • y do the y come in at an angle and turn at last second???

  • Propably wind/crosswind.

  • nah, if it was, he/ she would've probably done a side slip... unless it was an emergency landing...

  • because the design of the aircraft doesnt allow for straight approaches, because the pilots loose visibility of where they want to land and because of the high angle of attack the plane must be kept in , it was decided to bring them in at an angle so they could see where the carrier was for as long as possible.

  • ohhh.... true, smart

  • ha that guy at 59 sec is smart

  • I know the pilot of # 30 and this guy is still alive and has a great memory 1 of the longest active navy fighter pilot of all time

  • yea americans good as usuall

  • even if that guy never fired a gun he is the biggest war hero in ALL history.

  • oh my god lucky them!

  • No Doubt! I hope he got a medal as big as his balls! Betcha they don't make fun of him in the mess hall anymore!

  • At 00:44, the guy who climbs to the burning plane to rescue his buddy, no doubt he has a pair of great balls.

  • Good Lord! At first it looked like that plane is hitting the water going overboard. But when it sticked to the edge of the deck it seemd all is fine, but then it caught fire!! And just when this scene could not get any more dramatic this guy jumps on the plane to get the pilot out!! This is what brave men look like. I wonder if there is some record of this incident and if this brave guy was recognised for this act.

  • he probably did as from the looks of the canister on the under side of the plane it is either a napalm bomb or a drop tank which was near the fire and was liable 2 explode at any moment

  • I agree, that was the true essence of bravery.

  • The probable story behind the crash sequence starting at 0:29--

(From Cdr. Edward P. Stafford's "The Big 'E'", a history of USS Enterprise (CV-6), page 262 in the paperback version.)

    Wednesday, 10 November 1943

In the middle of the forenoon watch, with the task group clear of the (Hawiian) islands and on course for its destination, the carriers (in CarDiv 11) swung up into the wind to receive their aircraft.

  • One of the first Hellcats to enter the Enterprise traffic pattern made a bad approach. The LSO waved him off, but as he roared low over the deck, nose high and under full power, his tail hook caught a wire. The F6 slammed to the deck and careened into the port catwalk flaming from a broken belly tank. One wheel and won wing dropped into the 20-millimeter batteries, the other wing tilted toward the sky and red gasoline flames boiled aft with the wind.

  • The broken fighter had hardly come to an uneasy balance on the deck edge when Lieutenant Walter Chewning, the catapult officer, was on it. Using the flaring belly tank as a step, he scrambled over the leading edge of the up wing to the cockpit and pulled the shaken pilot out before the running fire fighters and the asbestos-suit men could reach the crash.

  • Sorry for the thumbs down, hit by mistake . Meant to give a thumbs up.

  • Those pilots had some chanage landing on a carrier.

  • wow!0:50 the guy went to say the pilot from the burning plane!outstanding!

  • They were called The Greatest Generation for a reason much like this.

  • These guys are heroes.

  • Quit your bitchin` and check 0:42, raw courage on behalf of the crew, just remember that that is what they do regardless of politics.

  • No,Therom44 one doesn't make jokes about anybody's death.Just a little respect for these very young men who did not flinch when the call came. Can you say the same of yourself? And Iraq has really nothing to do with these shots.now does it?A little more good taste would not go amiss.

  • That's a brave man who rushed to save the pilot man I wish I had balls like that!

  • lol

  • 00:50 thats the best deck crew man in the world he knows that plane will blow up and he goes right for the pilot :}

  • Listen up, tadpole. I'm the son of a Chief Petty Officer (CAMM) in the US Navy and he lived through this stuff as a crew chief in the South Pacific. He would have gladly traded his Commendation Medal and Battle Star for ten more years with his grandkids and without two broken knee caps and an arthritic, messed up back. Learn to respect the ones who gave up their lives as young adults so you can fiddle your time away goofing off and making cracks at brave heroes on Youtube.

  • hey dumb fuck most of thoes plains are coming after battle and are shot all to hell so shut the hell up its not called a controled crash for no reason and breathalyzers dident exsits fucktard

  • i guess you forget these planes were shot to hell when they are trying to land and the pilots were shot to hell to lets not forget the shittiest seas in the world to land on your comment sounds like your at the most 15 years old

  • musn't be a yank, good sense of humor mate, made me laugh, its ok for them to make jokes about iraq etc with thousands dying, but crack a joke about yanks dying and its taboo, fuck em.

  • 0:58 was class (lets have a look at this plane) next second (OMFG!!!! RUN!!!!)

  • The aircraft at 1:08 is a Helldiver. If you look carefully, I believe you can see the gunner/radio operator falling out of the rear seat as it flips over. The rest are Hellcats and one Wildcat.

  • amazing, at 44 seconds, the rescuer jumps up on the burning plane to try to help the pilot. What a bad ass!

  • no just a brave hero doing his job

  • oi hes a very brave man

  • Yes definitely!

  • lol mad landing but.....

  • god, i thought the americans were the best at everything, thats what they all say anyway, not sure if they're much good at flying planes though.

  • Many of those aircraft were shot up and badly damaged. Think before you speak.

  • Obviously those clips were specifically chosen because they were crashes, you could find casualties like that among any country

  • the first shot-the pilot broke his neck on impacy

  • Nothing to say... Good work boys!

  • 48=crewmember wanting to save the piolet he derserves a medal he has plenty of guts good job!!!!!!!!

  • I thought that was excellent too, the plane is on fire and balancing on the edge and matey just jumps on it to open the cockpit, he could have burned to death or fallen in the sea!

  • second 48, that was a hero he run to a airplane on fire, that guy for sure gets a medal and the thanks of a pilot

  • True that man. Respect to a hero.

  • No doubt.

  • Hehe the wheel heh

  • i salute them all

  • Viva o documento eterno desses heróis!!!

  • Looks like the photos my grandfather took from his wwii service. Fairly common occurence apparently.

  • Was he on a carrier?

  • Yeah. HMS Ark Royal. Planes would crash and burn on the deck. Maybe the pilots were wasted after battle or something, he lost a pilot mate that way.

  • Make a slideshow of those photos and post 'em on YouTube!

  • Respect to heroes

  • holy shit i hope the guy that jumped on the flamming plan got a purple heart

  • purple hearts are awarded to people injured in action, but ye i agree with you that hes got some balls to jump onto a plane packed with fuel and rescue someone

  • agreed, that guy was BRAVE, nfuel-packed plane on fire and halfway to falling 30 feet into the ocean? and he jumps ON it!

  • hahahahaaa LOL, now thats funny, I needed that

  • Also, there is a picture of that heroic effort of that man saving the pilot from the hellcat. Unfortunately Youtube won't allow me to post links.

Google "F6F_6.gif" and it will be the first image.

  • Blueflame74589, you're incorrect, older war films often use real war clips for their movies. The movie "Tora Tora Tora" is about Pearl Harbor which would not include US Carrier operations or these clips for that matter. Also for general information, those are US aircraft from 1942 and 1943, most seem to be F6F Hellcats, while there is one F4F Wildcat.

To help out, the first one is a F6F Hellcat, the second one is a F4F Wildcat, then after that the rest are all Hellcats.

  • They were staged. Its in a old war movie named Tora Tora. My grandma owns a orignal copie.

  • Very brave of the crew to jump on a burning plane thats is hanging on the edge of a flight deck to try to save the pilot

  • Tommay 11, yes that was great thinking and fast reaction. Does anybody know when and where?

  • At 30 secs, that crewman who jumps on a burning plane to save the pilot... that's just amazing. ture heros.

  • Oh my god, 24,479 views, 12 forum posts, and I agree with every single one! Am I dreaming? Is this YouTube?

  • Bloody heroes. The reason we're enjoying our lives today.

  • Bless those guys who jumped on the burning plane to rescue that pilot. Brave.

  • that first one....nice fucking landing! even without the other gear!

  • Did they have already tailhooks??

  • yes

  • Yes,I've seen humans laugh,they are strange.

  • stfu

  • The crewman who jumped on that wing has got huge balls.

  • Shipmates.

  • I was thinking abou the same thing... He didnt hesitate..

  • I'm weary to laugh. A lot of these planes are returning from combat. They have bullet holes in vital components and in some cases the pilots are hurt and have to focus on carrier landing as best they can. I've often wondered if the guy who runs in that door just before the plane hit made it.

  • That one plane that banks left into the ocean might have been trying to land while out of gas. God bless 'em all; we can't thank them enough.

  • I can laugh at the non deadly ones

The one where the guy jumps onto a flaming fighter to help the pilot is just plain inspiring

  • Indeed, Link--I think it's okay to laugh when no one died from the mishap.

And it's far more good-natured than the obnoxious and hateful "stupid yanks" remarks that a lot of other people spam military-related videos with. Sigh ...

  • hey you kinda cant blame the first guy. his left landing gear was out

  • Shouldn't laugh , but hey, u wouldn't be human if u didn't !!!

  • Death by laughter.
