@dburford9 Why not? you do realise that most of those airplanes were battle damaged & in many cases the pilots wounded didn't you? lets see you try to land on a rocking flightdeck after flying 200 miles in an airplane barely able to fly with wounds from machine gun bullets or shrapnal, with your windscreen coated in oil, oil in your eyes, maybe even with 2nd or third degree burns on your hands & feet . those boys were a tough bunch.
@TheBeechingAxe Try Richard Overy''s "Why The Allies Won". We (UK, USA, USSR) won because we weren't over-run in the first weeks; we could mobilize, train & equip millions of soldiers, hundreds of thousands of sailors, tens of thousands of fliers and tens of millions of workers willing to work & think & run mortal risks to win; we were defending ourselves, not trying to enslave or murder others. And #1, we could replace leaders, theories, etc., if they failed. if "x" didn't work, we tried "y".
Returning planes were sometimes shot up and hard to control and/or the pilot was wounded, making deck landing difficult. I always wonder what happened to that guy who ran in the door just before the Hellcat hit. Hope he made it to safety.
you know what this new aircraft carriers should have if a modern plane crashes like this...a buldozer...new plane when hits it has multiple danger, rockets, bombs, fuel etc etc...like a huge bomb that can destroy the whole carrier...so when he crashes take the pilot out and push that sucker in the water...:D
NO catch on deck and and in war with bad winds takes the best pilots to do what 30 did and thats good! u can be the best and still have this happen in those days :( brave men and our best pilots.
them poor guys flying planes that were shot to hell and doing it hit , burned knowing what could happen to them but puting that aside and flying any way i think that's bravery

remember pilots might also have injury or wounds a shot arm/leg and can't control aircraft due to injury or mechanical failure of aircraft due to battle damage

Well don't forget the axis soldiers who died for their homeland like for example the Germans or the Japanese, and look at people now days laughing at them like ignorant children i bet your one of them.
You must be on crack because you are not even making a rational comment. Read your history, if you can read. You sure can't use the right words to express yourself. The Germans and the Japanese were fighting their own wars of agression before we we became involved and as I recall, it wasn't by choice. As far as laughing at them, that statement just shows me that you have no idea what you are driviling about. Seems like you get your kicks at laughing at the ones who died to keep you free.
Speaking of dumb, I can see by your writing and your continuing use of wrong hononyms (look it up in a dictionary if you don't know what they are) (it's "too", not "to") that you are obviously still in the fourth or fifth grade. Does you mommy know you're playing on the computer? A few years from now when you graduate from high school, hop back on here and we'll try to have an intelligent conversation. In the meantime, have a good day. Now, go eat your cookies and milk and don't forget your nap.
@ericplaysbass Well, the truth is that a war is decided by the fat, rich higher-ups in their government's offices. As for German and Japan soldiers, if you read a little literature you can understand easily that not all of them were nazis or blood-thirsty kamikazes (and that's an euphemism, just in case you don't get it).
Nah, only that some of those planes came from a battle damaged, and a damaged plane is very difficult to control. And In those times each pilot had his own way to land, and you can see the results...
at this point in time carriers have been in service for about 15 to a little over 20 years(depending on which navy) so alot of bugs have been worked out and you have qualfided air crew and pilots, but naval avaition is a danerous job even when no one is shooting at you
Plane is cheap versu scost of a human life. Plus You have not inputs as to if plane alredy damaged by enemy in flight. if pilot survives crash; he is back where started, no swimming or relying on a pickup (from a destroyer or submarine)
Combinations of inexperienced plane fliers, crappy planes that fall apart the second it lands, and nervousness i mean your coming back from a battle and now you have to land on a small strip that is in the middle of the ocean not exactly "fun".
The footage at 0:40 is bad ass. I hope that guy who ran past the flames and jumped right up on that dangling plane got a fucking medal. That's bravery if I've ever seen it.
Lt. Walter Chewning, climbing onto the wreck of a Hellcat fighter to help pilot Byron M. Johnson escape after crash landing on the deck of USS Enterprise, Nov. 1943.
no its true, thats how they landed them back then , do some history on it and you will see. Some planes also had to do it because the prop was so big (F-4U corsair) 13 ft accross , had no choice but to land the corsair this way as well.
If it were a cross wind , do you think it would be easier for the Carrier to turn into the wind and make it easier for the pilots?? or they just enjoyed making the pilots sweat? lol but straight end approaches were not good for those planes in those days.
because the design of the aircraft doesnt allow for straight approaches, because the pilots loose visibility of where they want to land and because of the high angle of attack the plane must be kept in , it was decided to bring them in at an angle so they could see where the carrier was for as long as possible.
Good Lord! At first it looked like that plane is hitting the water going overboard. But when it sticked to the edge of the deck it seemd all is fine, but then it caught fire!! And just when this scene could not get any more dramatic this guy jumps on the plane to get the pilot out!! This is what brave men look like. I wonder if there is some record of this incident and if this brave guy was recognised for this act.
he probably did as from the looks of the canister on the under side of the plane it is either a napalm bomb or a drop tank which was near the fire and was liable 2 explode at any moment
The probable story behind the crash sequence starting at 0:29--
(From Cdr. Edward P. Stafford's "The Big 'E'", a history of USS Enterprise (CV-6), page 262 in the paperback version.)
Wednesday, 10 November 1943
In the middle of the forenoon watch, with the task group clear of the (Hawiian) islands and on course for its destination, the carriers (in CarDiv 11) swung up into the wind to receive their aircraft.
One of the first Hellcats to enter the Enterprise traffic pattern made a bad approach. The LSO waved him off, but as he roared low over the deck, nose high and under full power, his tail hook caught a wire. The F6 slammed to the deck and careened into the port catwalk flaming from a broken belly tank. One wheel and won wing dropped into the 20-millimeter batteries, the other wing tilted toward the sky and red gasoline flames boiled aft with the wind.
The broken fighter had hardly come to an uneasy balance on the deck edge when Lieutenant Walter Chewning, the catapult officer, was on it. Using the flaring belly tank as a step, he scrambled over the leading edge of the up wing to the cockpit and pulled the shaken pilot out before the running fire fighters and the asbestos-suit men could reach the crash.
No,Therom44 one doesn't make jokes about anybody's death.Just a little respect for these very young men who did not flinch when the call came. Can you say the same of yourself? And Iraq has really nothing to do with these shots.now does it?A little more good taste would not go amiss.
Listen up, tadpole. I'm the son of a Chief Petty Officer (CAMM) in the US Navy and he lived through this stuff as a crew chief in the South Pacific. He would have gladly traded his Commendation Medal and Battle Star for ten more years with his grandkids and without two broken knee caps and an arthritic, messed up back. Learn to respect the ones who gave up their lives as young adults so you can fiddle your time away goofing off and making cracks at brave heroes on Youtube.

musn't be a yank, good sense of humor mate, made me laugh, its ok for them to make jokes about iraq etc with thousands dying, but crack a joke about yanks dying and its taboo, fuck em.
The aircraft at 1:08 is a Helldiver. If you look carefully, I believe you can see the gunner/radio operator falling out of the rear seat as it flips over. The rest are Hellcats and one Wildcat.
I thought that was excellent too, the plane is on fire and balancing on the edge and matey just jumps on it to open the cockpit, he could have burned to death or fallen in the sea!
purple hearts are awarded to people injured in action, but ye i agree with you that hes got some balls to jump onto a plane packed with fuel and rescue someone
Blueflame74589, you're incorrect, older war films often use real war clips for their movies. The movie "Tora Tora Tora" is about Pearl Harbor which would not include US Carrier operations or these clips for that matter. Also for general information, those are US aircraft from 1942 and 1943, most seem to be F6F Hellcats, while there is one F4F Wildcat.
To help out, the first one is a F6F Hellcat, the second one is a F4F Wildcat, then after that the rest are all Hellcats.
I'm weary to laugh. A lot of these planes are returning from combat. They have bullet holes in vital components and in some cases the pilots are hurt and have to focus on carrier landing as best they can. I've often wondered if the guy who runs in that door just before the plane hit made it.
Indeed, Link--I think it's okay to laugh when no one died from the mishap.
And it's far more good-natured than the obnoxious and hateful "stupid yanks" remarks that a lot of other people spam military-related videos with. Sigh ...

god, i thought the americans were the best at everything, thats what they all say anyway, not sure if they're much good at flying planes though.
THEROM44 4 years ago
Many of those aircraft were shot up and badly damaged. Think before you speak.
trigged 4 years ago
Obviously those clips were specifically chosen because they were crashes, you could find casualties like that among any country

I thought that was excellent too, the plane is on fire and balancing on the edge and matey just jumps on it to open the cockpit, he could have burned to death or fallen in the sea!

Was he on a carrier?
trigged 4 years ago
Yeah. HMS Ark Royal. Planes would crash and burn on the deck. Maybe the pilots were wasted after battle or something, he lost a pilot mate that way.

Make a slideshow of those photos and post 'em on YouTube!

Also, there is a picture of that heroic effort of that man saving the pilot from the hellcat. Unfortunately Youtube won't allow me to post links.
Google "F6F_6.gif" and it will be the first image.

They were staged. Its in a old war movie named Tora Tora. My grandma owns a orignal copie.

I'm weary to laugh. A lot of these planes are returning from combat. They have bullet holes in vital components and in some cases the pilots are hurt and have to focus on carrier landing as best they can. I've often wondered if the guy who runs in that door just before the plane hit made it.
Northside777 4 years ago
That one plane that banks left into the ocean might have been trying to land while out of gas. God bless 'em all; we can't thank them enough.
TheSanityInspector 3 years ago 2
I can laugh at the non deadly ones
The one where the guy jumps onto a flaming fighter to help the pilot is just plain inspiring
link10909 4 years ago
Indeed, Link--I think it's okay to laugh when no one died from the mishap.
And it's far more good-natured than the obnoxious and hateful "stupid yanks" remarks that a lot of other people spam military-related videos with. Sigh ...
