I do wonder what all this was about, though. I hate how the media just gives you teeny tiny clips of only the things they want you to see/know. If you listen, you can hear the commanding officer (I'm assuming) give a preparatory command of, "Forward". Followed by a command of execution, "Move!".

I'm torn. My brain agrees with those who advocate non-violence but my emotions tell me that the only way to stop these crappy cops is to go after them. When it comes to dealing with protesters, the police are always on the wrong side. Look at history & you'll see the police are the ones hurting people who are non-violently exercising their First Amendment rights--and the protesters always turn out to be right! Don't the police get that? Or does their desire to bust heads outweigh any humanity?

I too have felt torn between a commitment to non-violence and deescalation but the sort of behavior we have seen at Cal State, NY, Oakland, and others is behavior that needs to be defended against. I think what we need to do as a community is to device non-lethal, and even non-maiming offensive devices. I think can of a few things like for example you could use a foul smelling substance. What about the stuff that Sea Sheperd use, Butyric or Butytric acid?

Here's what I propose:
All the protesters at these Occupy events need to go down to their local sporting goods store and buy some football shoulder pads, knee and elbow pads like what skateboarders wear, shin guards like what soccer players wear and some form of head and eye protection.
Treat these protests like contact sports, so when the cops come wailing their batons you'll have plenty of protection to withstand the assault. Who knows, they might tire out before they can do any real damage.

Instead of protesting, burn down public institutions. Schools, police stations etc. Start grass fires to keep the fire dept busy and then attack buildings. Use marbles against police horses and pepper against the police and their dogs. If you behave peacefully then "they" don't know how to behave - and every time they respond violently they score a PR own goal. If you behave violently then you're doing it against people who have all the weapons, all the training and the law on their side.... and you're handing them the moral high-ground.
So if you're going to use violence - do it tactically - ie: untraceable assassination - but I'm not sure I'd really recommend that either

I do wonder what all this was about, though. I hate how the media just gives you teeny tiny clips of only the things they want you to see/know. If you listen, you can hear the commanding officer (I'm assuming) give a preparatory command of, "Forward". Followed by a command of execution, "Move!".
This leads me to think that they were given orders to do this if the crowd did not disperse. Not condoning anything, just making an observation.
