Despite the overtly sexual content, non of it seemed gratuitous.
I thought this movie was great but it definitely isn't for everyone. Some people will never understand this kind of promiscuity. This kind of movie shouldn't be forced upon people that aren't this sexually adventurous. Just because it has a lot of great things to say doesn't mean people should have to watch it. It doesn't mean someone is narrow minded because of how uncomfortable this movie makes them. Also, I was surprised to hear Animal Collective in this movie :D

@MightyMartel I disagree entirely with this. I am in not in any way sexually adventurous like these people and I absolutely love this film. There are many films about prostitutes that are very popular, that doesn't mean all of the fans were wild prostitutes at one point. This film is very well-written, hilarious, creative and entertaining, can you give much more praise for a film than that? And prudence is just about the only thing I could imagine holding someone back from enjoying this.
i saw this movie when i was 15-16 years old. the opening scene shocked me, but i soon understood what the movie really was about. prior to seeing it, i thought i was extremely openminded, respectful and all of that, but it changed my perspective. I finally got to watch this movie yesterday from Netflix. I think I heard about it from the Polyamory Weekly podcast.
Since I've already been exposed to many of the themes in this film, I wasn't bothered at all. I just found the movie really good and it presented some interesting themes to think about.
I read about this movie when I was in grade eight, already being in love with Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I'm 16 now, still waiting until I'm old enough to watch this film... It just looks so... beautiful.

If you saw this movie on cinemax, you'd call it porn but because it was surrounded by "artistic" and modern ideas, it now called "art" ... This movie was absolutely perfect.I usually feel very uncomfortable during movie sex scenes, but this wasn't uncomfortable at all.It wasn't meant to be the entertaining part to reel your husband in with, it was more of a way to really explain the deeper human interactions that couldn't have otherwise been filmed.
There are some important aspects in the movie: the lost safety in States after 9/11, the prejudices we can see even in a liberal atmosphere, the perception that all the freedom itself can't bring happiness.
But the thing I like most is the role of the chinese woman. She really wants to be happy, pay the price and deserves what she gets "in the end"!
just another shock and awe movie, take away the porn then it's just watching pretentious people complaining. great music though

@NickMep12 and this is EXACTLY why this movie is brilliant....because of the reaction of people that get sooooo offended by it. This is a writer who knows what he's doing...... it's a movie for people who are able to think critically and look beyond what your eyes see.
it's definitely a movie that separates the thinkers from the followers.

Well it's alright if you are not comfortable with watching two men (or three) having sex. Maybe you could watch out, though, when you write a comment that can be read by anybody. The word "sickening" is kind of insulting. And insulting people because they are homosexual is not "alright". But this is probably not a conscious mistake, I just wanted to point it out.

why this is not porn:
1. The sex is used to tell a story. In porn, the story is used to show sex. E.g. Guy meets girl on the streets who need to pay for college, convinces her to have sex with him for money, and they do.
2. Mitchell's opening sex scenes were a PARODY of porn. The girl faking her orgasms is just like most porn (not all, obviously), but the difference is SHE ACKNOWLEDGES IT. The come on POLLOCK's painting was a gag on the conventional money shot of porn.Read up about pollock pple

If you only see the sex in this movie then you are missing sixty percent of what is happening on the screen. This movie is about everyone being human and having human needs, faults and ways of expression. It is an erotic film but the eroticism is there to make a point. One of the main points is that we all have sex in a multitude of forms. If it feels right to you then it is right. There is also a subtext of caring for one another and helping one another.

This is a perfect example of liberal media twisting the mass perseption on what we know. If you saw this movie on cinemax, you'd call it porn but because it was surrounded by "artistic" and modern ideas, it now called "art" ... It's a load of crap! there is a distict difference between porn and art and this crosses that line. The idea that this is acceptible as art is even more appalling than when "Brokeback Mountain" was made and called art. This kind of shit just turns my stomach!

I mean you get a bunch of people on a set and have them fuck each other senseless while filming it and say "Oh it's not about the sex." then expect people to recognize the film as legitimate? The fact of the matter is that these people fucked each other (most of them were probably strangers to each other) for the sole purpose of film. Bull crap this movie is about how important sex is, its not art, its pornography with decent storytelling, its about people who validate their existence from their sexuality or lack thereof.
and those that do wish to romanticize it by claiming oh it's about the human condition blah blah blah , have never been in a war, experienced drought or famine, this is about an overly sexualized society that has nothing better to do than to bitch about sex.

This movie was absolutely perfect.I usually feel very uncomfortable during movie sex scenes, but this wasn't uncomfortable at all.It wasn't meant to be the entertaining part to reel your husband in with, it was more of a way to really explain the deeper human interactions that couldn't have otherwise been filmed.

There are some important aspects in the movie: the lost safety in States after 9/11, the prejudices we can see even in a liberal atmosphere, the perception that all the freedom itself can't bring happiness.
But the thing I like most is the role of the chinese woman. She really wants to be happy, pay the price and deserves what she gets "in the end"!
