What a lovely singer, actor, and woman! Discovering her has been such a pleasure. May she rest in peace, and how grateful we are for her talent and legacy.I will look for more recordings of her.
Thank you so very much for this beautiful remembrance. I felt as I did fifty years ago as a mesmerized nine year old boy sitting on the edge of his seat at the Lunt Fontanne Theatre the first time I ever heard this song. The sheer beauty and power of the orchestration and Miss Neway's vocal as she stood at the edge of the stage was overwhelming. I sat in my seat during intermission in silence so I wouldn't burst into tears. My parents asked if I liked the show and all I could do was nod my head.
Is this the MOST BEAUTIFUL, INSPIRATIONAL SONG EVER WRITTEN???? THAT VOICE, THE GLORY OR HER ART....I SEE THE CLOUDS PARTING! AND I AM NOT RELIGIOUS!

Patricia Neway was my great-aunt. She passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at the age of 92 in her home in Vermont.

Mary Martin was a bit old to play Maria, wasn't she? She was 47 in 1960!
