Tamiya cars had a certain attitude and character which is why they have those catchy phrases on the wings and are liveried like off road racers. Sure the engineering wasn't advanced, but there was no better feeling than to take home your favorite Tamiya kit. Mine was the Super Shot which I never had a chance to own. I got a Falcon which pretty much made my year.
I agree with rojman below. I'm 34 and this kid doesn't really understand it. "hmm i dont know what "being nuts is neat"... its just some dumb Tamiya saying".... he doesn't understand it and obviously doesn't respect what Tamiya was all about back then. "i didn't expect a lot of performance out of this". "by no stretch of the imagination is the motor gonna blow anyone away".... no one said it was.
And that's not mid-80's suspension technology. It's as modern as they come, just over the top.
Thats what happens when you get these journalists to review cars that were basically RC history. He has such an apathetic character. Cant take anything he says seriously.
This review is pretty lame. I don't mean to bash anyone but this guy is acting like the Avante is some ancient car like a Ford model T. Yes it came out in 1988, but seriously, this car seems OVER-engineered. This is the same guy that called the Frog a next generation Hornet.
The people who are dismissing the Avante will kick themselves for not getting one when it goes out of production, again. The HRC reviewer is right. The performance is surprisingly good for vintage, and it looks gorgeous on your self. A unique little piece of of R/C tech & Tamiya history. Price is a little high, but that's because for two reasons: the economy and limited appeal to mainstream bashers and professional racers.
@vnolton Yes, it comes with pre-load collars which changes ride height but it doesn't change the spring rate. Any time you add preload to the shocks all you're doing is changing the ride height, it does not change spring rate.
If you want to really wring the Avante out, you may want to replace the tie-rods in the suspension links. Titanium rods were the standard mod back in the day. The Aluminum rods bent on hard jumps. I wouldn't put a hot Brushless motor in it unless you have reinforced gears. Then again, I haven't gotten mine yet so I don't know if Tamiya reissued the gears made of the same plastic, although if the Hotshot is any indication...
@ProIceCube I had just had the opportunity to test that pack and I thought that it would be a good fit. The Avante also requires a battery shaped like a 6-cell stick pack which this pack is. My LiPos are mostly all the square bricks and didn't fit.
@HorizonRCdotCom Good stuff. As far as round stick pack, check out the new Reedy 3000 mAh Wolfpack Lipos. Tamiya TCS races uses Reedy as the official pack, so the Wolfpack will fit the Minis, sedans and some off-road like this that require round stick packs. From my experience with Reedy packs, the quality is really there!
@AlexanderOddersen1 Range is the same as other Spektrum radios. I have not had an issue in any of the cars I've run it in. I don't plan on doing an actual review but I did do a preview you can find on our channel.
Sweet looking Buggy you have there Gary and i really do like the look of it even though you know i'm more into the flying side of RC ;-) the motor looked the part too but it's a shame they never went for brushless but what do i know right ;-) still thumbs up for a great video.

I like it a lot, but it NEVER was a hot thing on the track.

I hate the unreliable front suspension. I think the DF-03 still better than this chassis.

I think i'll keep mine boxed until I relent and build it in a few years! Where/how did you hide the antenna?
njpfitness 5 months ago
@njpfitness It's the beauty of Spektrum! No long whip antennas!

@HorizonRCdotCom i'm behind the times then! Cool thanks :)

The shocks actually have spacers you can put on them to make them firmer. Spacers are found in the Parts 'Q' bag. 2 different sizes :)

I think I am over it now.

@shadow122788 I've really come to like it. It has a lot of the same basic features as the DX2S and DX3S minus the on-board telemetry.

@idrummerboy13 It's less volatile than LiPo however the voltage is lower. This pack here was 6.6v vs 7.4 out of a LiPo.
