If people still believe that choosing the lesser of two evils (monarchy or military dictatorship) isn't in the end still choosing evil, you're part of the problem.
Cromwell proved that a king is not given a divine right to rule. Charles Stuart was just a man and could be executed as such. This was a great inspiration for Robespierre and Danton. Heads off!
@guardianangel10 'persecuted Irish Catholics' - correction - he persecuted REBEL irish catholics who declared war on england by joining the King and allying with englands european enemies. What else should he have done, put his hands up and say 'I surrender!'. The irish declared war on england, not the other way round.

Cromwell created the first and only military dictatorship in England after swearing that he wanted to return power to the people and out of the hands of corrupt leaders. He persecuted Irish Catholics and helped to create the animosity between the two countries that still exists today. Cromwell was a fanatical dictator, why else do you think they still have to hide his damn head?

@guardianangel10 Cromwell did NOT persecute Irish Catholics. He went after those linked directly to the Catholic Confederation. While he was certainly no saint, he was in large part, a man of religious tolerance. He stopped the Puritans from taking over Maryland, and he let Jews reenter the Isles after being exiled for over 400 years. Irish Catholics, and the Irish in general suffered FAR worse over MULTIPLE decades from Britain than from Cromwell alone.
@guardianangel10 fuck off you cunt!! Cromwell is England an individual that took up arms against a tirant a man who believed whole heartly in the LORD GOD!!
@guardianangel10 You write 'why else would they have to hide his [Cromwell's] head' - it's not exactly hidden. It's buried under Sidney Sussex College chapel, after a relative was given it some time in the 20th century and didn't know what else to do with it so gave it to the college. I believe it's under the antechamber but no one seems to know for sure. You're right about him being a unlikeable dictator, of course.
Why must Tim Roth portray Cromwell as a psycopath? Love him or hate him Cromwell was NOT a psycopath! Charles I lost his lifetime stutter and spoke clearly and eloquently at his trial. What a terrible film!
@Tillyvalle LOL Like you expect a noblewoman to catch the interest of both Charles I and Cromwell in real life? It talks about the bare bones, like Hollywood usually does.
Everett SUCKS! Roth is not much better. Charles and Cromwell were both fifty year old men when this happened.
What REALLY happened at the trial, what Fairfax's wife (supposedly) REALLY did... that would have been amazing to see. Charles poking solicitor-general Cooke with his cane... and the silver TIP falling off... Mrs. Fairfax Shouting "He has better sense than to be here!" when they asked why Fairfax was away.
But no. They have to give Cromwell a bigger role than he had.
That look right at the end of the scene...such indigance but also so much fear. Rupert Everett did a marvelous job.

Yes. Nice to see the arguments put forward at the trial by the king given an airing. Pity it was all ruined by that nonsense at the end.
