See, whenever the great "Kirk or Picard" debate comes up, this is one of the scenes I show anyone who says "Picard's not badass". Picard could put you in a corner with words alone.
After watching several clips of Wesley, I can't but feel that, compared to many adolescent characters brought in on TV shows (circa Dawn Summers, Becky Connor, etc), I don't really see what's so outstandingly bad about him. Yes, he has personality flaws, but he isn't so bratty and whiny, that I want him slapped necessarily. In fact I find him kind of tame.
Whether it is I have little experience of him being at his worse, I don't know. But still.
Isn't that typical of Parents; "Do as your told not as I do"... Didn't Picard truthfully take on in his youth three Men twice his size out of Pride and it cost him his heart?
I love how Picard has to "explain" it to Wesley (who would have already known it) so the audience would know what it is. A very old theatrical tactic.
Like you can just CHOOSE which orders you want to obey in a military organization. If I'd tried that as a a cadet, my commander would have broken my skull open with the nearest blunt object -- or his fists, if nothing was readily available.
I'm learning to hate Wesley all over again. Thanks, YouTube!
@Seer1185 he was within his legal rights to not answer, court was pending and shit
your commander wouldnt have done shit, because it was already under a magnifying glass from legal because someone died, your commander would be reassigned and demoted in a day
@Seer1185 Assuming that Starfleet personnel have the same rights as US military personnel have today, Wesley is protected from incriminating himself. In fact, after Wesley invokes his right, Picard stops interrogating Wesley and shifts to just dressing him down for lying. Just like in real life, Wesley is probably in far more trouble for helping to cover up the accident--lying to a court of inquiry and to his superior officers--than he would have been for the accident itself.
@Vital - Yes, partly...i remember seeing an interview w/the writer and he wanted to break Wesley's image of the golden boy who could do no wrong or something like that. This is probably one of the best TNG episodes in the whole series, well acted by Wheaton too.
@Vital - Yes, partly...i remember seeing an interview w/the writer and he wanted to break Wesley's image of the golden boy who could do no wrong or something like that. This is probably one of the best TNG episodes in the whole series, well acted by Wheaton too.
It's too bad; for all of the first few seasons Weasly was INSUFFERABLE, and now around this time the character has grown into a well-rounded person. Unfortunately, this episode is the only good one that centers around him.
Kind of a waste of character development to stick him with the Traveler and forget about him.
this authoritative posturing is coming from a simiarly brash cadet who started a bar fight were he got stabbed in the heart , and even after a chance to reverse that fate decided to take it on all over agian
@jmm1233 I think the difference is that Picard suffered the consequences of what he did; suffered for them until the day he died (via his artificial heart). Weasly was trying to avoid what happened all together.
Also, getting stabbed affected only himself. The Starburst maneuver killed Weasley's friend.
I like that they tarnished Wesley's good-guy image... but not too much. Also, he's really cute here. Yup, I was one of the teenaged girls they were targeting by casting him, and it sure worked.
@Toast960 I couldn't see why you'd be so surprised about that. It took me the whole time to watch the video before I noticed it was a pun/obscure-reference. I salute you, and if you haven't seen it already, refer you in return to XKCD comic 902.
@Martintheauthor I Remember seeing Sir Patrick Stewart's Literally Smashing Role in his New Version of Moby Dick.
I recall reading in the Newspaper( now it woul be Online ) that that was commencing filming in the southern hemisphere. It is of course just a coincidence that that was around 8-9 months after First Contact premiered with the Reference to Captain Ahab has to go hunt his Whale... in it ... I remember seeing it on A & E in around 1998 or 1999 when it first was on. Years Do Pass..
I was here cause of the picard song, the part where he is like
THE FIRST DUTY OF EVERY STARFLEET OFFICER IS TO THE TRUTH, SCIENTIFIC TRUTH, OR HISTORICAL TRUTH, OR PERSONAL TRUTH. IT IS THE GUIDING PRINCIPLE OF WHICH STARFLEET IS BASED, AND YOU CAN'T FIND IT WITHIN YOURSELF, STAND UP TELL THE TRUTH YOU DONT DESERVE TO WEAR THAT UNIFORM. Look it up haha
I like it when Picard gets angry, it's a controlled anger, not ballistic as such. Both Sir Patrick Stewart and Avery Brooks (playing the best two captains IMO) played their characters anger well.
Kirk could out-clever his way around anything, and Picard... well, the fundamental rules of the universe simply yielded to the magnitude and epicness of his integrity.
"I'll bet Picard had his share of Go to hell speeches like the one he gave Wes! I'm sure he got a good one when he got impaled during his ensign days!"
Wesley get the fuck off my ship and reasign your sorry ass to Voyager! Captain Janeway is running out of disposbale little whiny red shirts in the Delta Quadrant, dimissed!
@MobileInfantryGrunt Hell yeah, IF he survives, have the Little Shit spend the rest of his time in Starfleet assigned to DS9 cleaning the heads with his own toothbrush.
"The first duty to every starfleet officer is to the truth, whether scientific truth, or historical truth, or personal truth. It is the GUIDING principal of which in starfleet is based."
Picard was only interested in getting his leg over Beverly....otherwise Wesley would have been tossed into a black hole along with his Atari a long time ago
@Blokecameuptome actually, deep down he was impressed with Wesley's knowledge on starships. He also felt he owed a great deal to Wesley's father who died under his command.
Wesley is a moron. He was an Ensign aboard the flag ship of the Federation and decides to go to school and become a Cadet who gets seduced by peer pressure.
You touched on something important. Wesley was spoiled/coddled. He is a kid who had little character building until this incident, and I am willing to bet he also has no spine. I always disliked this character a little. But, as I'm watching "hollow pursuits", you can see what a jerk he really is in how he treats Lt. Barkely, nicknaming him broccoli. But, he gets away with that kind of meanness & insubordination, especially with senior officers, because of who he is.
Prior to DS9 (which this episode was) the "DS9-styled" uniform was actually the cadet training uniform. When DS9 came out, they used that style of uniform to base the new uniforms on.
The first duty to every starfleet officer is to the truth, whether scientific truth, or historical truth, or personal truth. It is the GUIDING principal of which in starfleet is based, if you cant find it within yourself, to stand up and tell the truth about what happened, then you dont deserve to wear that uniform.
