I disagree-- Abigail was chosen simply because she is a great actress. Typically for plays (small like this one) they have to get a big name in order to keep a show running. How many famous deaf children do you know that could keep this show open. You also have to consider if any deaf/blind children auditioned for the part. Abigail's understudy is blind. I also think that it would have been very difficult to direct a deaf/blind child in a short amount of time.
Broadway is not disgusting! For one thing its a business and also its called ACTING!!!! Its a challenge for anyone landing a role of a character who is blind and def. If they gave the role to a blind and def person, it would come way to easy for them and would not believable. Plus Abigail Breslin is a name to sell tickets in this shitting economy with live in at the moment.
Broadway is broke right now...they chose Bresin because she is a huge name and will bring in major ticket sales. She is also a great actress. This is a business, and they have to make money (not easy in this economy.) They are not prejudiced against deaf people.
