Communism tried to delete religion to achieve a perfect scientific society called utopia, they ended up proving they are wrong. Religion is a social reality and the proof of it is that it is ENDURING.

Religious will in very short future and quickly approach climax. Most scientist are secular which mean as people understand more about the world and universe people will less religious. Right now people live to survive and when we reach Civilization 1 we will live to be alive. Nuclear fusion will bring energy freedom which bring food, water shelter and health freedom. All this free up time to be educated and thus less religious.

@duguder I think you're missing Kaufmann's argument. You're still within the framework of modernization theory as it was put forward by Weber, Postman, Rostow or Inglehart today. The premise of Kaufmann's argument is that fundamentalist movements deliberately do not take part in key parts of modernization and therefore immunize themselves against those effects. What good is nuclear fusion for the Amish, who don't even use electricity? What good is free time to educate yourself when...

@duguder ... you only read the bible or writings that don't contradict your worldview anyways? I think Kaufmann is quite right: you can only force modernization upon these groups or they will pretty much remain within their parallel societies. It's no accident that the rise of groups like the Mormons, Amish or even Evangelical Christians is going on in the USA where you have the maximum freedom. In Germany, we don't even allow homeschooling which makes developments like that much less likely.

Women in academia (e g scientists) have on average, say, 1child (in Germany less than 1 child), and religious people may have 2, 3 or 4 children. Here Kaufmann argues that demography indicate the opposite of your forecast. Enlightenment ideas may not be successful. Religion isn't meaningless for religious ppl, but makes teir life bearable.

The second guys's arguments are rather unconvincing. Especially: "There are two sides to an equation.  Part of the solution is to increase our birth rate." Wrong. A great danger the humanity now faces is overpopulation. The demographic transition was the best thing to avoid it.

I hope this guy is wrong. Religion is a CANCER of our species. All is wrong, be it Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, or Islam. If we cannot break the back of religion, our species will end at some point. Likely within the next 200 years or so. There are too many crazy govts, like the US, Israel, and Iran with access to WMD's and they more than willing to use them on "undesirables" when the find a political reason to do so. Religion is a DISEASE that must be cured with education.

Modernisation is a multifaceted phenomenon ever growing: especially women's emancipation and rising education- and labourparticipation levels are good reasons for optimism. But however optimist I am, this guy scares me. I really want to see some more sociale scientists comment on his demographic analyses.

The initial ideals of the Zionist movement lead by Theodore Herzl and David Ben Gourion was a humanist one: give a peace of land to the jewish diaspora persecuted in so many countries. This ideal was corrupted by the conservative East European Jews that insisted on going to Israel for purely religious reasons. Since then, it's been a bitter political conflict impossible to solve because of religious fondamentalism on both sides.

Just posted this clip on my scilog. And I would like to add from the perspective of comparative religion that we still didn't find any secular community that was able to retain replacement level just for three generations. Whenever there is secularization, fertility is plummeting. I know, that's an eerie finding, but Eric Kaufmann seems to be right.

@MBlume1976 But what it still doesn't explains are the extraordinary low levels of fertility in Chinese societies. In western 'traditional' societies which haven't a proper family policy like Germany or Italy fertility went to 1.2 at it's lowest point. Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore instead plummeted to 1.0. No other culture ever recorded such low sustained fertility-rates than the Chinese. I am pretty sure that mainland China will follow them when it finally is a developed country.

Actually I know many people who do have lots of children because they are fundamentalist. I found out that they understand how easy it is to get children to believe anything... so they have lots of kids to indoctrinate and grow their delusion - as they call it 'do are part to spread the gospel'. Also I would argue that religion especially Islam is a cause of poverty both intellectual and physical.
