Quiet Riot's Cover Of This Song Brought Me Here And My God i Can See Why Quiet Riot Were inspired By The Small Faces There A Great Band i Can Feel The Energy
I remember when I first cued this up on my turntable back in the 1960s. I wish I could ask God if He could place this tune among the remnants of The Big Bang, so it could resound forever through Space/Time. Power Pop/Soul at it's very best! What a wallop from those keyboards and guitars! What sublime and powerful lyrics and vocals!
@mickeymousebiker1 Damn man, Marriot really was one of the greatest vocalists of all time, wasn't he? Blows most out the water. I wish I was around for the sixties, but I was born in the 80's (the horror, the horror), so i'll just take loads of acid and put the small faces and assorted 60s bands on constant rotation to make up for it!
@commradedave I was in my twenties during the 1960s. I'm glad that I was around back then to hear this tune when it first debuted. Just get into the mix, and enjoy the music by itself. Forget the acid, Dave -- it's nowhere.
@mickeymousebiker1 true, to be honest i've been filling my features with shrooms, Happy days (toy town....)! and the 'cid usually rears it's wonderful head at some point during the summer (sunshine and sugar cubes), so not to worry! Until this point I am indeed grooving to the tripped-out beauty from Marriot et al!
Powerful, timeless, and soulful beyond words. "All I need is your whispered 'hello'" ..."Your eyes are deeper than Time" -- lyrics for those who know eternal and true love. This tune is for us, Barbra. Rest in peace until we meet again some fine day. Thank you, Small Faces! Britain ruled the air waves during the 1960s!
@SugarTownie If God could explain how we mortals feel when we fall in love, He would play this tune first. Man, what a souful and heartfelt tune! THE absolute best of British Pop/Rock/R&B! God keep Steve M. and the rest of this magnificent band! Cheers and God bless to all in the U.K. We in The States love ya!
@SugarTownie A simply incredible tune! This tune makes me wish I could have visited England during the mid-1960s. Brit bands truly ruled the airwaves then. Best from the States.
I forgot how good this was. Why did he have 2 die so soon cos he still had the voice in later life plus I had written a song specially for him 2 record.
@Agck16 From what I read on another post, it was Steve who fell asleep with a still lit cigarette and it might've fell plus Steve may have not been sober.
the songs of the 60's are the most covered by artists today like Dylan, Beatles, Beach Boys and so many more!! who would want to cover crappy soppy boppy music that is shoved into our faces nowadays!!... gimme 50's, 60's and maybe 70's music anytime!!
What always gets me about this song is that it isn't just a great song, it's like a textbook sixties rock song in the best sense possible. Listen closely - from 0:45 to 1:35, it literally runs through four distinct styles of song construction, all of which sound vaguely like other songs. Yet no other song sounds like "Tin Soldier".
This song was released on the Immediate label, with "I Feel Much Better" on the flip side. Supposedly written by Steve Marriott to woo his future wife Jenny Rylance, Marriott intended to give the song to P.P. Arnold, with whom he had had a short-term relationship in the same year. When the song was finished, he liked it so much that he decided to keep it for The Small Faces and gave Arnold "If You Think You're Groovy" instead
jus like the intro

this is IMO the best pop song of all time. The energy, Stevie's powerful vocals, the way it builds and crescendos.
The two Steves - Winwood (Spencer Davis Group) and Marriott were maybe the best vocalists of the era.
Thanks for posting - great music never dies, no matter the period
