How did you teach him to relax while having his legs and hooves handled?

We do everything in small steps...praising him for allowing us to rub his shoulder, down the upper leg, down the lower leg. reward him for lifting the foot even without us holding it at all. then letting us hold it just briefly. then holding it long enough to clean it. when he is good enough to easily pick the hoof, then we start doing farrier holds to prep him for trims and so on. all small steps.
