  • STV is a pile of crap. Do your research.

  • Why, what kind of research did you do?

  • The kind that the province did in order to deny STV the opportunity to completely screw up our province 4 months ago.

  • That doesn't sound very informed.

What are your arguments against STV?

  • This would have been worth the time before the election, but I don't see the point in it now. Any information you would want is available online. You informing yourself is not my responsibility.

  • I'm on the executive of the Ottawa chapter for Fair Vote Canada.

I was wondering what were your reasons for voting against it. Informing you is my responsibility. :-)

  • Is getting on an executive a quick way to the top?

Informing me is not your responibility, but mine, and being a prick about isn't going to help you, or me.

    Please leave me alone now.

  • I wasn't being a prick. I was trying to get you to tell me why you voted against it. You're avoiding my question.

  • Killa, I can help you out!

This video makes the ludicrous claim at 1:11 that STV will increase stability, when in fact it is the total opposite! How can you claim increased stability when if we had STV we would have had one majority in the last 43 years? More minorities=more elections=more politicians focusing exclusively on short-term political gain. Not to mention small parties will have a veto on policy.

Please, practice safe voting on May 12 and don't let BC catch this electoral disease.

  • If you are measuring stability by the number of elections, between 1945 and 1998 countries using a plurality system like ours had, on average, 16.7 elections, whereas countries using a form of proportional representation had 16. So they're about the same on that front. Centrist legislation and an end to policy reversals as we shift from one majority government to the next (that seldom represents a majority of voters) makes sense to me.

  • In our federal government, minorities have produced 3 elections in 4 years, and increasingly seeming like 4 in 5 know. I would think that if we had minorities in BC they would more likely follow rescent Canadian patterns rather than older foreign ones, no?

  • Point well taken, but I'd say the federal Liberals and Conservatives operate under the assumption that national politics will return to the "norm" of majority governments, and in that sense cooperation isn't seen as a necessary part of politics. Were there a system of PR that produced minority governments as a matter of course, parties would have to get used to the idea of working together rather quickly, possibly in coalitions, to produce collaborative legislation and avoid alienating voters.

  • I suppouse there are endless variables, especially cockiness levels. All I can say is even if I don't agree with STV BC politics won't be boring for a long time if it passes!

  • The stability comes from the fact that the politicians have to work together on the legislation more. Now, whenever the government changes, they throw away whatever the last people did, which is a waste of time and money. Besides lots of countries with proportional representation have majority govts and the others are run by majority coalitions that people know about it advance.

  • Great job! Thanks for posting.

  • STV is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of

  • This electoral reform is one of the most carefully thought through political issues I have seen. When a large assembly of randomly selected citizens takes a year to research options and then votes 95% on a recommendation...sounds smart to me.

  • its like a class president election and when the kid wins the teachers says to him "good for you but, now we're gunna take all your extra votes to the others so they can play too" its stupid just leave voting how it is

  • No it's like you have a team of three class presidents, and if you vote for the unpopular guy who has no hope, your vote goes to your second choice, who does get in.

  • Thanks, killa, for a critique that's so well thought out.

  • Wooo! Where can i download the song?

  • Great song! Let's all get out and spread the word before the election. The No STV attack ads have already started. Please, get involved and send in a donation if you can afford it.

  • Beauty!

  • so good!

    yay stv!!!!!!!

  • Awesome job man

  • Well done. I hope it (STV) succeeds this time.

  • Spread this video far and wide. It will do more to sway votes for STV than any other campaign piece. And this guy should be on tour across the province!

  • great song, it reminds me of Hotel Yorba by the White Stripes :) Go STV!

  • it is! i hope they don't mind we stole their chords!

  • Yay! Finally smaller more progressive parties will have a chance to represent their voters!

    GO STV GO!

  • All we need now is full orchestra back-up. :-)

  • Parties fret it; voters get it! BC-STV!

  • Great tune, try to improve the video quality. Go STV!!

  • Victory is ours!

    Julien (phone canvassing from Ottawa)

  • That was amazing. Good luck raising awareness for this campaign.

  • Woohoo!! Love it! We're gonna win this one!
