I remember this song from last year... Had to possiblyh be my bestyear in band... This song has so much sentimental value to me, with all that I went through my freshman year, and losing the ones I lost it still waters me up to this day. I remember how much Mac band put into this and when we first got it how we were like wth is this but then it grew and I have so much love and respect for this song... really. R.I.P Lauri!
Not sure if you knew this, but the composer John Barnes Chance died shortly before this piece was published. He was accidently electrocuted at his house. This piece is haunting enough already, and then to find that out...creepy. This band took it way too fast though. 6:30 minutes, should be more like 9:30 minutes : ) But I guess to get the intonation right some groups have to play it at a much faster tempo. It just kinda ruins the effectiveness of the piece in my opinion.
lol...we got a 1 on this piece but it was close...good luck and i hope that you guys stay in tune for most, if not all the piece!! i was first flute in this song and it wasnt too bad... (it was pretty easy for me!! lol) well good luck!
my wind esemble band at Health Careers High School just started playing this. we are a magnet school for high schoolers hoping to get into medical careers, so band really isn't our primary objective. But this year the Director's want us to be as good, if THE BEST at UIL. And it just is a magnificent piece, I enjoy listening to it. I'm really glad I'm tuba, so I rest at all the cool parts XD Hearing this helps me, cuz we don't fair to bad against this and atleast I know we are doing good.
sorry ran out of space...anyways the high, really intense parts played by this band are pretty nice. I like our bands sound better though. Being a small school we have a smaller band size. All the players OWN and our piccolo player just tears this piece up and remakes it. He made it all worth while for me...and our Basoon owns too.
Played this in an all-region band in Texas 32 years ago with Frederick Fennell Directing. He was an incredible director and just last month my daughter had the opportunity to play it as well.
I played it in my high school band 30 plus years ago. I have a recording of it and it could bring me to tears easily. We took it alot slower than this. Very moving if played right.
I believe my high school band performed this for the UIL thingy one year. I don't remember what year it was. Nobody liked it, lol. I thought it was ok. Not my favorite but not horrible either. Ya know, I think it was my freshman year but I can't be too sure. I think I remember the bari sax player tellin me he didn't like 7ths or whatever (the altos and tenors have the same notes in the beginning or something like that)
this was one of the best perfomances i did .. i was the french horn player and it was hard but we got 1s bby =)

A good performance. But I've heard great performances of this piece that clock in around 9 min.

I feel bad for the clarinetist at 3:00. i think it took us like 5 full rehearsals and 2 sectional rehearsals for ours to make it without sqeeking.
this song got us straight Ones at contest grade six, 'AAAA'! Eugene Ashley HS '06-'09 know how to cry while performing JBC!
