Yeah, there is a lot of crime, yeah, conditions were crappy in N.O., due to SYSTEMIC INADEQUACIES -the schools are a joke, the police are underpaid, and over-worked and the tax code makes for an underserved poor population. However, home ownership was higher than any other poor community in the country and now that's gone. This is not as simple as you'd like it to be.

Those statistics are gathered by the US government and are out in the public domain for anyone doublecheck if they have a mind to. Read "The Color of Crime" for a good summary of the most important info the cops and the courts keep track of (at least in the US). FEMA even had a training program that outlined a strategy as to how to handle such a similar event in the area years before this happened. The levees failed mostly because of a 1965 faulty design and chiefly because the floodwall was not completed, as for 40 years there was no sense of urgency from the local Government, the COE, or from Congress. President Bush was 19 yo in 1965..Why do you blame him for?

As being from St.Bernard, NOLA suburb, I koow they are helping people, the question is what have they done with all the donations because they are not reaching us. Early on we got $2000 FEMA and red cross. I was greatful because I lost everything, even my wife's purse with all they money, ID's.. Thats it!
I'm worried about the big picture. After surviving Katrina, seeing how officials treat good people, in respond to disaster, like we were leapers in a leper colony, or like the movie the siege. They really don't have a clue as to what there doing, and the foresight to see how it effects things down the road, i.e. Iraq. Katrina wasn't his fault at all. In fact the local and state government assured him they were fine before the storm. But it was found out later then they didn't follow procedure. One local congressmen was indicted for using the National Guard to remove personal items from his home.

I've lived in New Orleans so don't try to peddle your small minded prejudice to me, I know what I'm talking about. Yeah, there is a lot of crime, yeah, conditions were crappy in N.O., due to SYSTEMIC INADEQUACIES -the schools are a joke, the police are underpaid, and over-worked and the tax code makes for an underserved poor population. However, home ownership was higher than any other poor community in the country and now that's gone. This is not as simple as you'd like it to be.

Those statistics are gathered by the US government and are out in the public domain for anyone doublecheck if they have a mind to. Read "The Color of Crime" for a good summary of the most important info the cops and the courts keep track of (at least in the US). Blacks don't have social problems for us to solve so much as they ARE a social problem to be solved. One important method in widespread use, to limit their violence is to warehouse them in places like New Orleans.

The irony is that the Danish came to New Orleans a long, long time ago to see how to build a Levee system ... the difference is that their government followed through with investments in the infrastructure and funded the contruction of their levee system. Our government ignored it's own legislation and never got the funding to the Army Corps of Engineers to update the New Orleans levees ... for 40 years the legislation was in place and the money never showed up.

Ok I realize that Katrina caused massive damage to a wide spread area but DAMN!!! The destruction of 9/11 was takin care of in a MUCH quicker manner than Katrina was. FEMA even had a training program that outlined a strategy as to how to handle such a similar event in the area years before this happened. I unfortunately can not recall the project name, but read about on the the FEMA website, but governmental funding was cut. Gee George I wonder why??

Since the levees are owned and the responsibility of the Army Corps of Engineers, a FEDERAL government agency, who were supposed to inspect, repair and strengthen the levees until YOUR President and his administration took the money to do it and put it into Iraq instead are responsible. What happened after is a travesty, but it wouldn't have happened if not for your President's taking of the funds and inaction. CASE CLOSED....

In some cases you might be able to expand the existing levee system and work from that. It could be 10 or 15 or 20 years.

In the (pending) release of the Government Accountability Office's report on Iraq, leaked to the Washington Post, regarding the Iraqi govenrment, it has been stated, "Overall, key legislation has not been passed, violence remains high, and it is unclear whether the Iraqi government will spend $10bn in reconstruction funds."

I lived in New Orleans for 2 years. The city government is incompetant, corrupt and inept. What happened there didn't surprise me when buses were left unused to evacuate it's citizens.

I disagree. The economy is been going exceptionally well and we have amazingly prevented another 9/11 when there are so many security holes to fill. I would like him to be much more aggressive on the border issue though.

He would love for it to happen again so people can be scared and actually think he's doing a good job. More studies are showing he caused 9/11 with Saudi Arabia so he could attack Iraq. Sad that people that live (ed) in New Orleans don't know their own history of the city and what it is built on... a LIVING SWAMP. Very little of New Orleans is above sea level... it is very unfortunate that it flooded but don't give me a lot of shit about the government or anyone else owes those people.
You don't go build a house (slab) on grade that is a living swamp. Every Spring they have to pump mud underneath their foundations to keep them from sinking.

As being from St.Bernard, NOLA suburb, I koow they are helping people, the question is what have they done with all the donations because they are not reaching us. Early on we got $2000 FEMA and red cross. I was greatful because I lost everything, even my wife's purse with all they money, ID's.. Thats it!

I'm worried about the big picture. After surviving Katrina, seeing how officials treat good people, in respond to disaster, like we were leapers in a leper colony, or like the movie the siege. They really don't have a clue as to what there doing, and the foresight to see how it effects things down the road, i.e. Iraq. I hope they don't have an outbreak of some kind, or tsunami, because we all will eat, what I have only tasted.
