One of the greatest cooking teams ever. They argued (nicely) about msotly everything, but they respected each other. And you always learned. I thank them for teaching me the simple beauty of leek and potato soup. RIP Julia, too bad that bitch Julie Powell will always be linked to you.
The best moment of this series is towards the end of the episode where they made picnic sandwiches and Jacques asked what wine Julia would like......and Julia replies: I LIKE BEER!!!!
and Jacques asks where his wine was, and Julia told him that they would be drinking beer. Classic!!!!
If you Google Julia Child videos, someone's uploaded "Jacques and Julia: Cooking in Concert"
It's a must watch for any fan. Bless Jacques keeping his sense of humour through the whole thing, Julia made it seem as though he couldn't do anything right for the whole hour and twenty minutes, lol. Despite that, how much they really respected and admired each other seems to translate better in that video in comparison to the confines of their television show.
I don't work for ALaCarteTV, but I can say that any serious home cook MUST have this series. Its truly a cooking course in itself. I have it on VHS when it first came out...now ready to upgrade to DVDs
I agree with Julia on the cooking the flour and the spinache: Spinache braised for 10-15 minutes tastes SOOOO much better, even if using frozen. As for the chicken fat, I agree there too. I'm going to die anyway, might as well have something good to eat while I'm waiting~.
i grew up watching these two, thanks to my mom. i used to get mad that i couldnt watch cartoons on saturday but now i appreciate my mom for keeping shows like this on.
They are so cute together! I forgot how much fun it was to listen to Julia Child's little side comments while she was cooking. You can tell Jacques Pepin respects her and likes her, she must be driving him a little bit crazy but he's so nice about it!
How fun is the exchange between them about the spinich!! I agree that pan cooked is a bit bitter, but he has a point about it being healthier. She never lets up on him about technique and he is such a gentleman about it all. I grew up channel surfing past her as a kid but loved the movie!
Ever since I saw the movie I have been enchanted by Julia Child! I know my Mother watched her show when I was a little girl and I saw a few shows when I was older (reruns) but now i want to get her cookbook and try some french recipes. I am reading her book "My life in France" and it's great. She lived a fascinating life!
After I watch the TV shows and now the movie I make a beeline to the kitchen and start chopping onions...and what happens? I cook ! What an inspiration these two are, and always will be... Thanks to them both for inspiring so many to follow in their path not only professionally but in countless homes across the country. Thank you Julia, Thank you Jaques.
I bet it was Jacques. And even if the machine beat him, the machine didn't know it was on the same show as Julia Child! So, M. Pepin wins in any case, hehe.
Such a great show, with two great chefs jokingly jabbing at each other, in addition to such wonderful food they make.
I always found it weird that Julia insists on blanching spinach and then squeezing the water out before sauteeing. I find that just sauteeing works quite well, especially if you have very good quality spinach. I see that Jacques Pepin also agrees.
Julia child on mashed potatoes: "The thing about mashed potatoes is that you could put as little butter or as much butter as you want. And for those who are afraid of butter, as many people are nowadays, I just use cream."
Such a great combination - thanks for sharing this old clip with us. Julia was such a TV maverick, and this is introducing her to a new generation of chefs. And Jacques, well, he's just awesome.
