and yet the oscar ballots have COME...and need to GO by monday..and NO SCREENERS. it's tragique that this terrific looking project gets a nomination, but we haven't seen a screener or even an opportunity to see a screening in L.A. just sad is all
As for those who say it is ''bad'', stick to Disney or to the ''super mutant, extra powerful, monster-like penguin with psychic powers and tentacles sticking out of his arse who loves licking the toes of seven breasted blue skinned girls'' anime genre, and don’t bother.
When I saw the nominations I was like how the hell did they mistranslate "monster" as "cat?!" I didn't realize there were two french animated feature films this year called "A _____ in Paris."
Fantastic. Fantastique. I would love to see this and the other animations and short films nominated for an Oscar. I get so tired of the blockbusters, and think there is much more art, heart, and craft here.
Our love of Paris and Cats brought us to Burbank to see the film during its Qualifying Run. It is a bountiful film evoking a French Noir Animation feel the score is American Jazz and transports the viewer to a simpler era were animation flowed from an artist's veins.
@Thunderworks FINALLY, right? :P I honestly don't watch the Oscars as much as BAFTAs, but because they're so popular, I practically have no choice but to at least be aware of them and the nominees.
And my biggest complaint about them is their lack of non-American films. One little category for foreign films? That's...really pompous and pathetic.
This shit gets nominated and CArs 2 doesn't? What a terrible nomination process the Oscars must have. Of course, the fact that Harry Potter isn't nominated for Best Picture shows that once again, the Oscars are a huge failure. Ditto the fact that so many actresses from The Help were nominated for awards, and Emma Stone is not among them.
@kipolem53 They could have dropped Puss in Boots and had Cars 2. I wouldn't call this film stuff off a shovel. It may not be 3D but given the stuff coming out of Holywood $tudios I'd sooner see something with story and heart. The style may be unusal but it looks fun to me. I'll look out for it on DVD or tv.
@kipolem53 'Cars 2'? I was actually thinking something more like 'Arthur Christmas' or 'Adventures of Tintin'. I was taking "bathroom breaks" (sure, let's call them that) during 'Cars 2'. My kids asked me afterwards, "Why'd you keep leaving us?"
But I will say that I was more surprised to see 'Puss in Boots' up there. These are at least unique animated films, which the Oscars are not good at acknowledging - if it's not Pixar, it's some other CG animated film. It gets a little redundant.

@YummYumYumY It's just a form of drawing. Compare it to Anime if you like. Or what Disney did before Pixar. It's not bullshit, it's just a form of drawing...

I've never understood the tendency to change film titles in translation. The French title clearly translates as "A Cat's Life" so why call it "A Cat in Paris" in translation? Do they think a non-French audience won't understand it's set in France without that in the title?
@lishkoburger12 Hehe, same here. I wanted to see "HEY, what on earth replaced 'Adventures of Tintin'?!" Thankfully it's two things the Oscars so RARELY acknowledge: a non-American film and something that's not Pixar. So all's well. :P
I'm actually surprised this wasn't up for a BAFTA. Mind you I'm much happier with their nominees for that animation category than I am for that of the Oscars, but this looks very good, and the fact that the BAFTAs do a much better job of recognizing films from around the world...I would think that they'd acknowledge this.
Ah well. As long as they left room for 'Tintin', I'm happy. ;)
@Divers1990: I agree with you, lately the animated movies are crap, nothing original, they just change the looks of the characters and the story just a bit, and Voilà !
The ONLY good, even very good animated movie of the last years was Rango, the characters are complex, more "real" than any other I've seen lately (unlike the typical dreamworks/pixar always politically correct lame characters, the heroes aren't clichés).
I highly recommend it to anyone bored by all the animated crap lately.
Puss in Boots now has some award show competition for the animated category!
I haven't seen a single new animated film this year, what with Cars 2 being obvious garbage, but I will want to see The Adventures of Tintin, maybe Puss in Boots, and maybe this.
I do hope that this year is a good year for theatrical animated movies, even with a dud on Pixar's side. the whole world will have to pitch in. This film looks just like classic French cartoon snootyness Aw haw haw! Snooty laughter!
@Divers1990 yeah, I'm pulling for this movie too.. forget Puss in Boots :p... *dodges rocks*.. though I hear Kung Fu Panda 2 is the best movie so Far.. though I like Rango and the Arthur Christmas movie..
