I do remember that we had a blast making it. We were very lucky to be art/photography students in Santa Barbara during a more innocent time. Unfortunately, I was more like Jeff Spicolli than Ray Harryhausen

That's pretty funny now, but we thought he was going to kill us at the time. Kong was then covered with some hair from an old wig. The armature was so bad (sorry, Ernie) we couldn't make him walk, so he's fairly immobile throughout. We used a bit of rear projection for the jungle shots and got an "A" on the project.

As I recall, the film quality looked pretty damn good in 16mm, but this transfer is obviously quite bad. Ah.....those old college days. It was Animal House" for budding filmmakers.

I had an old gorilla armature made by Ernie Farino many years before (I had no concept of armature design or machining at the time) and I quickly sculpted, molded, and foam injected the puppet. For some stupid reason, I remember using a can of black spray paint to hammer open the mold (remember, I probably wasn't thinking too clearly at the time) and it exploded all over me and our Elvis-type buddy's shiny new motorcycle.

I guess my buddy from college must have had a copy of this because I haven't seen it in 30 years. I was hoping it was lost to the ages but I guess everything eventually ends up on youtube. How embarassing.

We shot this as an assignment while were at Brook Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. We had very little time to do this, and in-between surfing, partying, chasing girls, getting high and chugging margueritas, we managed to crank out this little tribute to Kong.
