Not saying that Michelle caused Heath's death of course. Gilliam said Heath turned out that way because of the breakup with Michelle and then he was not spending much time with Matilda, etc, etc. It was Heath's addiction to the prescription medication and the accidental misuse of them that did him in. Heath and Michelle really loved each other and had good times and bad times. She did try to help him when he was in trouble and it devestated her when he died even though they had broken up.

I remember reading an article somewhere in a magazine and there was a qoute by Terry Gilliam who directed Heath in the Imagination of Dr. Parsnus, the last movie Heath had made, not yet released. He talked about working with Heath and about Heath's passing but did not talk about Michelle in a favorable light. Now, i am not sure if this is exactly what he said but from what I remember the man was saying that Michelle was indirectly responsible for Heath's death.
