The strange title [GELS] is explained on the special edition DVD in a documentary. Originally, the humans were going to have devolved into literally GIANT GREEN BLOBS OF JELLO! To keep with the silent theme, their words would be unintelligable, due to being made of jello, and having 700 years of language progression. I think that idea would've been funny, but also more "what-if" than realistic.
