@RebelRadius : yet if you have no regulations... it's just the jungle, that's not a market either.
Actually, markets require regulation... e.g. the beef and grain commodity markets... you can only sell futures if you regulate the definition of the quality grade you are buying in advance.
So actually you can only have ANY KIND of market with regulation... if that can't be free, give up on markets.
In reality, regulating one thing creates a freedom for another.
Capitalism means men are free to trade and as Ayn Rand said "they must be free to agree or disagree, to cooperate or to pursue their own independent course, each according to his own rational judgment. Freedom is the fundamental requirement of man’s mind"
A regulator decides where, what and whom can trade. A regulator is the slave master and regulations are ropes of bondage.
@RebelRadius : hardly... a regulator is the one that defines what AAA grade beef is so you can sell beef futures.
you're view of rule systems is simplistic. Without system-rules there is no system. As if animals in the state of nature are part of a "market"... ridiculous. Think it through a bit please.
@RebelRadius :excuse me but thing this through. I want to buy 100 lb AAA beef that hasn't been created yet... a person has to promise that the beef they provide in the future (I've bought in advance to fix the price) is of a certain quality. There has to be a common definiton ONE way or ANOTHER. period.

four examples of tanks forcing a so called "free market principle". chile, china, iraq, and russia. mrs. klein makes the point in her book that there is nothing natural about right wing capitalism. it has to be administered thru deception and force.
what's ironic, is it's now happening to an unsuspecting american public, while the rest of the world is wise to it.
Take a look at any collectivist society are they doing well? How about the Eurpean Union? Indian reservations? Africa? Venezula? I travel the world and the ones that are the poorest are the ones where the government has the most control. The societies where people have the vote wheather it be through the dollar or ballot. Capitalism gave you the industrial revolution and even gave you Youtube so you could bitch about things you have no idea about. You guys mistake corporatism for capitalism.
@eathis12 But the problem is that what we have now is corporatism and not capitalism (which would imply some level of market distribution of capital plus business development) and we certainly don't have anything near a free market system with corporations sitting on 2 trillion in profits and not hiring and outsourcing jobs. As for those societies you're referring to venezuela still has growth that far exceeds ours and universal health care. Better check which window you're looking out.

If you compared a king from a thousand years ago to me today the King has a pretty shitty life. I have two cars in my garage, he has no cars. I have electricity and running water, he does not. I can stuff myself with as much food as he can. I have better healthcare than any thousand year old king. I was not born into wealth, I worked for it.
My royal standard of living is possible, not because of government intervention, but because I can keep the money I earn and spend it how I desire. I can choose between dozens of products from companies that compete for my business. Because I have the right to shop around I can get products of the highest possible quality at the lowest possible price. I buy from any country in the world. I dont think William the Conqueror could do that.
You missed the point of my argument. My point was that people dont become rich by stealing from the poor. People get rich by creating new wealth. New Wealth is created with new inventions, new factories, and new ideas. Men like Henry Ford for example, before Ford cars were more expensive than houses. He used mass production to give everyone cars.
the hatred for the poor and socialism is why free markets flourish. people can't see that. Ayn Rand started this whole thing. hate the poor so the corporations will profit, NOT YOU.
but without any regulations the poor can be even quicker out of jobs that they got them. When pressing the governments to "make labour market flexible" doesn't prove succesful they can always close the business transfer all the money and sack the people.
So you think employers should be regulated to keep working so that the poor have jobs? You do realize that coerced labor equals slavery?
It's their business, their profits, their property, why shouldn't they be allowed to own it, for a change?
And your idea does not hold in reality. See Ireland that was poor until the 90s and now has a rich, thriving free market economy that, guess what, allows FULL repatriation of profits.
That attracts wealth and economic development, not the opposite.
Just to clear up an ongoing debate: the socialist approach socialized everything, land, labor and capital and because labor and capital earn their rewards not allowing them to get or keep their reward was bound to fail in time. It was correct to socialize land since land, the earth, belongs to all and its value is created 100% by the whole community. They had it right in # 1 of the 10 recommendations of the Communist Manifesto but went wrong starting with #2, the progressive income tax.
This women lives in the cradle of capitalism. condescending cunt, why doesn't she go to Zimbabwe and preach the benefits of her workers movement there.
Don't you know that China was a great place to live before Milton Friedman's 'shock therapy' came along and destroyed the Glorious Worker's Paradise of Mao's Cultural Revolution????
Yeah, I guess after you take the, what was the official number? 20 million, 30 million died from starvation when this little project hit a "feed bump". Very nice country for the people, I like the part where they charge your family for the bullet when you are deemed "enemy of the state". Very good country if you like wasting away in your little black jacket.
Take it easy Comrade, Lots of freedom fighters are allergic to cats.I know that there are a few small details to be worked out for the next experiment. I am sure you will get it right with perhaps maybe a few less million dead, but if it is a few million more, if the end justify the means then by all means go ahead. As for China, the paradise will have to wait, they are enjoying computers, cars, and all those trappings of evil capitalism.
Comrade, my first edict as Chairman of the Proletariat will be to ban cute, snuggly kittens, as a symbol of the antiquated bourgeois masterminds of the terrible capitalist system.
I think this time around we can achieve paradise with only ten million dead!
Remember you are making an omelet, so just wing it if you get stumped.
Will you do as the great Canadian Minister of the Environment and purchase ( on the workers dime of course ) just one hummer instead of his two to show solidarity for the kyyodel movement .
The great American comrade, Leonordi (the guy from the titanic movie ) just issued a dvd on global warming and our dependence on fossil fuels, flying from city to city in his private jet to unite comrades to kyodel together.
Those 10 million in your budget to utopia for the slackers movement, could be called enemies of the environment and could earn you a Nobel nomination. At the least a book deal, and potential made for propaganda movie of the weak.
Zimbabwe is not capitalist. It is a feudal economy. Capitalism requires rule of law, free markets, limited government, property rights, enforcement of contracts, and a banking system. Zimbabwe has none of those.
Listen people I truly understand your frustration with the way things are. However blaming something that is yet to exist will not solve your problem. The future free market is a vision, dream, hypothetical. We currently have a political economy. The current economy is full of loopholes, subsides, excessive taxation, redistribution and regulation. The real myth is labeling what we have a free market capitalistic economy. We The People must create the free market economy!
If you bother to read Ms Klein's book (p.187) you will find that the western media interpretation is the total lie. The Chinese "New Left" is against capitalist development. The leading figure is Wang Hui whose book "China's New Order states that the demonstrations in TS were against the free market reforms that were eroding the socialist core. Find out the truth or live with your illusions and vomit away.
You are probably right. However, the demonstrators demanded civil liberties + a socialist economy, NOT a free market economy. You seem to equate the free market with democracy, which in the thrust of Ms Klein's book shows that democracy is inimicable to "disaster" capitalism.
"Gorbachev tried to bring in a new type of Socialism" ? LOL - You know you're a liberal if you believe the only reason Socialism hasn't worked is because the right people haven't been in charge.
You were "LOL" so much you missed the point. Scandinavian social democracy, "socialism with a human face" (Dubcek in Czechoslovakia, 1968) - which became "socialism with broken teeth" after the Soviets crush the reform programme.
The point was that Gorbachev wanted Scandinavian or reform socialism. Swedes, the happiest? I live in Stockholm and if Swedes are happy, then they keep it well hidden. "Capitalism in its present form of a bureaucratic, centralised system tends to make man more alienated, to cripple him, and not only the worker but the whole population" (Erich Fromm, 1969) - basically, what Oliver James calls "affluenza". Are you happy? It depends on conceptions and character. Sweden--more compulsive neuroses.
1969 is so far away that it belongs to a totally different era! As far as happyness is concerned, I don't know about Sweden (but it didn't seem so dull when I visited it and a friend of mine just got back from a Sweden tour and loved it!), but Finland and Norway are always at the top of pan-European polls!
Your friends are tourists. 1969 - in terms of capitalist development 39 years is no time. In terms of capitalist exploitation and alienation it is today. Fromm in 1955! spoke of the "homo consumer" - "a person's status in a society is largely based upon his purchasing power, thus the marketing character believes that personal identity and status are derived and determined more by the conspicuous possessions that one owns, than by intrinsic characteristics."
I think you are beautiful and sexual, and when I hear you speak, I am amazed that I am attracted by a woman with so much knowledge.
I consider you my number one woman on world affairs. And if you think you don't rate that high, I admit, a bit of your score is from your physical attraction.
I love your looks,
I support your causes,
And I appreciate your involvement in world affairs.
Government versus corporations... hmmh -- time to choose more balance IMO. Without a government there is no possibility for stable Democracy. Basically government without Democracy is Fascism. And Democracy without government is anarchy. Neither alternative seems very desirable to me.
Neoconsuck: Your name says it all - Neoconservatives are not Demos or Repubs - they are a philosophical society that can trace their roots to their founder, "Kristol" whose "mentor" was Trotsky - Trotsky was a died in wool Communist - Neoconservatives are NOT FOR FREE-MARKETS, LIBERTY, OR CONSERVATISM. Ron Paul is the only "sane" politician and the the only Constitutional one! RP 2008
How can the person holding the kid, or the person right next to them, hear Naomi? I'm not against ppl. going out with their infants, but I am wondering why I would stay when I wouldn't be able to hear N. anyway. Being able to focus doesn't give the person next to you super hearing powers.
BeanGene--THANK YOU. It's as plain as day......I can't see how anyone cannot understand this and SEEEEE that it is indeed taking place now and highly set up. Thank you for gracefully saying what I was thinking. I just discovered her and her writings. But called my representative (LOL) a while back and told his assistant, "it is possible to have capitalism without democracy, you know," and I was referring to our President illegally wiretapping and spying on citizens.
It like a world conspiracy to create this new feudal order with corporate lords everywhere.

Economic Shock Therapy is the brain child of Jeffery Sachs of Harvard which is hardly the bastion of the far right extremists as she paints them out to be.
With this in mind why did she willingly omit such a common knowledge fact? She is either severely uninformed or accepting information that conforms to her world view and rejecting all others in a word this is propaganda.
"Shock Treatment" was used in the mid 1970s and comes from Milton Friedman, and not Jeffrey Sachs (born 1954), who at this time was still an undergrad.
Do you expect her to regurgitate a 450 page book in an hour? Go and read the book and you will find plenty of stuff on Sachs and his shock therapy in Bolivia and Poland
Good point. Actually I haven't read F. or S., but I have read much Hayek-Road to Serfdom/Individual liberty. I was unfortunate enough to come of age in the UK during the Thatcher era - Falklands and NUM strike affected me deeply and many people were oblivious of the implications. It wasn't a strike bust, it was a class war. So I became a student of this new right ideology.
Why would you give a damn about the sons and daughters of ex-miners in South Wales/Derbyshire etc? Only to justify the barbarity of "your" gurus, or to claim vindication. You freemarketeers are nutters-just like the Leninists, both reify abstract mechanisms as being natural - you put profit & "natural" market mechanisms about human needs, Leninists put inevitable historical destiny about human life. Both crypto-fascism!
Propaganda [from modern Latin: 'propaganda', literally "propagating"] is a concerted set of messages aimed at influencing the opinions or behavior of large numbers of people. Instead of impartially providing information, propaganda in its most basic sense presents information in order to influence its audience
The most effective propaganda is often completely truthful, but some propaganda presents facts selectively to encourage a particular synthesis, or gives loaded messages in order to produce an emotional rather than rational response to the information presented. The desired result is a change of the cognitive narrative of the subject in the target audience.
she uses the word DEMOCRACY too much, the united states is a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC not a democracy.. don't believe me say your pledge of elegance ..and to the republic for which it stands .. btw "one nation under god" was added later to justify its possible exclusion from swearing it in public schools!
Rediculious to think a big brother government can be anything but corrupt. You socialist fools - it is a dream. Monopolization by government or by corporate produces the same oppression, have common sense. Read Milton Freedman, fact check this twisted rubbish, how many times must this Maxist system fail before we realize it only ends in greed and murder. Destroy the United Nations and the central bank.
And feudalism has always prevailed!!! You've resorted to the weakest argumentative form of name calling, used by those in a corner. Also, misspelling in your fight response to truth..
To many who have watched the transition from socialism to fascism at close quarters the connection between the two systems has become increasingly obvious, but in the democracies the majority of people still believe that socialism and freedom can be combined. They do not realize that democratic socialism, the great utopia of the last few generations, is not only unachievable but that to strive for it produces something utterly different - the very destruction of freedom itself.
Great stuff. To those who like this lecture I would also recommend the work of David Harvey on this subject, especially his most recent book, "A Brief History of Neoliberalism." There some lectures of his floating around on youtube as well.
Bankers rule the world BECAUSE we let them create money. With out monitary reform there is no revolution,. . (see video 'money AS debt') Given unlimited funding the Neo-Cons will continue to impose their agenda. "Thinktanks = the people that are paid to think, by the makers of tanks." nice one,. soon to b on a t-shirt!
The minister of Education in Ontario's most radical (Michael Harris)Conservative government, Min. John C Snobelen was inadvertently removed from his educational portfolio after he let it slip out that he believed that the only way to bring about educational reform in Ontario was to destroy the present system and rebuild it from the bottom up.
This sounds like the Milton Friedman philosophy to me.
Fantastic oneliner there Naomi "Think tanks are places where people are paid to think by makers of tanks", it is so very true!

It was correct to socialize land since land, the earth, belongs to all and its value is created 100% by the whole community. They had it right in # 1 of the 10 recommendations of the Communist Manifesto but went wrong starting with #2, the progressive income tax.

How dare you???
Don't you know that China was a great place to live before Milton Friedman's 'shock therapy' came along and destroyed the Glorious Worker's Paradise of Mao's Cultural Revolution????
Everybody already know this!
slavophile1 3 years ago
Yeah, I guess after you take the, what was the official number? 20 million, 30 million died from starvation when this little project hit a "feed bump". Very nice country for the people, I like the part where they charge your family for the bullet when you are deemed "enemy of the state". Very good country if you like wasting away in your little black jacket.
moviedude111 3 years ago
You unenlightened sod! 20-30 million dead is just a statistic.
The Proles were fighting against the 'shock therapy' of the man with the cat in his lap, Milton Friedman!
Mao was bringing paradise to China when the evil masterminds in the Chicago University came along and ruined everything!!!
slavophile1 3 years ago
Take it easy Comrade, Lots of freedom fighters are allergic to cats.I know that there are a few small details to be worked out for the next experiment. I am sure you will get it right with perhaps maybe a few less million dead, but if it is a few million more, if the end justify the means then by all means go ahead. As for China, the paradise will have to wait, they are enjoying computers, cars, and all those trappings of evil capitalism.
moviedude111 3 years ago
Comrade, my first edict as Chairman of the Proletariat will be to ban cute, snuggly kittens, as a symbol of the antiquated bourgeois masterminds of the terrible capitalist system.
I think this time around we can achieve paradise with only ten million dead!
Am I not merciful?

I really want to vomit that she is taking talking points from "China's" new Left about T. Square. It is a total lie.
They protested Communism, end of story.
Advocate1234 4 years ago
If you bother to read Ms Klein's book (p.187) you will find that the western media interpretation is the total lie. The Chinese "New Left" is against capitalist development. The leading figure is Wang Hui whose book "China's New Order states that the demonstrations in TS were against the free market reforms that were eroding the socialist core. Find out the truth or live with your illusions and vomit away.
sbor2020 4 years ago
I read Klein's book. The entire section on T square was almost devoid of citations.
The truth is that 99% of the protesters thought the new economic freedom that they obtained would lead to free speech rights and other freedoms.
Advocate1234 4 years ago
You are probably right. However, the demonstrators demanded civil liberties + a socialist economy, NOT a free market economy. You seem to equate the free market with democracy, which in the thrust of Ms Klein's book shows that democracy is inimicable to "disaster" capitalism.

"Gorbachev tried to bring in a new type of Socialism" ? LOL - You know you're a liberal if you believe the only reason Socialism hasn't worked is because the right people haven't been in charge.
jbryant13 4 years ago
You were "LOL" so much you missed the point. Scandinavian social democracy, "socialism with a human face" (Dubcek in Czechoslovakia, 1968) - which became "socialism with broken teeth" after the Soviets crush the reform programme.
sbor2020 4 years ago
Actually Scandinavian countries are the wealthiest (and happiest, polls tell) in Europe, at the moment!
ekleptical 4 years ago
The point was that Gorbachev wanted Scandinavian or reform socialism. Swedes, the happiest? I live in Stockholm and if Swedes are happy, then they keep it well hidden. "Capitalism in its present form of a bureaucratic, centralised system tends to make man more alienated, to cripple him, and not only the worker but the whole population" (Erich Fromm, 1969) - basically, what Oliver James calls "affluenza". Are you happy? It depends on conceptions and character. Sweden--more compulsive neuroses.
sbor2020 4 years ago
1969 is so far away that it belongs to a totally different era! As far as happyness is concerned, I don't know about Sweden (but it didn't seem so dull when I visited it and a friend of mine just got back from a Sweden tour and loved it!), but Finland and Norway are always at the top of pan-European polls!
ekleptical 4 years ago
Your friends are tourists. 1969 - in terms of capitalist development 39 years is no time. In terms of capitalist exploitation and alienation it is today. Fromm in 1955! spoke of the "homo consumer" - "a person's status in a society is largely based upon his purchasing power, thus the marketing character believes that personal identity and status are derived and determined more by the conspicuous possessions that one owns, than by intrinsic characteristics."

Economic Shock Therapy is the brain child of Jeffery Sachs of Harvard which is hardly the bastion of the far right extremists as she paints them out to be.
With this in mind why did she willingly omit such a common knowledge fact? She is either severely uninformed or accepting information that conforms to her world view and rejecting all others in a word this is propaganda.
davidmesaaz 4 years ago
"Shock Treatment" was used in the mid 1970s and comes from Milton Friedman, and not Jeffrey Sachs (born 1954), who at this time was still an undergrad.
SocialDemocrats 4 years ago 4
Do you expect her to regurgitate a 450 page book in an hour? Go and read the book and you will find plenty of stuff on Sachs and his shock therapy in Bolivia and Poland
sbor2020 4 years ago
I have read her book. Have you read the works of Milton Friedman or Jeff Sachs?
davidmesaaz 4 years ago
So I became a student of this new right ideology.
sbor2020 4 years ago
Its class warfare huh Thatcher is evil huh?
Well tell that to the sons of coal workers who are now going to the University instead of spending their life in a mine.
davidmesaaz 4 years ago
Why would you give a damn about the sons and daughters of ex-miners in South Wales/Derbyshire etc? Only to justify the barbarity of "your" gurus, or to claim vindication. You freemarketeers are nutters-just like the Leninists, both reify abstract mechanisms as being natural - you put profit & "natural" market mechanisms about human needs, Leninists put inevitable historical destiny about human life. Both crypto-fascism!
sbor2020 4 years ago 2
Propaganda [from modern Latin: 'propaganda', literally "propagating"] is a concerted set of messages aimed at influencing the opinions or behavior of large numbers of people. Instead of impartially providing information, propaganda in its most basic sense presents information in order to influence its audience
davidmesaaz 4 years ago
The most effective propaganda is often completely truthful, but some propaganda presents facts selectively to encourage a particular synthesis, or gives loaded messages in order to produce an emotional rather than rational response to the information presented. The desired result is a change of the cognitive narrative of the subject in the target audience.
davidmesaaz 4 years ago
she uses the word DEMOCRACY too much, the united states is a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC not a democracy.. don't believe me say your pledge of elegance ..and to the republic for which it stands .. btw "one nation under god" was added later to justify its possible exclusion from swearing it in public schools!

Rediculious to think a big brother government can be anything but corrupt. You socialist fools - it is a dream. Monopolization by government or by corporate produces the same oppression, have common sense.
BeanGene 4 years ago
Corporation is a new element.
Capitalism can no longer function in "freedom" with this element in the mix.
Democracy can function.
Socialism can function.
Capitalism achieves the total control you fear without government by "owning" your water and food and job.
Democracy provides recourse when the government overreaches.
Corporations are inherrantly Totalitarian/Authoritarian.
If you've worked for one you'll know this to be true.
