It has been mentioned that this has been performed a semitone lower (half step) but he sings a Top C! so it is in the original key of Db Major. Bravo Shicoff!

My God he is terrific here, as fine or finer then anyone who ever sang this role. 1984! He is 34 years old here and I was at this show, it brought the house down.
I like this performance from 1984 perhaps even more then the great 1982 London performance that was and is available on DVD and on you tube with this aria. I will never forget this performance and the fine Mimi, quite a fine Mimi and Rudolfo.
i wouldn't know since i don't have any classes with him. i didn't even KNOW his father was an opera singer (let alone one so famous) until he came in on thursday to talk to everyone. he was just going to talk to the ninth graders about romeo & juliet i think but then it became this big thing. he was so funny and modest....he and his son look a lot alike too. its weird the people you meet when you live overseas.
The problem with that was he got into some trouble singing like Corelli in the mid 80's and was singing to heavy with his basic lyric so he worked and cured it and in the 90's was really great. I was at this show as I said and he was magnificent. He acted it out and in that last seen was really the character.
I was at this performance and the lady next to me by the time he was done with the first act was in tears and at the end she said he was the greatest in the role she ever heard and she must have been close to 90, it was a great show. He sings here in his prime.
No Alagna was not even close in the house, Neil had a much larger voice he did very well in Don Carlo as we know. He also lasted and still sings but when Alagna started with heavier roles he had trouble.
He was so good in the acting of the role at the end when he was laying on the bed with her and singing "Mim "Mimi" people at the met where actually crying, I looked around and noticed grown men crying it was very moving and I will never forget that day at the opera. Bravo and thanks.
Listen to him sing at 1:50 on the word "VUOLE" the note is beautiful and only Pav. also does it that way. Neil brought the house down that afternoon. I heard him do Boheme here in 1979 with Leonie Mitchell, remember her in the pav. Movie? (yes Giorgio) They both made debuts olso a Ramey debut(coline) in that Boheme in Chicago and Neil's high B was loaded with Squillo but this shows him in his prime with a hint of Lanza in the voice and yet a fine performance, great lyric tenor in our time.
He studied with Corelli in the mid 80's but it got him into trouble with his basically lyric voice but he fixed the problem and went on great as before. His favorite 3 tenors he has said many times are Bjorling, Corelli and Tucker-- all for different reasons. I was at this show and afterwards he signed my opera new which had him on the cover that month---1/84
I never stated that he did, I think they sound similar at points in the aria. Of course Shicoff's is better, more dynamic variation, more pleasant timbre and better technique.

Purists may whine about it being sung down a half step but that hardly matters. It is a wonderful performance.

Veramente bella voce e un bel gusto musicale, peccato che è stato un po dimenticato Neil Shicoff .

Shicoff was a sensational Romeo...one of his best roles. He was the best tenor in the US and possibly the world in the 1980s. Where do you live?

I think Shicoff's son goes to school in Vienna.

his son, alex, is a tenth grader at my school and neil came in to talk to all of us today :]

Wow, that's awesome. Does his son sing well?

I just realized by accident that Shicoff did study with Corelli, which may explain some similarity in sound/phrasing.

Not only a beautiful lyric voice, but a superlative dramatic interpreter of the character. Bravo Shicoff.

I very much hope you got my very late note.

Very nice, thanks- GermanOS, I have a question- does he use the same technique Corelli used? The sort of robust phrasing on
"con due parole" and other parts strongly reminded me of Corelli- just curious.

Alagna had a similar sound on the top before he started destroying his voice.
Very nice singing. I like this tenor. :)

Yah I agree; I was absent-mindedly listening to this again today, and when I heard the first two lines, I thought I was listening to a young Alagna!

Wow, when I listen for the similarities, they are certainly there! Very similar to the young Alagna.
