I was born in warsaw but at this time I was 14 years old and I had no idea about such crazy events - truly regret that I didnt see that LIVE but after many years on YOUTUBE
This is so inspiring, Azar is STILL one of the coolest artists I've ever had the privilege to know and perform with! None other than McCoy! Thanks so much!
Oh yeah, that's right: cut out right when we get to the Bass solo - always the way! Probably woulda started talking anyway even if the clip had kept on going.
Saw this band at the Bastille in Houston. My first jazz show, and still one of my favorite memories. Azar was great, and the intensity of McCoy's percussive piano playing was a revelation.
Azar Lawrence is the tenor saxophonist, who was in his 20's at the time of the performance.
He's been away from the scene for many years, but has started to record again within the last year or two. I missed him during his abscence.
He took a lot of heat for being a Coltrane clone when he played for McCoy. I thought that was ridiculous because re had his own tenor and soprano sound and his own impulse when he soloed.
