how slow were the aussie pitches? they do not seem to have any bounce. watch the richards pull all played below the shoulder to very short deliveries.
watch his 135 against england at old trafford. in my view his best innings. watch his cut shots especially watch his judgement of length, he is already in position a split of a moment before the ball arrives, thats absolutely incredible. and that was in no way pre meditated.
in my view batsman like fast bowlers peak right in their firs two years watch lara's 277- his fist century or tendulkars first four years. his most superb batting days. or even lesser players. all peak in the first two yea
Never get tired of watching the great man bat. It takes a hell of a good bowler to get Viv out when he's in that mood on a good pitch, and only truly great bowlers like Lillee could do that.
Thanks for this.. Been looking for this for a long time.. Any idea where to get the Packer series matches & Super tests? Heard they are not even available in AUstralia?
Other things of note: Haynes (his partner in this innings) was a rookie, whose first test ton cam on the windies onward tour to NZ). Greenidge had 4 or 5 of his eventual 19 test tons, and when Richards went, Haynes followed and then the windies were 4-126. Enter Clive Lloyd who scored 121 (94 between tea and stumps) to remind some pundits of his 75 wc final - if anyone has footage of that (his 121 in this test) please upload it....
In that 79-80 series Viv Richards at age 27 was at the peak of his powers. six months earlier he had scored a majestic unbeaten 138 in the world cup final against england. In this series in aust - the firest time the windies beat us on our own soil. His scores were 140 off 259 in bris, 96(110) in melb and 76(72) & 74(105) in adelaide for a grand total of 386 at 96.5! Very similar performance to SRT when we lost 2-1 in India when the maestro scored 447 at 111.75 in 3 tests!
to get Richards to square up like that in 1980 is just great - lillee was great (even if it as the 1st over). Having said that the ball that got Richards , i suspect, was due to Richards trying to get Lilllie back. either way great players - maybe the greatest,.
They would not shit themselves, because speed alone isn't enough to scare top-class batsmen. That doesn't mean those two would take any less wickets though - they were both superb. They took their scalps by mixing up their deliveries and thinking about what they were doing, unlike some of today's bowlers who just try for line and length.
Two f*cking great players. After all the freakish Windies fast bowlers, Viv rates Lillee as number two of all of them, behind only Malcolm Marshall. I don't see it coz Garner, Roberts and Ambrose etc must surely be ahead of Lillee, but then who am i to question the master blaster who either faced them and played along side most.
yeh great player he once said that lillee is the greatest bowler he ever faced and marshall was the greatest fast bowler from the west indies. personally for me its lillee and marshall as the greatest fast bowlers of all time. lots of the crickert pundits say lilee is 0ne and marshall is two. but i think its very close call as i`m a marshall fan,
Marshall died real young too - early 40s. I liked the way he sprinted through the crease without slowing down to gather for the delivery; just about the best action, his arm whizzing around so fast.
yeh he was 41 years old. died of colon cancer. really nice person to chat too very humble i met him years ago it was nice that he actually approached me spoke to anyone. with regards to his bowling denniss lilee once adviced him about his running into the wicket to bowl needed to be running in fast rather than slow because of his height. nice that one great fast bowler can give advice to another great fast bowler.
lol so australia is your team. they`re in a bit of a rebuilding phase at the moment since the retirement of warne magrath gilchrist. they a good side anyway

aussie pitches look little faster than sub continent pitches of today.

dennis lillee was just 5'11 cmon thats not a fast bowlers height.

All of Viv's runs were scored wearing a baggy cap. The days when umpires wore ties, too.

Just look at that pace attack at 0:55, Roberts, Garner, Holding and Croft
Damn those were the days..

In my opinion greatest ever batsman. 10 sachin + 10 lara can't make one Richards.

That late 70s-early 80s West Indies cricket team must rank as the greatest test team of all time better than the Aussie team of the 90s.

So Lillee is the informant! He's the traitor that caused Marshall to give us so much misery in the early 80s!
Lol no that's great form between fast bowlers and thanks for passing this on.

All i can say is, we're very lucky we don't face what we did last time we were rebuilding in the early mid 80s.
