This lovely Christmas hymn was a normal part of my Christmas when I was a child in Ireland in the 1940s and 1950s and as a n adult in Wales until the 1970s when anything that even sounded like Latin was shown the door.
The Catholic Church has become a little less sacred as a consequence but I still love it dearly...

Too many religious songs are sung to express "reverence," which is taken to mean a draggy pace. The faster pace captures the joy of the song. Why are joyous songs song with such languor?
The "languor" is designed to facilitate meditation and contemplation. Good liturgical music is a form of prayer, after all, and should be presented that way. If you want peppy and cheerful, I'm sure Hannah Montana would be happy to oblige you.
beautiful just so quit and calm to the heart,

@RebelKnightCSA HA HA HA! Well said. I feel the same way about a lot of modern masses - all showmanship; short on contemplation.
