Actually I think it's pretty weak. I mean he can technically "hit" the notes but it's way too nasally. It sounds good on the professional recording but it doesn't have anything close to that resonance in the live performance.

i can't be sure... but during the verse it doesn't look like hes just playing power chords. Its like hes adding some other notes in too . Anyway the guitar in the song is meant to be really low so i guess he would need to use power chords so that the sound doesn't sound too bright

actually he is playing power chords... but its just in drop D tuning. look closely u can see him using only his index to barr so chords. the "other notes" are just notes added to the drop D power chords. extra notes always sound good for drop D tuning, which is an advantage of the tuning =]
