I don't think they're trying to one up their sob stories. You'll notice that their facial expressions and tone are not congruous with the horrific words coming out of their mouth. No real emotion except and eagerness to share their misery. They've compartmentalized their pain. When people have trauma and don't get therapy and then they meet another wounded person they tend to be excited that they've met someone that knows that pain. They're both probably lovely women
