I moved to Columbia MD from Australia. Columbia is one of the nicest parts of the USA, with so many friendly folks willing to welcome us into their lives. I travelled to 27 states whilst working for a local Columbia company, and so I saw a lot of the US foreigners rarely see, like Pittsburgh North in deepest winter. I was always glad to come home. Be glad of what you have - enjoy the burrito whilst you're here.

Have you heard of Potomac or Bethesda md...way more affluent than Columbia all in Mont. county - look it up on Wikipedia, Montgomery county is way more affluent or "rich" as you say...than Howard country.

HoCo is not really the richest county in MD. HoCo is a tiny county compared to MoCo which is technically the richest because its GDP is far superior to HoCo's GDP. Also every major company and all of MD's richest cities like Potomac, Bethesda, and Chevy Chase are all located in MoCo. The only reason HoCo is listed as a wealthier county is because while it is rich, the population is so small compared to MoCo that its population compared to total gross looks very well economically on paper.
My mother did that to people with me when I was a little kid when we went to the movies but that was back in the 80s when people felt safe to trust other people. I live in stuck-up HoCo MD and let me tell you even poor people are stuck up . God can't wait to see the econmey collaps WHICH IT WILL & see all the HoCo people go out of their friggen minds. I work in Bethesda and we have visiting doctors, some of them who decide to stay in the area eventually. I used to recommend Columbia, however not anymore. True the place is clean and organized, but there is no sense of community here. The mall is a joke, it is beginning to look and feel run down. The "quality" of people moving in is also not the same as it was in the 80's. Old families have moved away, it is not that expensive to live in. 10 yrs from becoming another Laurel, MD.

It is really run down. Some of the exits from the mall are downright scary. Kids getting high on weed and right under the noses of Howard County Police and the joke of a mall security they have. Kids also ride their skateboards all over the place. Columbia Mall = Laurel Mall. Really.

Columbia, strange place to grow up. '74 to '89. Mom/Dad still in Clary's Forest. For a black family from MS, Columbia in the '70's it was a trip & a half. The villages, street names, "open classroom" schools. Like being in a club only a few others have experienced. The "oh you must live in Columbia" comment after giving your address. Remember walking the bike paths/playing at the tot lots as a kid? Is it even safe to do that nowadays? Still one of the best places to raise a family...
"Still one of the best places to raise a family..." not as much now a days... the community is slowly falling apart, but you can tell already that there are a lot of signs of gentrification around the area... especially in the Wilde Lake and Long Reach areas.
columbia is a pretty expensive place to live...there are a few cheap apartment complex places like Hannibal Grove now called "The Beskshires"...which is extremely ghetto..if you want to find somewhere close to columbia i would suggest Ellicott City or Elkridge which are 10-15 minutes away.
I live in Rockville and sure it is congested, and we have plenty of problems. However, Columbia is just "Kreepy." I like to hit the Sears and the JCPenney, and Know the place since I was in my teens (grew up in Anne Arundel). Kids around Columbia seem very disrespectful, I guess because it is one of those "let the schools and toys raise our kids" type of place with no REAL sense of community. Let's face it, it is a failed experiment and not a traditional community.

The "boy" doesn't want to do shit for himself; he just want to visit his "becky (white girlfriend) and his girlfriend is doing better than him. So yeah I agree with the whole "let the schools and toys raise our kids" cuz that's all they do in Columbia.

hahah! I love this! I used to live in Columbia Maryland, the stuff people do... Ok i went ice skating one time, some lady left her Coach bag in a locker... with no lock. And when it was gone, she was crying and saying who would be so mean! Oh, and when i was a little girl, my friends mom told a stranger to watch us too!!! I ran back outside and waited with my mom haha... Come out with more movies like this i love it!

You're wrong, howard county is not the richest county in maryland. Montgomery County is the richest county in maryland and one of the richest counties in the US. Montgomery County doesn't even allow Trailer Parks, but Howard County does.

Maryland has the distinction of having the highest median household income($65,144) and the lowest poverty rate in the U.S. Howard County had the highest median household income in Maryland ($94,260) and ranked third among all counties nationally (behind only Fairfax and Loudoun counties).
