The obvious question not asked, as far as I know, is: Is there a law that says we have to pay tax on personal labor? There is not and it is forbiden by the Constitution, it has been forbiden 3X by the Supreme Court between 1916 and 1932, and there are many other decisions by other Federal courts that ruled with the Supreme court. Don't know about US terminology, but in the UK tax is not voluntary - all of is has to be paid, but much is it (primarily payroll taxes) are collected by deduction at source, whereas 'self employment' taxes (where there is no employer to collect them) are paid in instalments, by certain deadlines. I suspect that the IRS are as willing & eager to collect arrears as HMRC are.

The obvious question not asked, as far as I know, is: Is there a law that says we have to pay tax on personal labor? There is not and it is forbiden by the Constitution, it has been forbiden 3X by the Supreme Court between 1916 and 1932, and there are many other decisions by other Federal courts that ruled with the Supreme court. Why does everyone ignore or doesn't know about these rulings by our courts?

Taxes are mandatory and not voluntary. If you refuse you incur heavy fines and/or jail. Taxes provide the government with a neccessary income. The rich are always demonized for being wealthy by the dems. Taxes should be proportionate to the level of income. The individuals with the lesser incomes are always contemptuous of the rich tis nothing new under the sun. If you were rich you would be singing all the way to the bank.

IRS becomes intensely vicious about "owed" taxes. Charging processing fees, late fees, penalties, and interest. A person could have say $200 in the bank. All they owned would be that two hundred, IRS would snatch it in a second. Not caring about the five small children at that person's home who now goes hungry. There are voluntary taxes. They are called lotteries, fees and tolls. Fees and tolls are a pay as you go system for use, while lotteries are just you choosing to waste your money.
Because a government needs a reliablly steady source of revenue to function (level is debateable), the closest we could get to a "voluntary tax" is a national sales tax.

Voluntary to Jan, the dictionary, commonsense or any honest, rational person means not required by law under penalty of fines or imprisonment.

The courts always rule that any tax return filed was filed voluntarily, even in a trial where the defendant is charged criminally and fined or jailed for failing to file one. Lies enforced as truth by the state, define a dark age.

Don't know about US terminology, but in the UK tax is not voluntary - all of is has to be paid, but much is it (primarily payroll taxes) are collected by deduction at source, whereas 'self employment' taxes (where there is no employer to collect them) are paid in instalments, by certain deadlines. I suspect that the IRS are as willing & eager to collect arrears as HMRC are.

@nick987789 Even if that nonsensical standard for voluntary where not full withholding == voluntary (which is innacurate because regardless of whether you pay at withholding or on tax day you are forced to pay or be thrown in jail) were true, Reid would be dead wrong and here's the counterexample. Over the summer I worked at a burger joint and had a few hundred bucks withheld. On tax day it was calculated that the government took too much and I got $ back. So the withholding was more than rqd
