@shawnlanefatty9393 hes a little like shawn lane, meaning shawn is gone unfortunately but if i wanted to go see a guitarist that was slightly comparable (cause no-one really is) it would be guthrie............
an interview/lesson of mattias eklundh from Freak Kitchen dude that would be amazing he is unique in sound and phrasing a genius almost nobody knows :(
sometimes i just forget how good Guthrie actually is. i think, i'm okay, until shit like this comes across. i mean i am okay, but this guy just fucking better than..
@ShredFever92I´m so tired of hearing about shawn lane. You´re right man. Guthrie and Ron´s playing are appealing, not only to guitar freaks, but also to people who appreciate good music. Comparing Guthrie to Shawn is not fair. Guthrie is on a class of his own, just like Bumblefoot, who also sings and makes extremely good music (200 times better than crappy gn´r)
@tweenboxyeah Shawn was thee guitarist, and Guthrie, along with basicaly every other rock/fusion/jazz guitarist will tell you the same thing. Shawn did'nt need to slap or play bluegrass. He played some of the most complex fusion stuff out there, yet also toned it down and composed beautiful pieces like Epilogue for Lisa. He also went further than any other western guitarist in Indian music( even further than mclaughlin). I absolutley love Guthrie, and believe he is prob inthe top three talented
@crazyboyxx ehhh shawn's tapping wasn't up to par with that of Guthrie Govan's or Ron Thal's. ron and guthrie play slap guitar, blue grass, hybrid pickin blues stuff. shawn never showed that he could play that stuff.
@crazyboyxx Scotty Anderson can match that, one of the best guitarists ever to have walk the earth, luckily he is still alive today, check him out i thought noone was greater than Govan... then i saw Scotty
he very amazing player.i can say anything if he was play guitar because all notes he play make amazing sound.and only jealous or crazy people who say he sucks or anything oke .
If you go back to the jazz era you will find the foundation for the majority of improvisational music in American culture. However, horn players have traditionally ruled the day were jazz was concerned. Because of the nature of wind instruments the horn players could play with power, volume and sustain! Instruments like guitars could not compete with horns. So guitarists played nice little quiet solos! Distortion allows the guitarist to finally compete!
people use distortion to get a heavy tone, they don't use it to sound noisy. don't confuse tone and playing - guthrie plays extremely cleanly, and seeing as you don't know what this means it means you can hear all the notes and it doesn't sound like a mess, meaning his technique is incredibly precise. distortion adds saturation, sustain and whatever else. do you think metal bands who play solos should actually play using the clean channel? clean playing means he's a competent soloist.
what i think is the most amazing thing about all these vids is the fact that people are walking PAST in the background! if they genuinely dont have a clue what are they doing at a music show??
Still not up dude. Be handy if you post the exact url in the info section of the video too. In case the interview isnt in the interviews section yet. Although dunno why it wouldnt!
Definitely up! You can access it through the front page by clicking on the picture of Guthrie in the slideshow or by visiting the interviews section of the site.

As legendary and incredible as Shawn Lane is/was, Guthrie's phrasing and tone just takes me on a whole new journey.
Every time I hear Guthrie, my mind is blown, all over again.

How does he make that tone last so long?????????
acodaniel1 2 years ago 2
@acodaniel1, it's called a sustainer. Either it's a special pickup on the guitar or a pedal. Although it could just be natural feedback with the amp.
junkyjuice21 2 years ago
It's not a sustainer pickup. He most certainly is using a compressor though.
Unless Cornfords have a compressor circuit built in.

That part when he uses the feedback along with the hammered notes sounds very Mattias Eklundhish! Very cool!

Guthrie showing Steve Vai fans that you don't need a fernandes sustainer.
TheBanyanEmperor 2 years ago 8
to be fair though that is feedback not sustain
slayermik 2 years ago
Sure, but when you use the sustainer on a dirty tone it always feeds back just like that.
