@eddieman2004 I'd have to agree with you. Almost all universities have a few players like this. Even some high schools have these kinds of players. He definitely seems like a nice guy, but there are better musicians out there that don't get enough credit either.
also note that he plays the sax out of the side of his mouth (a mal-technique that Kenny G uses), which isn't proper sax technique. The mouthpiece should be centered to the mouth. That said, Lester Young used to play with his saxophone tilted sideways (just watch his youtube videos), but then again, Lester Young was ridiculously good.
I'm not being abusive. I'm just saying what I see. If he's been playing for 40 years and that's the best he's got, then somethings gone very wrong. I've been playing for 2 years and I could outperform that in a minute.

No offense, but you wouldn't know talent if it came and slapped you in the face, if you think he's good. Seriously do a youtube search for "soprano sax" and you'll find hundreds of amateurs if not more, that are way better than him.
Please tell me how he's different to any Kenny G wannabe who've posted videos on youtube. I hate sob stories getting through on a talent competition. Talent should be about talent. Playing set notes on a soprano sax isn't talent. Jazz musicians improvising, now that's talent.
Oh dear me abzs2k, you've summed up my opinion to a T.
One thing that I've come to dislike about EVERYTHING now on BGT is that it's all just imitation. As you said thien - I want to see improvisation, and GOOD improvisation at that.
So really - either an absolutely perfect rendition of an extremely difficult technical piece, or you improvise. Simple as that, IMO
look in the mirror ,you will see a BIGGER TWAT. He has more talent than you will ever dream of haveing and if you dream that then you better wake up and apologize to a man that realy has got some
u idiot! dont watch him if u dont like him. ur just jealous cuz u dont have any talent.hes a very nice man with talent.what do u have? ur just good on criticising.
A lot of people (non-reed players) don't seem to understand how hard it is to play the way he does. Not just to get that gorgeous tone he has, but the vibrato! It would have taken many years of practice and a great amount of talent to achieve the sound that he did.
Julian Smith - alias Joolz Gianni is already a recording artist. His tracks appear on the Classic Chillout album compilation series. He was offered a five album record deal after forming his own band in 1993. He has played alongside Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet) and Gwen Dickey (Rose Royce). Acker Bilk, Diana Carroll and Ola Anabule have all featured with Jools. ITV say the competition has always been open to professionals! He has featured on three records for Simon Cowell.
Congratulations on 3rd place Julian. I voted for him & Shaheen & thought they both were the best. It was an amazingly good contest & coming 3rd is a great achievement tonight. Love Julian's beautiful music & the wonderful passion he puts into every note. Hope all his dreams finally come true. Good luck Julian. x
What a beautiful performance. I just wish him all the very best in life. May God guides him all the way. Once again though you are not the winner we know for sure that you would reach your dreams. May we find your album very soon. All the best!!!!!
Julian actually rocks, tbh. There are sooooo many people saying that what he does is barely a talent, and they're right. Playing what he does on the sax isn't that hard. BUT playing it with as much emotion and passion as he does, is. Proper amazment. Love you Julian :)
And that, RIGHT there, is why I HATE all of the instrumental auditions on BGT.
The music the performers play is VERY easy, not difficult AT ALL to master - it's not talent at all. I played in a chamber orchestra for five years, at a non-professional level, and there would be an easy 5-6 people in the orchestra who would blow ANY of the instrumental players out of the water - and these players are 16/17, btw.
You say playing with emotion is hard? Seriously, give it a year and you're fine.
I've met very few 16 to 17 year olds in both High school and college levels that have the tonal and pitch control as this guy. Not to mention the amount of emotion someone puts into a solo. You can be the best "technical" performer in the world and still sound bland if you don't add emotion.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The term 'emotion' is one of the soppiest, useless, and -fake- terms that exist in music. Why? It's a relative term - emotion is interpreteted differently from person to person, but most importantly, it really means NOTHING for music. It's like trying to saying that someone "plays with 110%" instead of "100%" - it's completely and utterly stupid, makes no sense, and you're trying to put a positive quality where none exists.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
In fact - here's a better analogy. It's like trying to say that a magical necklace "allows you to jump" - in other words, it provides no real benefit.
Better terms to describe this quality would be "muscial experience" or "feeling" - and you know what? Both of those qualities, whilst very reliant on natural talent, can be induced/created/enhanced by continued playing and greater experience.
Thus, 16/17 year olds could certainly display the same degree of 'emotion', as you call it, in...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
...in their playing as this guy does - and I've seen it.
I'll repeat again - a large amoutn fot eh players in my old SCHOOL orchestra could play with as much 'emotion' as this guy does - but they would be FAR more techincally proficient.
In terms of good tonal quality and pitch control - it's not hard to sustain/display either of these when you're only playing a couple of notes like this guy does. Sure, he can control his pitch and has good tonal quality - but these are BASIC...
...characteristics, and things that musicians learn quite early on.
And anyway - i've SEEN 16/17 year olds who had similar or better tonal quality and pitch control, AND who could also play with as much 'emotion'.
What it boils down to is that YOU clearly don't have a lot of muscial experience if you think this guy is very good, or anymore talented than a decent high school musician.
Regardless - an orchestra will ALWAYS employ the more technically proficient player over the 'emotive' one.
Got to hand it to you Yazzarh, what you are saying is true but people don't want to accept it. I don't play saxophone but this seems very basic and uninteresting to me.
haha, just came back to my posts and noticed how many of them had been rated down (and hence) had their ratings purged.
Whilst i acknowledge that I perhaps didn't say what i meant in a particularly nice way - what i sais was reality, and it's great to see that there are at least some people out there (such as yourself) can see that.
Thanks for the support though - and, without meaning to belittle the player of this music - I agree that it's nothing too special.
Yeah, I don't want to be harsh but he seems to be souless, unenergetic and just plain bland with what he plays. People go on about his emotion, but playing an instrument is mostly technique etc. and the listener adds their own feelings to it, and this guy was playing head-scratchingly basic stuff.... How hard is it to put emotion into one or two notes held for ages anyway, a good musician could communicate emotion through something complicated.
Exactly my opinion - I don't really think I could've said it better myself. Emotion is what everyone has from birth, before they even START playing instruments - and thus, 'lots of emotion' in playing shouldn't be a measure of how good a plyer someone is.
Technique and proper handling of an instrument, however, is LEARNED, and most certainly can - and should - be used as an indicator of playing ability.
As you yourself said - there's really not that much to holding a note for a long time.
Playing a technically demanding piece, however, whilst playing it accurately, in the style needed, with personal inflections AND whilst demonstrating flair and profiency for the instrument inside the constraints of the composer - is MUCH more difficult, and should be MUCH more highly celebrated.
SilentBombr im not tryin to get u mad. but it sounds easy but theres alot ofstuff that you would notice of the top listning to it. lk dynamics and stuff
Yazzarh I totally agree. There are so many more talented saxophonists out there struggling to make it! He has a nice tone, but it's totally underwhelming.
Glad to see that some people here actually have some sense of muscial understanding and know-how of exactly what instrumental playing.
Seriously, I'm starting to think that all I'll need to get through is just a mopey tune and a light brush-up on my old violin skills...
But yes - I agree. His performances are underwhelming, and reality is, if even HALF of the people who sat agape during his performance watched some REAL skill, they would retract their votes instantly - guarantee it.
''Somewhere'' originally from West Side Story I think, not sure.
