In the cities the liquor was something that was cherished and traded. The cities decided that the poor country folk and recently freed slaves who were making free/cheap corn whiskey should be supressed with military force. The woods folk were warriors and pioneers, so it didn't go well for the government.

At the same time the military is a very respected way for the poor to get out of poverty, improve the lives of their family; however the poor are often the target of choice to fill these armies. He is basically referring to all these things simultaneously, in my mind.

Tim Fite is unbelievably brilliant. His social commentary is unmatched and this video (and the oodles of ignorant comments about it) are proof that his music and message affects people. It's a damn shame that more people can't understand the seriously deep-seated messages in this song. It must be because they were educated in the system that is "supported" by NoChildLeftBehind. Bravo Tim Fite for showing the world your amazing grasp on American culture.

@nooloo3000 I got this one... The person is basically from the south, where we believed for a long time that the government is bad, and specifically out to get you. This mentality comes from two MAJOR incursions with the southern US.

The north and south disputed territory, laws, and trade during the Civil War. After the south lost, there was a sense of loss, and the poor whites were put into a position of poverty, as slaves were freed, and the pay for employees was dropped dramatically.

what happened, and I remember when this first got released, that many people unfortunately did not 'get it' they thought he was mocking the soldiers themselves so when one person says jump off the bridge everyone else does and thus people started rating it low and complaining without really understanding this brilliant music video.
